It's not a "terrible" game if you can overlook a lot of it's flaws.

It is worth playing.

Being sold at full price under the Dragon Age name made it absolute piss, but if you get it at $20 and call it Drama Age it is a decent attempt at RPG.
Should you play it... well if you like drama over substance then go for it.

I dunno, for me I found the gameplay worse than DA:O. But for me I dont waste my time and effort playing a bioware game on nightmare difficulty. I could, but I dont play bioware games for the challenge, I play them for the story. With that said, the gameplay typically consisted of kiting each dungeons mobs to the boss trigger point, then force your companions (if they are still alive) to that point and just wipe out less mobs over all and do so in less time not having to fight the secondary waves of each group. This technique was applicable to both games, though DA2 made it infinitely harder because you were not able to lock your companions into place, thus they followed you if you got too far, and in turn that means they were walking aggro magnets that only served as a ball and chain to force you to fight excessive waves of NPCs that invariably would be reinforced out of thin air.

TL;DR
I really didnt see either of them being tactical, as the only tactic you really need is kite the entire dungeon to the nearest cutscene trigger and in turn fight less mobs overall.

I guess....

but it just wouldnt feel right not playing the first (Im weird that way)

one day I might...also I fidn the fact that Im "stuck" with Geralidt a little off-putting (jsut a minor nit-pick)
I had kind of the same thing. I played the Witcher until i was in the second chapter and then, well, just didn't wanted to anymore.
After quite a while and one horrible dissapointment (Yes, that one) and The Witcher 2 was coming, i thought to myself "Hey, why not try it again". And i had really really really much fun with it. I can't explain it, but the second try made much more fun.
I would give it a try if i were you.

DA2 is an awful game... a weird sensation came over me as I began to play that took me some time to place. Usually a bad game makes me feel disappointed or pissed off but no this was different.... It was then I realised that, for the first time ever, I actually felt embarrassed for the people responsible for this. I don't know if it was the sloppy combat, the laughable voice acting or what. Maybe it was just that I knew that bio ware is capable of much better. power to ya if you are able to enjoy this but based on my experience I could not live with myself if I recommended this game to anyone.

i find it greatly underrated and a great game, especially if story is important to you, because it has a great one. true the combat system is a bit unchallenging and dull but its still a great game by all means

-shrug- I really liked DA2...

I barely even noticed the flaws until everyone else was kind enough to point them out to me. I guess I was just having too much fun in the game to notice. Too. Much. Fun. >>'

Decent game marred with a lot of bad design decisions. Overused dungeons, enemies that pop out of nowhere and far too linear. But that writing is good, the characters are interesting, however I preferred the battle system of DA0 a lot more. More strategic. They should of made DA2 more like DA0 with just a better art style.

It was a case of taking a great RPG with a bland art style and dumbing it down too much to try and appeal to the masses, and it backfired.

The problem with the DA2 freak-out of '11 was that it was just another in a string of freak-outs. Gamers find a new, "Worst game ever!!" every 6 months at the most.
Meh, I think it is longer than six months. I honestly can't remember a game that was more hated than DA2 for a while there. Not even MW3. Though, ME3 has kind of taken it's place for the last couple months. Hurray?

Remember kids: EA is the devil and Activision is the antichrist. They destroy anything they touch and any games published by them are guaranteed to be 100% pure awful! And if any reviewers actually like the games and give them good ratings, they are paid-off and unprofessional. Be sure to tell them that loudly and often. Especially when talking about games in similar genres.

The story is a bit unfocused, but the 2nd and 3rd act are really good.

The combat isn't as boring as in DA:O, faster-dynamic animations, you're able to close the distance between you and an opponent within a second and not 5. It's much nicer that your character has facial expressions, but the voice is a bit weird if you're going for mutliple playthroughs with the same gender.

The characters are kind of forgettable, but they do serve the purpouse in the story.

For a game that was rushed (1 year, 6 months I believe), it turned out fucking great.

If I had to get out on a limb, I'd say I prefer DAII to DA:O because of the combat, the dialogue, the character designs and the story( because it's not the usual, join super-special group and save the world fare). The characters' personalities, however, go to Origins.

Just read the cliff notes or something, that should bring you up to speed.

Although, if you want to play an RPG in which you have exactly zero choice, then DA2 is the game for you.

It's not a bad game, combat is nice and fluid, although more of a hack and slash on Xbox. What kills it is lack of control over party equipement, repetitive dungeons( 5 at most, which you revisit every other quest) and some odd character developement, and by odd, I mean totally out of character, illogical, and downright dumb.

Not a bad game, I like how the story was spaced out over time, with a different plotline for every act, but overall, I can't really recommend it over other games.

It has a lot of copy/paste in the environments and a lot of walking around in between fights.

Other than that, it's a pretty good game.

No, don't bother playing it unless you're totally out of other RPGs.

I'd recommend just finishing Dragon Age: Origins, then get the Awakening expansion and some of the other DLC if you need a DA fix. There will be virtually no continuation of characters from older games into Dragon Age 3 so you may as well skip the second entirely if the third turns out to be a game worthy of purchase (unlikely at this point).

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning would be a better buy than DA2 and will probably be around the same price soon enough. I've spent at least sixty hours in it thus far (over 3x the average DA2 playthrough) and don't think the halfway point has been reached yet. New IPs deserve to be rewarded to boot, especially when they're doing something fresh. That's my tuppence worth.

people on the escapist overacted to the game way too much, the combat is better as is the art style, the story isn't as good as the first in terms of epicness but it's still pretty solid
the characters are good so definitely play it

Get it and play it. As long as you're not expecting DA:O 1.5, chances are you'll enjoy it. That's really where a large portion of the hate comes from; not from DA2 being a necessarily bad game but just because it *gasp* isn't actually the slightly more polished version of DA:O.

If you're really committed to the DA story and lore then go ahead and get it... but only if you can get a $5 - $10 used copy. Apart of that, it's hard to outright recommend it.
