So I think a holy specced priest would match my aystyle then. Any advice for getting familiar with the mechanics. I don't wanna walk into a group instance or some such thing and cause a party wipe.
Best way to learn is just to practice. Don't take powerlevelling offers, and just go through your early levels "the hard way" (the way people used to before they got all impatient). Honestly, the best way to familiarize yourself with a class's abilities is to use them.

Well, having people to play with is quite fun, makes it more interesting. There's like three main things do to. 1) PVP 2)Raiding or Dungeons 3)Grinding your character's skills and level.

PvP and the Raids or Dungeons are gonna be better since you'll have people to play with and won't need to waste like 20 minutes looking for a party just to have a moody tank leave on you. The rewards for PvP are epic, since you can get epic gear, or get another race's mount without having to be at Exalted reputation status for like Darnauss to get the Tiger mount. I'm sure you'll get into it, like everyone else.
What class and race will depend on what you like. It's usualy pretty fun to try them all. I'm a level 60 Dwarf Paladin :>, but I also got a NE Druid, Blood Elf Warlock, and Dwarf Death Knight.
If your more of a straight forward damage kinda dude, I'd say try a Warrior, but if you like being smart about things and stuff, I'd say Mage or Paladin. Also, grinding is your friend. ;D

Nue, up until now you've said NOTHING about why you disliked it. So MMO's aren't your thing. That's fine, but that doesn't make them bad.

I'm not going to sit here and argue with you the problems inherent with all MMOs (the nature of grinding, jerks on the net, the game feeling like a never-ending beta, etc.) because I have neither the time nor the inclination.

I'm sure whatever stale JRPG it is that you hail as the all-time best game ever, someone else would dislike. That doesn't make either of you wrong, or the game bad. It just means that some people don't like JRPGs.

Believe it or not, there is a way to express a negative opinion without coming off as a giant tool. You're just throwing your around like an arrogant jerk, which is not appreciated by anyone, I'm sure.

I have a bunch of WoW addicts for friends so no worries on having to find people to play with.
You're gonna do just fine, then.

Really, asking advice here is just asking to insulted for playing a game other people find boring. Personally, I could have advice for solo play, but if you have ready access to playmates, there's little I can advise on before you start trying things for yourself. Short breakdown, though...

Druids are jacks-of-all-trades, master of eventually one. Personally, I like them for the shapeshifting.

Hunters are great for solo play, make for good ranged fighters, and get to have an animal companion. My main is one, a gun-toting elf with a leopard companion.

Rogues are good for sneaking up on things and screwing with them. Stealth is really fun to play around with, and they can pick locks. My main secondary is one.

Paladins...I haven't played all that much. I have one, but she's low-level.

Warriors...I also haven't played much, but if you like being in the thick of fighting, they're awesome.

Priests will typically make people love you, and if you like playing support, they're second to none (certain druids and shaman come close). I have one, but I'm going with shadow spells.

Shaman...I've been playing one, but I haven't gotten a feel for her yet. I do like the totem mechanic (you can drop totems that have various effects, powering you up, debuffing the enemy, causing damage, etc.).

Mages make things go boom. If you like spell-slinging, they're great. My secondary secondary is one; I love ice spells for solo potential.

Warlocks can go one of three ways: cursing enemies, blowing them up, or calling demons to lay the unholy smackdown on them. They also have demon companions, like hunters have animal companions. I like them a lot, actually.

You're nowhere close to worrying about Death Knights, but they're fun when you get to them.

Actually, not much I can say here. If you have friends, they can probably sugar daddy you materials to start with, though having a gathering profession still helps. Mining is probably the easiest one to use (and goes with Engineering, Blacksmithing, and Jewelcrafting).

Other than that, just go with whatever seems coolest, I'd say. Inscription, Alchemy, and Enchanting are probably the most group-friendly, while Engineering is the most solo-friendly (and a real kick to use...a ***** to advance in, though).
Well I don't want to be insulted and I know they'res WoW hate but I have faith that the escapist population is mature enough to take things seriously and so far we've only got one troll ^^
Yeah, I was ninja'd quite a few times by some good advice... ^^;

Hey, you got friends. That's a better start that most. You should be fine if you play actively but not obsessively.

Well, My best advice is to make sure you have a friend. A real friend you actually know in real life and converse with regularly. Because without another person to play with, the game is as boring as playing chess with yourself.

Well I'm planning on getting the game World of Warcraft next month so I was wondering if anybody had tips and hints for me. Also advice for how to stick with the game would be awesome sauce. If you love MMO grindfests, it'll be perfect for you. It's by no means terrible, but all MMO's I've tried so far can't hold my attention for too long. But I pretty much agree with most people here. Experiment with classes and skills you like then invest in what works best for you, be prepared to hate people when it comes to PVP and raiding / dungeon running, and be prepared for long, arduous flights, rides, trips, etc. Also, think about practicing your multitasking skills, investing in a mic for "teamspeak", adding several helpful "Addons", and using a macro for skills. That's about all I've got.

My advise would be to stay away. I'm serious.

If however you insist on playing it, you better call a necromancer to sell your soul to Satan if you wanna get anywhere in that goddamn grindfest of an MMO.
