I was wondering if it was possible over Steam to "pre-download" a game? So I can download all the necessary files/updates etc. before my retail copy arrives for redeeming, so I can save some time.

Also, is there anything I should know about the game before I start? Cheers.

Sorry, no way to preload a game that you're buying retail.

And yes, there is one thing you should know. One very important detail. Don't fall for the hats. Don't let them tempt you. At first there were just tens of them. Then hundreds. Then thousands. Then millions. They've taken over nearly everyone. Their hold is so..very strong. They corrupt everything they touch. Don't fall into their obvious trap.

As for me, I fear it is too late...

Just play the game, enjoy it, and don't be one of "those" people who only use the flamethrower while running forward the entire time.

I highly suggest this game. I've just bought The Orange Box and I've gotta say, it's a heck of a lot of fun. Also, don't pay for Storage keys, either trade them away for guaranteed usefulness or trade useless items for keys.

It just came in the mail and I'm downloading everything now... Well this topic seems rather pointless now, don't mind me.

Don't the hats cost money? I wouldn't pay for those...

No. They randomly drop and come out of crates that randomly drop. Those can be traded. The ones you buy are not tradable.

I just hope you don't end up like me. Disappointed and wishing I hadn't bought it. Then again, I got portal and HL2 as well. So I guess it wasn't all bad.

Welcome to the masses that play TF2, got a few tips for you:
1. Hats = Traps
2. The combat is somewhat close quarters, the closer you are to a target the more damage your shots tend to do.
3. The soldier that you're chasing around the corner only ran away to load up some critical rockets
4. Soldier/Demoman are good starting classes.

There's plenty more to be said but that's the very rough just of it, there's actually a pretty solid in-game tutorial now so just check that out before you jump into online play.

This. Also, try to stay away from trading servers. The people that frequent them are frightening to associate with. The only time I visit a trading server is if I need to get rid of a bunch of crates.

Just have fun playing the game as it was meant to be played and you'll be fine.

It's not a hard game at all, with a little bit of common sense you can easily be among the best of the rankings in a match.

TF2 knows how to raise my blood pressure ... yet i keep playing it :|

Soldier and pyro are good combat classes to play with. Some people get pretty serious when playing so dont get disheartened when some elite jackass moans via voice chat. Just laugh at his social skills :3

It's eleven-freaking-gig. How!? It reports to Windows that it's about 500 MB, so where did this ten gig of other shit come from?

Also, I bought it fairly recently and am not impressed after all the hype.

Do not listen to this man, OP. Hats are beautiful, comfortable, and make your head oh so glorious.

Don't be fooled by above posters.
Hats=Cash

The last first unusual I unboxed I sold for 40 bucks.
This, basically. I've not lucked out unboxing stuff because I can't seem to get any keys. I have however traded a vintage hat or two and the potato hat for 20-30 bucks worth of steam games. If people want to pay, let them. If I want to reap the rewards from it, let me. :D

This. TF2 is very easy to enjoy. But please for the love of all that's holy think about your actions and try to do what's beneficial for the whole team. Running forward with w + m1 isn't going to help. Running forward with w + m2 doesn't help. Camping behind a sentry behind the frontlines doesn't help. I'm usre you'll find more things but try to find something enjoyable that benefits your team.

That would only happen if you were playing against terrible players.
