Aye, I know. There are a lot of good sci-fi shows being cancelled as of late, sci fy really don't have a very good strategy about them, they'll probably just turn into the next MTV or something :L

Yeah, I'm part of project Alice too, I suspect if it'll get on anything it's more likely to be TnT, though being a Brit I wont be able to watch it. It just got really interesting as well, tough throughout the entire series I don't think tehy ever really propely explained why they don't just attack already *shrug*.

If you're interested, here's how Stargate Extinction would have played out. Sounds very average, to be honest.

Outlaw Star! Firefly is actually a complete copy of the anime. Here is the proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO8_wZdjzhE and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Staxringold/Firefly. Its on wikipedia. Inara Serra was supposed to be a catgirl.

Outlaw Star although expect a few WTF episodes and characters and alot of the BS that makes it difficulf for me to take anime seriously.

I personally recommend Cowboy Bebop. It less of the loony anime BS and an overarching story that really damn good.

This may seem off, but a SciFi series with interesting characters and a cool ship doing odd jobs across a shattered and crime-ridden galaxy would also describe Cowboy Bebop, so that if you haven't seen it.

Everything Joss Whedon writes is the same
There is truth in that, yes. But, there's money to be made from doing the same thing over and over, people get comfortable in what they know. I only saw bits of Firefly and the movie once or twice, and although watchable, I'd hardly call it great.

Firefly was described as the modern US version of Blake's 7, I'd recommend that. Also, Farscape is the modern US/Australian version of Blake's 7, also worth watching, though both kept going longer than they should have. Blake's 7 was done on a very limited budget, however, and it sometimes shows.

Doctor Who...while the new Doctor Who has very high production values, and consistently good acting (excepting Billie Piper), they've taken this as an excuse to avoid working too hard on the writing or character development. Very good if you like tired cliches, have no attention span and aren't concerned with anything even pretending to make sense. I was expecting it to get better once RTD had left, but it seems he was necessary after all...Jesus Tinkerbell Doctor was awful, but Moffat really outdid that with the Pandorica rubbish.

The old Doctor Who varied alot in feel and style, but was consistently very good (with a number of noteworthy exemptions) for 25 years, which is no mean feat.

I'd extend that to saying that Serenity was only worth watching when Summer Glau or that agent person were onscreen, and not even always then (but they had some very good bits).

I've only seen Serenity, but I'd second Cowboy Bebop and Doctor Who (Series 5&6). Also, because it's obvious, the original Star Wars trilogy, lol.

Guuuuys, you called all the good ones. Um, I really enjoyed Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles. Although, it got cancelled at the end of the second season on a friggin' enormous cliffhanger. That, and it's gloriously, spectacularly dark in quite a few moments. But it's pretty good over all.

Note to self, do not employ Summer Glau.

...

Hang on, they should put her in the next Transformers movie.

No, then it might be good, we'll all regret the premature death of the franchise, and no one will ever hire Ms. Glau again.

Ok, yes, that is a possibility, I guess, but I'm willing to risk a good Transformers movie.

People really think someone hasn't seen Cowboy Bebop..?
I never saw it until last year. Still haven't seen popular stuff like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Outlaw Star, and Trigun.

As in similar as in tone, or good but it got canned?

...I'm gonna presume you meant the former, so I'll recommend shows like Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, and possibly Babylon 5, Farscape and Stargate Atlantis, I really have to watch more of the latter three...

If you like anime, Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star are good places to look...

Go with Blakes 7, although it's a)very old and b)rather grating at points.
