I am surprised and horrified at the large amount of dickish comments made against the American right to own firearms and remarks and jokes made towards this incident. I understand peoples opinions but I do not condone such remarks on this website...

I'm kind of ashamed to have an account here now....

The worst I had was in middle school near the end of the day, I was in my 4th class of the day, in Drama, my favorite class of that week day since the rest sucked. We got word over the intercom from the principle that we would be staying in our current class for the rest of the day. Someone had stabbed a 6th grader, a new kid to the school in general, in the side with a box cutter. That poor kid.. I never heard of a thing from him after that day, they had police tape around the spot it happened and the halls were so empty and quiet, it was quite overwhelming. But, the office staff informed us the kid was fine and off to the hospital, I don't even know if his parents sued the school. I would have if that happened to my kid!

Oh dude, I heard about that.

I have friends who go there, and they were really shaken up. My parents are the paranoid type, so they'll probably be too scared to let me go to UT now. :(

Holy hell that's scary.
Once in elementary school, there was supposedly a man who was circling around the school with a rifle, shooting every now and then. We were locked down for almost the entire school day, since he apparently ran off a couple minutes after it was called, and they wanted to be safe.
It ended up being more a party than anything though by the end, since the guy obviously wasn't coming back.

People killing them self in public is a form of "watch this" because doing it in your home by yourself makes it feel as if no one will know, truth is no one will till about 2-3 weeks later or till the family comes home or ect. also its your last look at thoes who are going to keep living, well that's how I would see it, meh just my opinion.

Ive been shot at in a drive by with only a knife in my pocket for defense, Do I blame videogames for this? hell no I blame how easy it is to get guns and get mistaken for another person, people and violence are hand in hand, but I'm not freaking out about how I almost died, I'm still here so my walk with death continues.

Shit dude, I just read that story on cnn.com! That's amazing to hear you experienced it.

If I were you, I would be going out to drink and get laid all night! With a story like that, you could go to any bar and be like - "Hey baby, I almost got killed today by a guy with an AK47, wanna make out?"

But seriously, one of the more healthy ways to come back from a traumatic event like that would be to try getting back into a focused routine of your daily activities. Keep your mind busy as the trauma slowly gets better.

Damn. Worst thing that ever happened at my school was a three-alarm fire. I can't say that's ever happened around me, but I do deal with plenty of death; decapitations, mutilations, disembowelment-- you get the idea.
Out of morbid curiosity what exactly do you do that exposes you to such things?
My day-to-day life. To be fare, said deaths are rarely human, but if you think it's any less gruesome to walk out your back door and find a full-grown dog that's been skinned, decapitated, and left to rot (we get some weird predators around here), you'd be sorely mistaken. I recall this one particularly memorable time where I was taking a stroll and found myself staring into the face of a decapitated chicken-- the rest of her was lying completely untouched some two meters away.

Thankfully, the electric fence is keeping El Chupacabra at bay.

I live in a rough neighbourhood of a large town/small city in Canada. There aren't shooting but there are tons of assaults with baseball bats among other things. I haven't been a part of any of these as of yet (knock on wood) but the future is unknown.

So, no, I have not experienced anything like that. The absolute *worst* thing I suffered through inside of a school was nearly getting trampled / trampling someone when a power outage hit my high school a half-decade ago.

EDIT: Alright, your post is confusing. So he shot up the school but didn't kill anyone and then he killed himself, or he just killed himself in public or what? Seriously, help me out here.

And yes, I did experience something like this (sort of). This past summer one of the guests staying at the university I work at hung himself in his room. It was a bit surprising and the building he did it in was a bit of a zoo for a while, but we survived. Maybe not quite as intense or scary, but school suicides are relatively common.

I go to the University of Texas, where a student shot himself with an AK47 this morning. Not really that hard to survive, but there was obviously a huge commotion, I was in lock down in a lecture hall for three hours, and it was overall one of the weirdest days of my life, and I'm still a little frazzled. All I can think to do is my laundry. So I want to know, Escapist, have you ever experienced anything like this? What do you think possesses people to shoot places up or shoot themselves in public? Are you worried that this will get blamed on video games? There's just so much to talk about when this stuff happens I don't even know a good question to ask.

Edit: Extra clarification: No one knows why he did it or how he got a frickin AK47. I don't know how he even angled it to shoot himself anyway. Also, apparently he was running around smiling at people and yelling "woohoo!" So yeah...

Edit 2: Most important and probably should've been clearer in the initial post, he shot no one but himself.
It sounds like you walked to the nearest game stop but the whole damn store was closed instead of being part of a school shootout.
