Well I'm planning on getting the game World of Warcraft next month so I was wondering if anybody had tips and hints for me. Also advice for how to stick with the game would be awesome sauce. So feel free to post advice and tips for a WoW newbie and your thoughts on how to stick with a game. I have a bunch of WoW addicts for friends so no worries on having to find people to play with.
Tips that i can give:
Don't listen to people who are against WoW. They're usually jealous.
Ignore the kiddies. Find a guild with nice, mature people.
PvP AND PvE are both fun.
And yeah. Take in the scenery, and have fun :]

Again, as to all the rabid hatred of WoW, I don't understand it. So you pay a little every month to play the game, so what? I would argue that the amount of content you get out of it is not only worth the price, but a fair shake more than you'll get out of one of your precious Half-Life disks (I'm guessing here, but most of the people on here have a huge hard-on for Valve and Half-Life in particular).
I have a raving hard on for both. But they suit different moods, I'll do a run through of HL2 every now and then, and that'll be all I play until I complete it. But WoW has it's appeal too.

Well I have an issue with getting really into a game for a few months then just finding it boring.
That's quite okay. I just usually turn off my subscription the day after I set up a new one, that way, if I really feel like playing for another month I'll have to manually pay again. It's a good safety switch.

In my case this results in playing for a month, stopping for about 2 months, and then trying it for another month. Even though I play this irregularly I still hit 80 (granted, I've had the game for what, 3 years now?) and have done some nice raids, both on 70 and on 80. The next time I turn on my subscription again is probably the release of Cataclysm.

EDIT: My actual anwer to what you were saying is that it's fine to be bored after a month, just take a pause, and when the voices in your head try to whisper you back into Azeroth, just give in and enjoy the ride.

EDIT 2 to avoid double-posting:

Make that "Listen to people who are against WoW, join them, but secretly play it in your cellar at night anyway". Really, it works.

You might want to get a game that you don't have to constantly pay for then.
Well It's more like instead of actually playing the game I'll just sit around and talk to people. I still enjoy it but at the same time I don't get a sense of accomplishment from it.
So you'd be paying for a chatroom? You might as well get a free MMO or something to be honest, similar experience but you don't have to pay.
Well most of the reason I end up like that is because most of the friends I end up making when I'm new to a game have mains so I have nobody to level with and I HATE soloing I just can't force myself to do it. If I have people to level with and do stuff with or at least talk to as I grind then I'm fine.
The reason for the hate is mostly that people have a lot of bad experiences' with the player base.
Once you find a good guild, you shouldn't have many problems but you will get that person who you meet, who puts you down and tells you you're playing it wrong. Not to help you mind, there are some times when a little advice is great but not when they're screaming about a misplaced talent point and ragequiting the group because you couldn't heal them up through 18 enimies attacks while fending off and 5 on your own.

I really enjoy the game! I've heard the american servers have a much friendlier playerbase anyway, so you should be fine.
As long as you have friends by your side, you'll rip through the game. Also, I advice not starting out as a healer because you'll end up stood behind your tank not experiencing the game at all.

Good luck! And I hope you enjoy the game ;3

Edit: Quoted the wrong message sorry, but you get the general idea.

H'okay. If you want to level quickly, I'd recommend making a hunter; they're probably the easiest class to level, and they're quite useful in raiding and PvP. Or, you could make a Paladin: with the ability to tank, heal, and DPS, so you'll never be out of options.

Also, I'd advise you not to buy Burning Crusade until you've hit level 60, and save Wrath of the Lich King till you get to level 70.

OH!
Most importantly, make a character on the Alliance side. Because Alliance is WIN. :D

And one last thing; if RP'ing is your thing, they've got dedicated RP realms... Moon Guard/Wyrmrest Accord are the best for it, IMHO.

**Edit.

Going as a hunter, I'd advise taking the Skinning and Leathworking proffesions. You can only ever have two proffesions at a time, so it's important to choose the right ones. Skinning let's you skin the animals you have killed, and leathworking lets you turn these hides into armor and clothing which you can use; or sell for profit.

Also, whenever you advance past a certain rank of skinning, you gain the passive skill "Master of Anatomy", which increases your critical strike chance significantly with each advancement in level.

And here are two GREAT sites to help you with the game

wowhead.com

wowwiki.com

Use the first for quests; if you having trouble in-game with a quest, just type in the name of the quest into the searchbar on the site, and it'll tell you everything you need to know.

The 2nd site is a wiki-style, and it's pretty useful for looking up Lore, if you feel inclined.

That's my bit: Good luck with the game!

Turn of the games music, it sucks and gets very repetitive. Turn on your iTunes and listen to your own music and amazingly you won't get bored as quickly.

Here is my expeirence with WoW.

1:play to level cap
2:Join guild
3:Get kicked from said guild because I suggest a new strat on a boss we are failing to kill because they are terrible.
4:quit
rince and repeat. Be prepared to deal with A LOT of dumb people in that game, I mean the game itself is easy its just people can't figure out that fire is bad or not to stand in front of a boss that cleaves.

Well as anyone can tell you, WoW is the best MMO online today.
Just because it's the most popular, it doesn't mean it's the best. Is smoking good because so many people do it? Are Britney Spears, Hannah Montanna, the Jonas Brothers and all the other popular shit talented just because they have people drooling over them? Is Glee, Twilight and all the other american gimmicky shite any good just because lots of people like it? If you said yes, then you're simply a drone.

