So, in the upcoming update you can adopt kids in Skyrim.

Wait. "Adopt?" Do I have to kill their parents first? Because around 70% of Skyrim characters are immortal, which should make building my army very difficult.

So, apparently, an efficient way to annoy at least a subset of TES fans is to either

a) Not give them the option to kill children
or
b) Give them the option to adopt children

There must be a pattern here, but I just can´t figure it out.

Oh... My... God... REALLY?!

Well I can't wait, I'd save as many children as I could from that horrible Orphan matron.
That was the first thing I thought of when I read the headline. :)

it would be cool to take the kid to visit uncle Parthurnax :D
then when they act a shit, you threaten to leave them with him for a few days....

Meh, a totally optional game mechanic I can't see myself using. Oh well, no great shakes.

I would like to see them bring in a Hardcore option like in New Vegas at some point though, as having the ability to craft all kinds of food items but then no requirement to eat just seems kinda pointless. Oh, and the ability to craft arrows, just so that my totally self sufficient woodsman character can be totally self sufficient. I'm guessing there are already PC mods for these things, but they have not as yet been endorsed by Bethesda and ported to consoles.

So, no option to have children? And maybe create them so that they didn't turned out little pricks? That's out of the question?

If it is out of the question, I will enjoy taking that kid that keeps telling me that I should lick his father's boots and put him in the same room as 30 angry draugr. Accidentaly, of course

So, you can adopt, but you can't have kids of your own. Not that that's particularly bad, it's just... odd.
I can't really see myself doing this, but it's nice to know the option is there.

Oh no, you can adopt kids! How will we ever cope with this new, optional feature! That's gamer logic for you. If you have the option of doing something, you're forced to do it.

I doubt I'll use the feature, but hopefully those who want it have fun with it.
I'm usually very wary of this type of argument. Typically a feature that impacts the game's design or the user experience is construed as not impacting the game if you don't use it. In this case, I actually do feel safe in assuming my personal Skyrim experience will not be impacted if I simply ignore this optional feature.

However, I don't think it's unreasonable to criticize a feature I don't like, however optional it may be. I also regret the loss of whatever I may or may not have gotten instead of this feature I do not like. Finally, this addition could be indicative of the sort of features we can expect in future updates, DLC or titles. Expanding on one thing could possibly crowd out another. I think all this is particularly relevant to the Elder Scrolls series because it's pretty clear not everything they have in mind makes it into the game.

I just don't see what's wrong with saying "less of this, more of that".

Hah. As soon as I entered this thread, George Carlin's "Kids and Parents" routine started up on my media player.
"Something else I'm getting tired of, is all this stupid bullshit we have to listen to all the time about children. It's all you hear in this country: Children, help the children, what about the children? Save the children! You know what I say? Fuck the children. Fuck 'em. They're getting entirely too much attention. And I know what you're thinking: "Jesus, he's not going to attack children, is he?" Yes he is. He's going to attack children."

OT: Well, I stopped playing Skyrim a few months ago, moved on to other things, but it's... interesting? That they're including this. I don't see why there are people who are getting all aggressive about it though, not like it's going to be shoved in your face. Well, hopefully at least.

You can? Really? Why are they only adding the lame stuff from the Game Jam? :| Oh well. I won't adopt a kid. I don't even have a home!

I'm probably not going to punch Todd Howard over it, but I don't like this feature. When I heard the details of marriage in Skyrim, I was like- "huh?" It's not bad exactly, just out of place. And now they are expending time and effort to expand the family concept, presumably to the exclusion of something I might like. I would prefer they spent that time expanding on the game's core appeal of exploring a fantasy world. I'm actually open to the possibility that marriage and whatever could be made to support that core appeal, but in their current form they don't. I'm not even sure why they're in the game at all. Maybe someone was trying to keep up with Fable, of all things.

First, I like the "probably" that was thrown in there. It made me laugh.

I can see where you're coming from. It is out-of-place in a game ostensibly about dungeon diving and ruining the economy of several small towns and cities while shouting "FUS RO DAH!" at guards. I guess I can't muster up any form of emotional response because the game is seven months old now and while I enjoyed it for the time I played it, I just don't care about it anymore because I've got other games to play. (Of course, I also have no vested interest in The Elder Scrolls. Skyrim was the first one I could actually play for longer than half an hour without getting bored.)

But then, I'm pretty apathetic toward most things that garner strong feelings from other gamers.

Will I be able to use them as companions? The last I heard, children were untouchable in Skyrim. I;ll use them like I used Tails in Sonic 2, as an immortal little thing that did most of hard stuff.

For everyone who're complaining about this, it said you CAN adopt a kid, thereby implying that it's optional (like the vast majority of the stuff in a sandbox game).

My dream of being followed around by a horde of Zombie Children might actually come true (with the help of some mods)? Yay!

Remember that ugly tavern wench you woke up next to after a long night partying with Sam Guevenne? Nine months later she shows up at your house with the ugliest child you've ever seen.
