So I've Noticed a Trend in People's Furry Avatars

I don't personally know anybody who identifies as a furry, but whenever I see a person with a furry for an avatar, I see one constant.

That smile. Every damn furry picture has it, the same creepy(in my opinion, anyways) smile. So can anyone tell me what that's all about or is it just some unknown trend that isn't going away any time soon.

EDIT: To specify on "Furries", I mean the ones who use anthropomorphic forms of various animals. The ones that look like people, but with more hair and funny noses.

Who's got a furry avatar? Do you mean mine too? The only one I've seen is VampireCat and I rather like her avatar.

I meant the anthropomorphic ones specifically, the foxes/dogs/whatever with humanoid bodies. I don't think I've ever seen a picture like that where the subject didn't have one of those smiles...

I read that title as "Funny Avatars". Teach me to read properly.

OT: I have no idea, I don't tend to notice too many furry avatars round my circles. The whole furry thing is a bit......wierd to me.

That's actually just a small subset of furries. In actuality the term Furry refers to anyone who identifies themselves as or with an animal, be it mythological or real.

I've seen maybe 3 or 4 around this site, though it could be one or two people just changing their avatars, I rarely pay attention to names on forums as big as this.

...what? like mine? (the cropping has chopped the ears off DX)

I don't think there are to many. Neither do I see this being a problem.

Hard to tell underneath the hand, but to be quite honest I wouldn't have realised it was furry if you hadn't pointed it out.

Yes there are a few but what's the problem do they creep you out?
It's not like it offends me, it's just kind of odd.

I'd use google to find an example, but I'm afraid of what might come up.

Safe search is your friend, make sure to put it on high though.

The smile gets you? I think what gets me is that people are somehow attracted to cartoon cat people.

Strict safe search still yields dicks within the first five images, it seems. Yeah I'm going to postpone the search for now... Maybe take a cold shower.

In my travels of the internet I see 4 groups:

1. Fursuit sex fiends
2. Furries who wish they were fursuit sex fiends
3. People begging for acceptance
4. Batshit crazies i.e. "I'm not a human who thinks I'm an arctic fox, I'm an arctic fox who looks like a human. Honest."

Perhaps you peruse less than reputable sites? I don't know what to tell you, other than there is a lot more out there than what you've seen. For instance: VG Cats is a furry comic because Scott, the creator draws the characters as animals. This is true for a lot of webcomics and most of them, that I've seen, are quite on the level.

...and why are they always like, neon green cartoon cat people with hot pink leopard spots and rainbow wings?

What the hell kind of sense does that make?

VG Cats is a furry comic
The hell it is. Anthropomorphic =/= furry. Bugs bunny is not furry, Anubis is not furry, Sly Cooper is not furry.

And no, not every furry avatar I see has "that smile", whatever mysterious quality it is you are referring to.

No it isn't. Even on the highest level, searching for some imaged I wanted from Sam & Max gave me a very disturbing fan made porno drawing in the first few results. I can never leave Sam and Sybil alone together again. >_<

Okay, I found the particular user that sparked me to ask this question... http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/PatSilverFox

I don't want to single him out, so "PatSilverFox", if you're out there please don't take offense at my using your avatar as an example. It's just the least traumatizing way for me to get my point across. And if you do read this, maybe you have the answer to my question.
