story and atmosphere are faaaaaaaar superior to blivion, but the graphics, animation and combat blow moderatly sized chunks. I still love it, it's my favorite game to date. just run with it, but keep in mind it's 8 years old

in general though, it kicks oblivion's ass

Heads up, if your going to roll a mage character its an almost must to get a mod that makes magicka regenerate, otherwise youll spend a crap load of time resting while your magicka regens. Oh ya, nothing like resting outside after burning down all your magaicka casting spells to a surprise wakeup call from a bandit when you have less then half mana.

Buy it off steam and you'll have it all.
Sorry to de-rail the thread a bit, but as someone totally new to Steam, is Steam's Morrowind any different than what you'd buy off the shelf? Is it updated in any way to accommodate newer machines (my Morrowind tends to freeze/stop working on my computer)? Can it be modded?
My friend has the steam version and it tends to crash on him a lot. He's never ran it on a disc (on his current PC) before so it could just be the machine, but I'd definitely like to know the answer of this question too.
i had this problem alot to. what i did is downloaded the morrowind code patch http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19510. this mod is great and if your running the steam version it is an absolute must. been playing the game for weeks after downloading it and my game hasnt crashed once.

Morrowind is VASTLY different from Oblivion. Argonians and Kajhit cannot wear footwear, nor full faced helmets, blocking is all luck(although on a successful block,ALL damage is stopped),in fact, all of combat, magic, and most of stealth is luck. Vampirism (to my knowledge) is MUCH rarer, just as easy to get rid of in the early stages,MUCH HARDER to get rid of when terminal, and all vampires in the game are extremely powerful, clad in extremely tough armour, and spreading death (and sometimes undeath) to those around them using Glass/Ebony/Deadric weapons, there's a second disease class to handle, known as "Blight",creature diseases are FAR more frequent, anything better than Steel MUST be found in very specific places. You can get a deadric weapon early in the game by finding an ebony mine near Balamora and reporting it to a certain Dunmer House Leader in Vivec (St.Olms district, top floor, haunted manor, pick a lvl 50 lock). Speaking of deadra, you need an enchanted and/or Silver/Dwarven/Glass/Ebony/Deadric weapon to harm them. You need very specific souls(Golden Saints)to make constnt effect enchantments(on the plus side, you can put more than one effect and all that on a WEAPON to boot). You'll be hoofing it A LOT unless you decide to be a Mysticism buff for the teleportation spells.
Although this all may seem negative,I find it all positive. It makes the game difficult and challenging, which provides an overall more rewarding experience when you do something or find something like the Deadric Face of God (one of three Deadric helmets, best helmet stat wise in-game). Also, did I mention the alteration spell that allows you to FLY? I had ENDLESS fun with that spell.

All NPCs stick around to their path or just stand somewhere, so their houses are always empty and they never sleep or eat...

The voice acting is horrid.

Actually, the rest of the game is pretty cool. The weapons, by default, are pretty cool - I love spears, for one thing... The guilds are pretty cool, the thieves guild especially... And you can get away with murder in the cities thanks to the way diplomacy works in that game - with enough Speaking skill and high enough Charisma, you can repeatedly offend people until they attack you and you can kill them off in self-defense without incurring ANY guard aggro or fines... I loved that...

The mana doesn't regenerate unless you drink potions or sleep, the weapon attack animations are HORRID (3 attacks only, and just like 1 or 2 of them work well with any selected weapon) and you don't get anything new if you get to max weapon skill - no special attacks like in Oblivion.

And, of course, whether your attacks land on monsters or not depends on your weapon skill alone... You can be the best FPS-sniper ever, but with low skill in shooting you'll never hit them no matter how close you are. It's annoying as fucking hell, especially considering how you can't see the levels on monsters... Your attacks shouldn't just rely on stats, they should also account for your personal accuracy, I think I like Oblivion better in that respect.

So, yeah, Morrowind is pretty cool and Bloodmoon expansion is amazing. Trust me. You can help build a fucking city and everything, and play around with magic vikings.

Aside from the things mentioned above Morrowind has a much steeper learning curve. If you go into the first little thieves cave by the starting town within like the first hour, you'll get owned if you don't know the game somewhat already.

Also, it has much more lore, there are more books and some are pretty long and make for decent short stories. People say alot more and there are more topics to hear about, however i attribute that to the lack of voice acting.

The pace is much slower, literally because your character is VERY slow without having 75+ points in speed and athletics in your major skills, mages and some warriors will get bored simply running everywhere.

And contrary to what others have said, Oblivion has a larger world, Morrowind has more variety but most of the continent is covered in uninteresting ashland.

The biggest general difference between the two is that morrowind has less 'convenience' concepts to it, such as fast travel and quest markers, even things like voice acting can be a downer if you've taken it for granted.

Morrowind is much better. The world is bigger and it's very easy to get totally immerse in it. I have played this game so many times I could draw the game world on a piece of paper.

There are TONS of mods out there to make the game even more enjoyable. Houses, textures, characters, classes, quests, the list goes on and on.

I won't mention all the differences between Oblivion and Morrowind, if I did then you would have nothing to discover. So I will just say enjoy the ride. It's an awesome journey.

