learn to use red stone dust, i've been toying with AND gates and i have made a door which is hidden behind a painting (you can walk through paintings, place em then destroy the blocks behind em) and two hidden levers that are burried around my house and once both are activated it lets you in.
How do I go about setting up levers and switches? I don't really get how you make them do anything specific...

Don't use the Wiki. It's really fun experimenting and trying to figure out what you can make with the resources you have.

I'm thinking about buying it.

If I loved the classic version, will I like the full version?
Yes, I think you'd love it. And it costs much less now than it will when it's finished. Buy now and save the cash.
what's in the full version

I think it has more craft-able items and some more features. But I don't know exactly sorry.

Haha, I wish...

And how do you go about building something in the sky?
Usually I build a pillar into the sky, and attach a ladder. From there, I inch myself to the edge of the pillar until the edge of the top block is selected, and start building outwards. Once the building is complete you could knock the pillar down, but getting back into your sky castle could be tricky after that.

well, levers, buttons and preasure pads can open and close doors, blow up TNT and switch mine cart tracks. when a switch is hit is is set to on or off, and stays that way till it is hit again, buttons are off until hit, then they are on for 1 second before turning off again. preasure pads come in wood and stone, they are active as long as something is on them. wood pads can be activated by anything on them (you, mobs, dropped objects and minecarts) while stone can only be activated by you, mobs or a minecart with someone in it.

when on or off they only affect anything in the adjecent square or 2 squares below it, but if you put red stone dust there it will act as a wire, moving the current up to 15 blocks away from its power source.

it can take a while to learn but once you get better you can add reapeters (they add another 15 blocks to the range each), inverters that take an on current and turn it off and vice versa, and logic gates (AND gates, OR gates etc).

i advise you read all of this
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Gates#Gate_Logic
that explains it, aswell as look at some youtube videos (almatybob has some good ones).

Ahh, thanks for all the Info! A lot of logic there that I didnt expect, reminds me of my A Level computing class :p

I'll look into that link tonight.

Get A Bow and some arrows, so you can more successfully fight creepers, give your house a proper tower (for defense). Make some TNT and mine the crap out some mountains or (better yet) the ground your home is built on.

I've been mentally planning an extension to my humble log cabin to involve some stone towers and a walk way around the perimeter.

two useful things to remember are how redstone torches work and how power is transmitted from button, switches and pads.

a torch placed on the side of a block will accept input from the top of the block, but not output to the top of the block. what this means is if you get a wire ontop of a block, and a torch on the side when an on wire hits the torch this way it turns the torch off, inverting the power. this is useful to know as it is required for making gates.

the other thing is that a switch/button/pad will power down 2 blocks, meaning

I
X
-------

where I is the switch, X is a block and ---- is the wire the wire will accept power, allowing you to hide the wires for a tidier look.

For the first few nights, stay inside. Craft, and don't get too anxious - it takes a little while to get going. To craft weapons, armor, or what have you, consult the Wiki [http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Weapon], and NEVER DIG STRAIGHT DOWN.

I think it's fine to dig straight down so long as it's not literally straight down digging. If you stand on the same square and dig down you'll eventually hit lava, then you're screwed. If you dig 2x2 then that's fine since you realize where the lava is and can get away.

Think of something really cool that would take ages to build, then build it.

Two weeks ago I drew up a plan for a 50x50x100 Pyramid/Water Fountain/Island/Thing, and it kept me pretty busy until about 5 minutes ago.

Oh, you got the alpha to work...

Well, I guess enjoy the game then.
