I'm too young to drink, but if I was going into a bar, I would drink some of the following: some kind of juice, water, Ginger Ale. Maybe you can try a mix of seltzer and cranberry juice. My dad and I drink it and it's pretty good. Just try a bunch of stuff and see what you like. Keep it varied so you don't get "bored" of it.

Me, I drink shit-tons of Mountain Dew when my friends are drinking shit-tons of booze. (all relative values mind you). Caffeine gives a great buzz in massive quantities. XD But as you say, sometimes you're not feeling lots of soda, so mixed drinks sans liquor are always a good bet. And no, I tend not to get less enjoyment as people get more drunk. At that point I'm too busy laughing at them. Of course I have some friends who are also sober, so it's fine too when I've got them to talk to.

No one should absolutely need chemicals to enjoy themselves, make your own high. XD

My main advice is not to quit, but to practice moderation instead. Quitting seems a bit extreme in your case and you may be setting yourself up for failure.

Caffeinated beverages are probably the best replacement drinks, mainly because there is still a buzz involved.

Jfswift has it right as well, you may be able to get some perks from your friends for being a DD.

If you're not opposed to replacing one vice for another, smoking a little pot might not be the worst idea.

Either way, good luck. I know how hard it is to be the only sober one amongst friends.

My doctor wants me to not drink for 1 month before running some liver tests. I'm 3 weeks in and it's driving me insane. It's making me want to take up smoking again. I guess I just never realised how much it relaxes me. Sigh. 1 more week to go then I'm getting plowed.

Specifically, what would you drink in a pub or nightclub to replace alcoholic drinks? I'm a Pepsi Max fan but I drink two litres of the stuff a day and couldn't stomach much more of it.

Also, do you tend to find yourself getting less enjoyment as a night wears on and people start getting progressively drunker and you're stone cold sober?

Any thoughts are welcome.
I've never drank a drop in my entire life. When I was 5 I made a death-bed promise to my aunt when she was about to expire from alchohol poisoning - she was a really really bad alcoholic, drinking vodka like water, etc, and it absolutely destroyed her, so it wasn't a difficult promise to make. Or to keep.

I'm 29 now, and I have to say I've never felt like I'm missing out in terms of the alcohol thing. I'm a bit of a fogey now (settling down and all that), but when I was younger I could go to the pub (soft drinks), go dancing and generally have a great time without needing any of it. My friends would all get drunk and I would just generally be entertained by their drunken antics.

In terms of how to replace it - Pepsi's quite a heavy drink. You'd be better looking at lighter options. Fresh orange and lemonade's nice. Or even just fresh orange. If you prefer the taste of something like Pepsi, then have some still mineral water in between Pepsis. That'll help take a bit of pressure off your stomach in terms of dealing with it.

Instead of thinking what you'll miss about it, concentrate on the benefits, like the fact you'll always be in control of yourself, so less chances for embarassing incidents.

It'll be hard at times, especially if all your friends are drinking, but if they're decent friends, they'll respect you enough to try and make it less difficult for you. Not harp on along the lines of "Go on, have a drink!" etc.

Best of luck with it!

yust don't drink so much yust a little^^ and if you don't wanna drink at all um.... take a expensive drink piss in it and drink it you would probably loose the intrest in alcohol beacose the taste and you will probably feel so ill that you decide it's yust smart to put the bottle down.

think about this, now that your sober and every one is drunk, you get to realize how stupid they are acting and laugh at them

It sounds like you're giving up on the wrong thing.

Clubs are never fun unless you are on something. EVER.
I completely disagree with that. I've had a brilliant time clubbing over the years without having to take anything, alcohol, drugs, whatever.

Plus, the ladies often appreciate you being sober enough to make conversation without dribbling incoherently at them :)

I'd have to agree, you should avoid places where the only enjoyment is getting drunk. Unless you REALLY enjoy dancing and loud music, nightclubs will only make you feel annoyed. Personally I enjoy both of those without an ounce of alcohol, but I imagine it'd be different for men.

When I was on probation and not allowed to drink for a few months I would drink non-alchoholic beers, which are not that bad tasting, if you like shitty lite American beer. Most of the time I just drank cranberry juice or something like that, you should stay away from the sodas and sugary stuff, It could be just as damaging to you, more damaging in some ways... and it will make you fat.

And yes I do get annoyed when I am the sober one and everyone else around me is wasted. I realized how douchey everyone is capable of being, but oh well, they are my friends. And I still drink to this day, just not on the level I used to when I was younger.

Good luck with that.

EDIT: Also, weed could be an ok alternative. I don't think it's nearly as destructive as alchohol.

Out of interest, why do you think men would be different from women in this respect?

(Not having a go, just wondering.)

I gave up drink for about 8m months some years ago, because I was training. I drank coke, juice, ect instead.

I still went out with my mates every week. I found that I could still have the craíc and when everone was getting pissed, I could act like a fool and no one would know any better! :p

I don't drink alcohol, but I did drink 2 liters of soda a day before. What I ended up doing is buying cans instead of the 2 liter bottles, drinking Coke Zero from cans and only having regular Coca-Cola when I go out. If you can stomach Coke Zero (or Diet Pepsi, since you mentioned Pepsi Max), the regular drink becomes a reward instead of what you're used to.

I lost 30 pounds, and feel a lot better about myself. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in there. Even though it really has nothing to do with you stopping alcohol, it's still something to think about.
