9.Gungrave. Possibly one of the most underrated shows I've seen. Gungrave is a truly great story about friendship, love and betrayal without ever falling into cheesiness the great animation, spectacular fight scenes and well thought out character development doesn't hurt either.
You sir, are awesome. I completely fell in love with Gungrave.

Nothing too serious eh? Hmmm...

Outlaw Star and Trigun. Try those, you'll hear about them a lot but that's for good reason, and since you're starting off those are good starters.

If you want something darker go for Baccano!
Fucking Baccano is not dark. Berserk is dark(ish). Shigurui is dark. Baccano! is woo-hoo sploonk blood wackiness.
I meant dark in terms of gore, I know overall it's pretty cheery and comedic. This guy is talking about the Toonami days of anime, so I'm assuming a good amount of blood might not be to his liking. Like

Rail Tracer (I'll call him that for the sake of ignorance) getting his arm torn off and you can see his insides

I mean Jesus I'm not saying it's comparable to Higurashi, Gantz, Berserk or Devil Man (oh yes, if you haven't seen that, it's split across 2 movies and it's brutal...unlike the series, that was tame) but gore is gore.

NUU! Getbacker's ending ruins the entire story! It really does! It was such a good series, then it had to end like that. It was worse than the Soul Eater anime ending...

My suggestions are:
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell(either the first movie or the show is good)
Trigun
Outlaw Star
Pretty much any Gundam series except Seed
Robotech/Macross

It didn't ruin it for me, but I wanted to kill Ban after defeating Dr. Jackal.

It blatantly showed that there was far more unresolved story arcs to go, but they literally stopped it for no reason.

a new Fullmetal Alchemist is available for free on hulu.com (in the US, anyway.) And it's great.

You should search for this in the forums, though. This isn't the first time this has been asked. It probably isn't the hundredth time, either.

10.Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. Despite having no real plot, since I consider Kai and Rei to be non canon, Higurashi is one of the most atmospheric and frightening shows I've ever seen. It constantly keeps you guessing and always gives a feeling of paranoia and dread...
with the possible exception of FLCL...
What's wrong with Kai? It's an essential part of the story.

On topic, I'd say Coyboy Bebop, Slayers, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya as good starting anime.

Alright, to answer your questions:
1. I'm 14, and will probably watching it on my computer in the family room, so I guess nothing way too mature (though I can handle mature-er plots, concepts, etc.)
2. I like watching sci-fi action and have recently developed an interest in Twin Peaks.
3. Quality isn't an issue. I used to watch edd ed'n eddy (back around when I watched Toonami)
4. I would like to try some mecha and maybe some of the more comedy-focused stuff
Also, if you can tell me what's available on Netflix instant, that'd be great. I really love the service, and my PC's dvd player might have some issues.

I agree with Full Metal Alchemist for a starter anime but I recommend you watch Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood it is basically the same premise and plotlint to an extent as the original but has way more content and is a million times better.

Also as I always say: TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN.

Just watch it, don't think about it just do it. It will blow your mind.

Black Lagoon is on Netflix. it's rather mature with the guns, guts, and language but its not on instant.

Based on what you said, I would say that Eureka 7 would be your best bet.
-Kind of light hearted. (Gets serious when it needs to.)
-Great mecha action.(Mechs on flying surfboards, what is there to hate in that?)
-Great story/characters.
-Not very off-setting.

Judging by your responses I'd go for Trigun (comedic Sci-Fi)or Akira (more serious and one of the originals of the genre).

For mechs I'd say Evangalion, although there is a bit more to them than just that. Again an orignal classic. Or maybe something along the lines of Gundam.

If you like Trigun I'd also go Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop and Dragonball Z Kai (the new cut down version), they're all pretty similar. Vampire Hunter D is also a classic if Vamps are your thing.

If you've then decided to move onto heavier/more gory/ adult fare, Wicked City, Ninja Scroll for the classics and Beserk. These last 3 are pretty graphic though.

I'm not sure about online availiablity. All these are worth purchasing retail anyways.
