...and I am wondering if anyone has any good tips on how to get the most out of it.

Bear in mind that apart from A Link to the Past, this is my first time playing an old school RPG.

Is small guns as important as it was in F3?

And are there any dump skills/perks thatI should not bother with?

What difficulty should I choose? Is it ok on normal or is it very tough for a new player?

Any other general help or tips will be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure that the game is much fun without tagging small guns but by the end you will probably move on to overpowered energy rifles. Strength might be the least useful stat but don't min max too much on character creation. Try not going below 4 on anything or above about 7.

Don't give any automatic weapons to Ian. Never stand between him and anything hostile.

This is a game that is full of little tips and tricks that can make it much easier -- just make sure you explore thoroughly. Half of the fun is figuring the whole thing out for yourself and finding little "secrets" along the way. I'll just offer a few broad tips: The most general bit of advice to offer is that you should save often. F1 isn't as tough as F2, but it will probably be pretty rough if this is your first time with a game like this. And if you haven't made your character yet, don't worry about "luck", I'd say. That's as much as I'll say.

Cheers guys. Think I'm gonna focus on small guns, speech, lockpick and science.

What about the limit? I have to admit I felt a little disheartened when I found out about it. Can I afford to take my time and explore F3 style?

You can afford to take your time. trust me, it's plenty.

Also, I disagree. If you're using small guns, agil is by far the most important stat. agility is directly how many moves you can make a turn. Strength is what you use to carry stuff and hit people, and doesn't affect, obviously, how hard your bullets hit. I'm trying not to spoil the game, but I don't think telling you how the stats actually work is doing anything particularly evil.

Beyond that, I agree. the fun of RPGs is finding stuff out for yourself. Fallout is a lot of fun. enjoy :)

Eh, yes and no. There are a few ways to extend the limit that aren't too hard to figure out. It should only be a problem if you really take your time. Most likely, once you "find out" then you'll want to do... that... soon. I didn't really like the limit either. It's gone in Fallout 2, at least.

Make sure that you know all of the game's controls before you play it, I've heard people complain that "the whole game is turn-based" without realising you're supposed to end combat..

Nowadays whenever I replay Fallout 1 or 2, I always get 10 agility. I just can't bring myself not to be able to shoot most weapons twice per turn :p . Or hit 3-5 times.

Usually it's a good idea to put one tag-skill to a combat skill.

You say that as though Ian won't find a way to hit you accidentally anyway. ;) He uses quantum bullets when he crit misses.

Erm, my last playthrough, I think I went (Stats)
ST-5
PE-7
EN-5
CH-4
IN-7
AG-7
LU-5
With Small Guns, Speech (to bump the stat back) and Repair tagged

But that was going for an evil genius bastard gunslinger build. No matter what you do, you'll find a way to go about it in a way that's fun and a challenge in some part or another. That's the beauty of the Fallout games

Wait, why did you put 7 on Perception. Small Guns use agility right?
Here are my stats:
ST-5 or 4 (If I need extra agility I take 1)
PE-5
EN-5
CH-5
IN-7
AG-10 or 9 (Depends, if I want to excessively use small guns I put 10)
LU-4

Strength- 5 is enough to handle any weapon, power armor gives you 3 and you can have an implant +1.
PE- Not needed that much, probably gives some accuracy, but having +100 Small Guns takes care of accuracy. Also you can get an implant.
EN- Average is OK, when you get loaded with stimpacks, it isn't that much of a problem.
CH- Also can be boosted and five is enough to get you trough some of the bullshit people will give you.
IN- It's important, if you have 4 or less, most people wouldn't have a normal talk with you.
AG- The most important one, I know that if you get 8, you can get +1 by perk and +1 from an implant, but I just love firing a lot.
LU- You can get it to 5 by a perk and you mainly need it for criticals.

Also I always tag Small Guns. I also tag Lockpick a lot, it's just so useful in every point of the game. Third is optional, I tend to put Steal if I want to get rich fast, Science is also very useful.

It's always useful for traps and increases the chance to hit targeted body parts, from memory.

Here's a tip. Don't listen to any of these jokers. Fallout's one of those games where to get the best out of it, you need to go your way. I personally like big guns..so I always run around trying to find them. And they're pretty damn awesome at tearing shit up. Butyou do what you want? K?

I preferred fallout 2. Make a character with less than 3 intelligence on fallout 2. Do it.

I think that if that happens, you talk like a dumb ass and people think that you need to wear a protecting helmet and drool less.

Everything you would ever need to know! [http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout.html]

I used that guide (and the one he made for F2) as guideline and sometimes walkthrough help, but he has everything you would ever need to know. Now enjoy one of the best RPG games ever!
