My high school was blocks away from the downtown core, and on September 10, 2001 someone fired a gun downtown, so they locked down the school, primarily because they didn't catch the guy. It was apparently a big deal. Not surprising since I live in Canada, and we generally don't have guns.

It didn't freak me out or anything, I just thought it was nuts. It wasn't until the next day that I freaked out.

Wow..interesting
I remember when I was in 8th grade, they said something about a kid fresh out of jail who wanted to come to our school and like, I think cause a shooting or some bullshit. I don't know I never heard the principal announce it I was in the bathroom. My friend told me about it and I was like...wait what the fuck? But yeah it was an empty threat. That's the closet I've experienced to something similar

Thats messed up. Feeling for the family. Stuff like that doesnt really happen here in Australia, although a while back a 13 year old stabbed another kid to death. Happened in Melbourne I think (Crime central)

As for personal experiences, I try to keep myself and those around me out of trouble, so stuff like this rarely happens to me.

..come on.
He's going to kill himself.
He must've wanted to go out with a bang.
No pun intended.

I cow once got away from a local farm and got behind my school. They put us on lock down till the police came and shot it. I survived the trauma.

I gotta give this guy props. To blow himself away with an AK47 is pretty fucking awesome.

On topic, glad no one else was hurt. It always makes me mad when a crazy ************ shoots random people, then offs himself. At least this bloke was decent enough to not hurt anyone else.

Watch a copy of MW2 get found in his xbox when the investigator search his home just so the anti-gaming people will be able to ***** about more stuff...

Closest thing like that that happened at my school was a dud, WWII-era pineapple and some spare ammo-casings. But that just sounds, odd, that he was able to do that...
Shame something couldn't have been done about it.

Such a strange incident, glad no one was hurt but the gunman. Sad he took his own life though.

I'm actually somewhat surprised that I have seen a number of people on these boards who attend UT. It honest never occurred to me that there might be several of us that attend so I never bothered asking around.

why an ak-47 of all things? surely it'd be hard to get it at the right angle, and how exactly did he smuggle it in there in the first place?
One need not "smuggle". The place in question is at the edge of the campus. Hell, he could have parked a car less than a block away.

No, I have not. And you did not survive a school shooting, seeing as this was in fact a suicide, but not an attack on other students. How the hell does one come in ownership of an AK47 anyway?! Seriously, would it have been easier to just use a pistol?

The worst things that have happened at my school: some kid watching south park and then shitting in a urinal, and another kid pulling the fire alarm when there was no fire 3 times in a row.

If the gunman did not, as of this morning, have ready access to a handgun, then the answer is, quite obviously, no.

And, as I have pointed out, it is both harder to acquire a handgun (the age limit is higher) and, often, more expensive. My one firearm is a Springfield XD sub-compact and it cost around 700 USD. I can, at this moment if I want to, purchase a semi-automatic version of the AK-40 for less than 500 USD. Granted, such a bargain bin model is almost certainly manufactured somewhere other than Russia and is not, technically, an AK-47, few people would be able to identify this fact even after a close inspection of the weapon.

The truth is that it is simply easier to purchase a long weapon (a shotgun, rifle etc) than it is to purchase a handgun. It is relatively difficult to carry about a shotgun without someone noticing while there are any number of handguns designed with concealment in mind.

People kill themselves every day.
The only thing that makes this any different is proximity.
One of my former neighbours killed herself.
Didn't know her, so I didn't give a shit.
Don't see why you would.