WoW sucks as an MMO. It's a disgrace that brought down the quality of the MMO genre, and now every developer wants a part of the WoW pie, leaving little room for innovative and actually good games.
same logic can be applied to the beetles, the doors rolling stones and pink floyd, some things that are popular suck, but the things you listed are popular with kids, wow is mostly played by adults regardless of what people who have very little experience playing it say.
Applying his logic to the beetles (sic) doesn't really accomplish anything, though. I'm pretty sure Natdaprat isn't arguing that there aren't popular things that are also of good quality. He's arguing, and rightly so in my opinion, that just because something is popular, does not make it good. And why you're bringing in whether or not WoW is played by adults or kids, I honestly have no idea. What does that have to do with anything?
To quote yahtzee on this: Sometimes things are popular for a reason. I don't think 10 million people are playing a game they don't like. If you don't like it, fair enough but not everyone believes the same as you.

@PostalDude

...Meh

Avoid Mabi. Shoddy gameplay, graphics are overtly Japanesy... really, every other free MMO i've played just can't compare to the goodness that is WoW.

Besides, we've got four fully-explorable continents. Continents.

And the in-game music is fantastic! Though it can get a bit repetitive after a couple of hours, I don't really mind; the quality is just superb.

**Oh, and it's 11 million people now. They started with only about a million or so; the player base has grown exponentially since the games release.

But the key here is to have FUN, so don't get caught up in the rush to hit the level cap; questing and exploring the MASSIVE world is an experience in-and-of itself.

Gotta disagree... don't rob yourself of the ambiance and atmosphere of the zones, etc. the first time though. The game music is not so boring or repetitive that you can't enjoy and appreciate it for your first toon pretty much all the way to 80. Every zone and sub-zone have interesting musical things going on that really help with the mood of the story/zone theme. The first time you walk into Stormwind coming out of Elwynn forest, or step foot into the Undercity, you'll be glad you left it on...

Yes, eventually you'll turn off the game music when you've been grinding at 80 for a while, but that's a few months down the road.

Actually, I'm honestly curious as to why you say this. I just recently got my main up to 55 (well...59 now), and I rolled a death knight almost immediately. I have to say, that opening series of events was quite well done and affecting, and the class seems to be fun so far.

I'm only 58, and I've returned to concentrating on my Alliance characters, but is there anything I should watch out for?

Ah, I see.

Well, those downsides seem to revolve solely around social interaction, though. As a solo player by heart, I suspect I don't have much to worry about.

It's a good game, grind your way to 80-90? but don't forget to enjoy the ride.
A lot of people will tell you it's rubbish, and on some points they may have a point. But all in all it's a solid experience and good fun.

Having a few friends will make life easier, some early gold goes a long way to offset the hardships of the lower levels.

WoW is awesome, much better if u play with friend and have ventrilo but it does eat ur whole life. I do sometimes wish i had never started playing it. Some ppl don't take to it tho. Also Alliance ftw. Horde cities are awful.

My suggestions/tips:

1. Before buying the game, download and play the 10 day free-trial, so you can get your feet wet w/out paying. If you end up being iffy about the game after that, then just buy the original WoW, Burning Crusade is only needed if you want to play Blood Elves/Draneai and play Paladins as Horde, and Shamans as Aliance, in the beginning, but it will be needed when you get to level 58. The soonest you'll need Wrath of the Lich King is level 68 (55 if you want to try Death Knights).

EDIT: I forgot the level cap of 20 that it has. You could at least use the free trial to sample the classes :p

2. Yes, it does get better at 80.

3. If you're going to do healing, you'll be able to get your first attempt at it at level 15, when you can start doing dungeons.

4. Also, if you do lvl a priest as a healer, you'll probably want to use the 'Random Dungeon Finder' to level, rather then questing, since the que should be instant for you, and I heard from a friend, soloing/questing as a holy priest is painful.

I have the same exact problem. The curious thing is that WoW generally doesn't do that for me - I think it's because I have friends that play and the social component is pretty nice.

As far as advice? Take it slowly, and enjoy the game. You don't need to grind to max level to have fun (some of the most fond memories I have is of lowbie dungeon running with friends). Read the quests - there a bunch of really fun lore quests scattered throughout the game that you'll only find by doing long chains. Plus with Cataclysm coming out in the next 6 months or so you'll probably never level through this content again.

Also, don't let the stigma of playing WoW get to you. I know I played WoW for most of my time at college, was part of a raiding guild (so I saw all of the 40 man content in Vanilla, and up to Black Temple in Burning Crusade, I graduated in '08) for most of that time, and graduated with a 3.7 with a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology. It actually helped me learn some pretty sweet time management skills.

I don't see why people are harping on the "community being full of dicks"... there are 11 million people playing the game, guys. Of course there's going to be some assholes out there. Luckily, there aren't a lot of them: in my experience, most of the people i've come across in the game are quite friendly.

Show respect, and you'll receive it in turn. When you come across an asshat, put him on ignore and walk away; it's a big world, after all. Plenty of room for everyone.

That's pretty much my experience. I know I've started leveling a character recently so I can see all the old world content for one last time, and since I don't have any BoA gear on him people assume I'm a first-timer; almost every single one of them have been more than helpful and friendly.
