So I played Gears of War for the first time in my life.

Aaand it's really freaking good !

I mean it has amazingly well done shooting mechanics, the guns are fairly varied, the encounters are really well designed, the emergence hole mechanic is a stroke of genius in my honest opinion, not to mention the amazingly well crafted pacing, wow I can't believe this is actually really good and deserves the hype.

So guys, if I liked this game, will I like the sequels ?

Eh...the mechanics are solid, but I always found the story really lacking, particularly in 2 and 3. You get the feeling they're always about to reveal something big about the Locust, but they never really do. I mean, if you liked 1, 2 and 3 are definitely worth playing, as the gameplay is pretty similar and works just as well. It's just the story and characters are kinda lame.

I played the first two but it wasn't really enough to keep me hooked. I had fun with them sure but I didn't really like how the plot was presented. At this point I'm sure all of the answers are present between the 3 core games and Judgement but going only on the first two games it leaves a bit to be desired in the narrative department. Gameplay wise though, it's good for some fun but not the kind of game I would go back to frequently.

Glad you like it though. The last thing you need is me raining on your parade.

Gears isnt about story its about action surely? The game is one massive dudebro fest.

True enough: What always bothered me though is that they don't appear to be on Earth and if that's the case, why not just go back TO Earth where there are no locusts? Then I cut something in half with my lancer and forget about that for another few minutes.

I really did love the first two, especially if you play it with friends on multiplayer. There is something about only having one life that makes combat that much more personal and a kill that much more satisfying...

I may have to go play Gears 2.

Well, they're basically just more of the same with slightly tighter mechanics and more varied environments (there are a lot more colors in Gears 2 than the first game).

And if you're playing for single-player, the plot context is a little better in 2 as well. In the first game, a little past the halfway point they completely forget that they're supposed to actually give context for where you're going, how you got there, and what your objective is, and I honestly can't remember how I transitioned from the last major area of the game to the final boss encounter, because it felt like I just accidentally skipped a cutscene or two that weren't actually there in the first place.

I haven't played the third one yet myself, but unless they completely changed the mechanics (by all accounts they didn't), it's probably still just as good as the first two. And I don't know anything about Judgement, so I can't comment on it.

If you loved the first one then it only gets better for you down the line.

Personally I am used to shooters with 10x the speed, 30x the variety, and 40 million times the color so playing Gears just feels like someone brought me to a retirement home.
I did like the reload thing though.

You're right about them not being on Earth. But they didn't travel to Sera, that's where they're from. It's actually more like an alternate Earth than another planet. The most advanced they got in their space program as far as we can tell from the games was launching satellites of firey death. Ah, the lancer is pretty awesome, but I love me some Hammer of Dawn.

I really like the Gears of War games, they're pretty solid and lots of fun. If you liked the first, I'd definitely recommend picking up the second.

Hey, i loved the first GOW. The one great game where Epic didn`t try to invent an epic story line. The presentation will get better and really hillarious when you start the second (the epic funny Maria scene). The gameplay remains solid and fun, grab them (sorry can´t comment on the third since my box died a long time ago).

I remember really liking the first one at the time, but honestly, all the sequels are exactly like the first one with very little added to spice things up. Personally I was bored as hell with the franchise by the time the third one came out. If you played through the first one you've pretty much seen all you need to see gameplay wise, unless for some bizarre reason the plot interests you.

I'd recommend bulletstorm or vanquish over gears 2 and 3 if you'll accept something more tangential as opposed to a sequel.

Can't being to detail the amounts of fun I have with 3 mates playing Horde online.
That's the truth. Horde, especially in GOW3 when you get bosses at certain levels, is sick fun.

Changed yer life didn't it?

Gears 1 actually has a lot of atmosphere and some half decent pacing, the fact you only really see a load of friendlies at the start, and some of yo squad die. Makes it seem like you are actually on the losing side of a desperate war. The shooting is a bit unpolished and the AI are usless. But its a great game.

Gears 2 dumps any atmosphere for more guns and tanks. Its still great the campaign is longer and there are more weapons, the game feels less squad based and more like you are part of a larger military. The mechanics are at their best here and stay good in the third.

Gears 3 A very average game with nothing you've not seen elsewhere a hundred times. They fucked up the look in my opinon, because the lack of sleeves bothers me for some reason. And none of the characters look right any more Marcus used to have a rough and pitted face but now it is gorgeous and smooth. Baird, Cole 'n' Dom don't look any where near right either, and its not due to the hair style changes. The faces are just wrong.

Gears Judgment Day.... It's shit. Don't bother with this crap until you can buy it for a very small amount of money. Its way too short, the new characters are dumb, the areas are uninspired and the final boss made me want to drop the controller and walk out. Its a short shitty money grabbing prequel filled with time trials, and they over do the waves of enemies in a locked area thing. But what pissed me off the most was you can only have two guns now. For example you can only carry a Lancer and a boltock, rather than a Lancer, boltock and a sniper rifle.

Prequels are usually crap, but hey the others are great so go play em.

I thought the story was fine for the game. I didnt really focus on it that much, just saw it as a bit of fluff, enough to tell me why I want to use the chainsaw bayonet of my Lancer on that ugly fucker over there...

All I needed from the franchise.

2 is, in my opinion, the best one and also one of the best examples of the genre. I was fantastically disappointed in 3, it was er just wrong in so many ways that I can't understand how they screwed it up so badly.

If you pay attention to the story in Gears 3 it has an environmental message, and it turns out you're the bad guy.
I still can't figure out if it's meant to be a parody or not.