Pretty much everything has been said, except this:
There is no questmarker that tells you specifically where to go, which door to open, and which container to search. You'll have a journal which tells you something like "Go east from Balmora, head north at so and so, look for tomb X near the intersection of two roads." It can be frustrating at times (like magic/combat), but it can also be quite rewarding when you finally find the place and feel like you've followed real directions given by a real person.

But yeah, it's an amazing game, easily one of the most imersive RPGs out there. You can play it without mods, although a graphical fix that removes the fog (a remnant of a less powerful PC era) is not a bad idea.

NOT FUCKING LOLCATS AGAIN

Anyways, there's no travel system (yay), there's alot less dialogue (meh), the graphics are worse (yay for me at least), the storyline is alot better (yay), the storyline is alot longer (yay), the game world is more interesting (yay (don't listen to croix)), the game world is bigger (yay (again, don't listen to croix), there are more quests (yay), there are no levelling monsters (yay), the combat system is different (meh because neither are very good (daggerfall combat ftw (wheee bracketfuck))), slightly more immersive (yay), there are less mods (aw), and I guess that's all you really need to know.

Go get the iceclaymore at level 1 and lol at your enemies up till level 10.The best part of this game is you can get overpowered items at lvl1 and feel godlike until you get to the higher levels. There is alot of openness in the game and watch out who you kill you can break the main questline.(unless you want to do some way out of the way questing and laborious work that involves killing a god)

The steam version is pretty stable, atleast on my machine (windows 7 professional).
Its hard to mod the game when you have it off steam, but its definately up to date.

I will agree that certain mods make the game more fun, but I didn't use any on my playthrough and it was still epic.

Morrowind is actually smaller than oblivion, but in Morrowind you don't have horses to travel with and the only fast travel you can use are silths striders, and most of oblivion is flat grassland... while Morrowind has a large diversity :)

It is much better HOWEVER. Remember that this game is old. The graphics will look awful comapared to Oblivion. If you get the pc version look out. I am not a graphics whore by any means but even I was shocked after comming back to it after ES4.

Morrowind. ZOMG! I'll quote you an excerpt from The Rough Guide To Cyrodill here:

"Morrowind has many vibrant towns, manufactured from any number of materials including shells, fungi and traditional stone and mortar. However getting to them is going to either be long or expensive, the local silt strider operators can see a tourist coming for miles and seem to hike their prices beyond acceptable levels. If you choose the walking option, be prepared to encounter all sorts of fauna on your route, oh and don;t expect variance in the terrain, Morrowind redefines the various shades of brown to show there are many more than most folks would have believed possible."

The game itself is fun. Big, open and immersive in a way Oblivion failed to be. Combat still blows, but I prefer the lack of mana regeneration. It makes being a magic user more difficult. Which stops them being the catch all uber pwnerator of doom. Meaning there is a point to sword swinging. Simply put it balances the mage with the warrior, and that's only a good thing.

I did not play either game for very long because I did not like them. So take this for what it is. Just my opinion.

I don't recall why I stopped playing Oblivion. I think after playing Bioshock which eases you into all the fiddly bits of a typical RPG, I did not appreciate being thrown whole hog into it in Oblivion. I think it was having to deal with the inventory that pissed me off. Gathering bits of string and old chewing gum to save up to eventually craft shit, I didn't want to have to deal with that. That and the "very fine" weapons stuff. I could probably give it another go now, but right after Bioshock where you don't have to deal with that bullshit, I just didn't feel like dealing with that bullshit.

Morrowind, however I didn't like because of one thing and one thing only: the combat. I thought it was the worst thing I have ever seen, and I've seen I Know Who Killed Me. How it works is you go up to a creature and then just hold down the attack button. Your character makes the stabby-stab animation, but it's bullshit because whether you hit or not is determined by your character's stats. So you miss a lot. I hated it so much, I uninstalled and would have sold it to you except I got it off Steam when they had that sale. I regret every penny of the three buck I spent on it and I regret every second I spent playing it. I hated the combat that much. I hated it so much, I do not care if the rest of the game is made of solid platinum and blow jobs. I rank it as one of the worst games I've ever played because of it.

I'm bothering to tell you this because you might want to think twice before getting it. The fans will tell you that combat takes some getting used to. I'm telling you the combat is a deal breaker. So, it's something you should consider before purchasing.

Morrowind was a fun game. I remember punching Vivec to death. Ahh good times. Also getting your guild house, exploring and flying were great.

Going back to it recently though I can see how some people may be put off by some of the environments seeming a bit brown and dull. I like 'el though. I love the town that is inside a giant crab and all the mushrooms etc. The environments are a lot more varied and interesting than in Oblivion I think.

A few things
- The boots of blinding speed are a must have
- fucking cliff racers
- lots and lots of walking
- levitation spells!
- Jumping spells!
- fucking cliff racers
- Daedric Armour is even more kickass, but also EXTREMELY RARE!
- You may find a particularly useful trader of the crustacean variety in the vicinity of Bal Fel. Hint hint.
- when the quest tells you to 'breath the waters' it means drown yourself. You wont die don't worry.
- FUCKING CLIFF RACERS!
