Once at my old school, we received a bomb threat and had to evacuate everyone.
IT WAS AWESOME!
Unfortunately the school didn't go boom...

Our school had a stabbing once. The knife came from the school's kitchen.

I used to live in a town which was practically a giant military garrison. During Primary school (grade school for you American chums) we'd frequently have "bomb drills" in the same vien as fire drills. Except with fire drills you all went out onto the field, but with bomb drills you'd have to walk twenty minutes down the road accompanied by a police officer.

T'was booooring, but this was only in the late 90s. I can only imagine it'd only be ten times worse for those nowadays...

As for school shootings, I'm glad I live in the UK where things like that don't happen. The most recent one I know of was back in the 90s, which resulted in the outlawing of handguns. So yeah...

Which UT? Austin?

And yeah, I went to public school in a town with three "gangs". We spent two weeks on lockdown right before Christmas break one year because of three consecutive shootings in our district.

Damn, that sucks.

On a related note, we've got some program involving the Columbine shootings tomorrow.
Interesting.

Texas + Gun Nuts = My Surprise-o-meter: 0%

Yeah, the US needs to fix their "everyone gets a gun" policy, they're behind Brazil in gun-related homicides in the global charts, that just means 2nd place.
So regular homicides don't count because they didn't occur with a gun? Think about it. Of course if there are less guns around you are going to find less murders with firearms.

Just like if there where no knifes, but everyone had a spear you would find lots of murders with spears.

The US has a homicide rate of 5.4, which oddly enough is low compared to the rest of the world. Fairly modest compared to the developed world, and happens to be the exact same rate as the median of Europe.

The US violent crime rates are also shockingly low when compared to anywhere in Europe, only Australia, and some very small countries have the US beat on those rates.

France, Germany, and the UK are the ones skewing the homicide rate for Europe anyway (the median rate would be more then a bit higher without adding in these countries), and all had traditionally low homicide rates before the banning of fire arms in those countries, in fact all three had lower homicide rates around 1900 then they do now, and in 1900, the US had a lower homicide rate then all but the UK (1.0 to 1.2) when you could buy guns out of a catalog and have them mailed to you.

Gun have no real bearing on the overall homicide rate, just subrates like the one you brought up.

I blame it on lack of imagination in today's youth. Shooting yourself with an ak-47? Yawn!

If I were to commit suicide, I would jump out of an aeroplane, freefall for a while, possibly using a jetpack to give me that extra boost, and then punch either Gabe Newell, Bobby Kotick, or Justin Beiber in the face at terminal velocity, preferably all 3.
Why Gabe Newell?

OT: I have never experienced a school shooting and I doubt I ever will. I don't think there have been any school shootings here in Norway at all.

If this is blamed on video games and not the availability of firearms (amongst other things) I will be both unsurprised and hugely pissed off.

Anyway, that must have been shit a day.
Someone killed themselves (and harmed nobody else in the process) and that is the fault of guns existing? That makes less sense then the people that blame violent behavior on violent media. At least there there is some kind of connection (monkey see monkey do idea).
He took a fucking AK-47 into school and shot himself with it. So OK, no one was shot this time, but have you seen the number of school shootings that have taken place in America? It's ludicrous.
Blame the culture not the guns.
I think the guns help with the whole "shooting" bit.
What is the point of owning assault rifles anyways?

Wow. Can't really say I've experienced anything like that. Worst thing that happened in my school was two silly kids who decided to throw mud on the teachers' cars. The teachers were sooo pissed!
[sub][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub]Yes, one of those kids was me[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub]

The only thing to blame this on is the kid that did the shooting, if he didn't have a gun he would have used pills, or a knife to kill himself.

This "it's the availability of guns that makes people into killers" crap is just that: crap. People have been killing each other ever since we learned that rocks can be used to crush skulls.

I posted the answer in this thread before. You can look for it if you care.

Counting down to this getting blamed on videogames.
Frankly I'm more amazed he had an assault rifle in his possession.

thats not the point the availabilty of guns is what increase the death count rocks can't kill dozens of people in a second from 200+ yards

We had bomb threats all the time at my high school and they never amounted to anything. I really think that a disaster was avoided in this shooting though. You don't bring an AK when you only want to hurt yourself.

From Belfast, kind of desensitised to hearing about shootings and awful things like that.

The public will blame everything and everyone but themselves, C'est la vie at the moment. Society is the breeder of its own nightmares

My regrets to his familly.

I hope something positive can come out of the event like more people coming foward to councilling. Any reason why he did it?
Understandable about the desensitization, granted a bit sad.

I think im fortunate that something like that never happened to me...

So he got hold of a ak-47 and then shot himself with it.Wouldnt it been easier just to get hold of a handgun as you dont normally just pick up a ak-47 on the streets.

Well other than abit random at least the guy didnt try to take out half the school with him
I think thats always a decent thing to do, instead of shooting and killing several students along with yourself, just kill yourself...

Dont want to sound heartless, but I dont give a shit about people who shoot-up their schools, maybe before they decide to do that, but afterwards, they can rot in hell for all I care...
