Hold on I am getting a bit ahead of myself let me set the stage first. There are two African Americans (Including me) and two Caucasians. They are watching me play [Prototype] as they wanted to see what it was like. I was far enough in [Prototype] where I could steal identities and what not. We were making jokes about the ridiculousness of the stealth consuming where even if the game said no one could see you obviously someone had to see two people somehow melt into one. I took possession of one of the many African Americans sporting a Hoody and baggy jeans and began dashing up a wall while a military offical was looking at me and did nothing.

I commented on this and said, "Ya see this is ridiculous apparently everyone can sprint up walls since this cop sounds no alarms. I mean come one."

THEN my white friend in a laughing tone says, "Well your character is black maybe the white general just figure they came out with a new pair of Nikes or something, nothing different."

Instantly three of us laugh at the corny joke finding it funny in its own way. However guess which one wasn't laughing. The other black friend. He instantly assumed it was a shoot at our race which i didn't quite understand. It was really just a corny joke. It took like 15 minutes for the guy to calm down.

So I ask; Was there anything wrong with that joke or was the guy just overreacting like we all assumed he was? Also have you ever been playing a game with mixed friends and the unfortunate idea of racism reared its ugly head?

Definate over-reaction. Racism only really counts when it's meant with malicious intent. If it's a pointless little joke comment then just let it go.

1) I loved that joke, it totally made my day.
2) Yeah, your friend is over-reacting. Perhaps if the joke had been "The cop is afraid that if he chases he's gonna end up in Harlem and get shot at", his anger would have been less groundless.

Some people look for racism in every comment they can.
Same with some woman who look for sexist comments

My three best friends are Native American, Caribbean (black) and mixed hispanic/white guy. I myself am Norwegian/Swedish/Scottish decent so I am roughly as white as fresh snow. We basically make racial jokes at each other pretty constantly.

Part of it is were all between the ages of 28-32 so our generation is a little more insensitive than yours. Another part is whereas your friend made the joke about the race as a whole we direct the jokes at each other. It makes it less of a stereotype and more about each other just ripping on each other as guys often do.

I have a homosexual friend and at a recent BBQ he had no issue with any gay jokes made, he even made them himself.

Some people take things way too seriously.

Fixed for you. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine when people say African American, even though there are such things as white Africans, scary I know. However, that's a topic for another day. Back OT, there was nothing wrong with the joke because it was just that, a joke and shouldn't be taken so serious. As for me, racism has never come up between me and my friends because we don't take things seriously, and we realize they're just jokes.

I was playing Guitar Hero 3 and a friend of mine mentioned how there were no black dudes in it. People always will try and find racism, always. Look how many rappers go on about slavery...STILL
Also your friend needs to stop being such a whiny *****, I don't care if he's White, Black or Asian.
You so should have come back with, "why so serious" :p

Yeah, I've got a couple of people like that in my class. Personally, they piss me off to no end. I didn't go batshit when I got called "Swiss cheese" in an american school (even though it wasn't funny). I just rolled my eyes.
But some guys in my school would freak out if you made racial jokes. One threatened to go to the teacher with it, and everyone knows how school personnel likes to freak out. Annoying bastards who can't take a joke.
