A lot of furries do wear fursuits and some do get more than their fair share of nookie on occasion. As for doing it in a suit...well I don't go for the whole fursuiting thing in general but I've seen a vast range of suits in my time and not one has the...accommodations...necessary for in-suit humping.

As for the OP, a lot of artists do "Icon Commissions" in which they post a "generic" icon of a character and then edit it to match someone's avatar in terms of colouration and so on. The linework though remains the same and this can be why the same expression crops up a lot.

Hope that helps!

PS Yes I am a fur, no I'm not gay and I don't own a fursuit. That's the two main preconceptions dealt with!

I've never noticed it myself. But maybe you're just predisposed to thinking they're weird.
Sir, are you implying that I am some form of... furryist?

I dare say you have insulted my honour, and I challenge you to a duel.

That's actually very helpful, thanks. Consider this question answered.

I agree with that part where it says in the OT that furry avatars have the character smiling in a whimsical way. Personally, I find whimsicalness and quirky characters to be annoying if this is their prime trait.

For any furry, I have a question:
I think that minators and werewolves are awesome. I do not find them sexually attractive in any way shape or form, but there is a slight fascination towards these badass creatures of destruction. Is that being a furry?

For my (and at least 248 other people on this site) definition of furry, yes it would. So tell me, how does it feel being a furry?

I think people need to know the difference between furry...and anthropomorphic. Robin Hood Disney movie is anthro, furry is guy in a suit made after Krystal from Star Fox.

I've been struggling with this when trying to make a species for my sci-fi comic, I have species with wet skin, dry skin, metal, rugged and that's fine but I made one that had fur on it and instantly "Cool furfag". There's a difference, I'm not interested in screwing the drawing.

Everyone I know is a furry if this the case. It feels like an inane label.

There's many different definitions of furry. One of the most common though is someone who has an interest in anthropomorphic characters. So maybe?

Okay, I found the particular user that sparked me to ask this question... http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/PatSilverFox

I don't want to single him out, so "PatSilverFox", if you're out there please don't take offense at my using your avatar as an example. It's just the least traumatizing way for me to get my point across. And if you do read this, maybe you have the answer to my question.
I do believe it is because they are trying to convey a human smile over a feline or canine muzzle and it doesn't quite fit right. I do agree that it can be unsettling at times.
Prolly this. Then again, most people don't do photorealism in drawings in general. You going to tell me this:

bears even a passing resemblance to

It's probably also easier to simplify a human face in to rough circles and circle segments acceptably than your typical canid.

Not exactly. Say you take a show that has anthros in it and replace them with people. Those who get upset about this are furries while the ones who couldn't care less are not. This isn't the perfect analogy but since I'm not particularly eloquent today it will have to do until someone else says it better.

You hit the nail on the head so hard a construction helmet wouldn't have saved him.

Yes and I agree, it is cute. Ironic that you mentioned the quote thing cuz I didn't get notified.

Anthropomorphic is when human properties are given to non-humans. Technically, Meatboy is anthropomorphic.

EDIT:
Shit, to not be interested in non-human characters would close me off from a great portion of games, books, and even mythologies. So, if having an interest in non-human characters makes me a furry, I'd have to be a bigot not to be.

Really? That's weird. Maybe I did something wrong when I snipped your comment. Oh shoot, maybe I also snipped his comment wrong too. I'd be giving etiquette lessons while breaking etiquette! Oh my that could be problematic.

Would you prefer that they were frowning?

I can't cite my source, but I remember learning in an old Psych class that seeing smiles makes you happier, and seeing frowns makes you sadder. Probably not the reason for choosing smiling avatars, at least consciously.

This prompts further investigation. Perhaps all avatars with human faces could be recorded, then compared to statistics regarding furry faces? Or we could just drop the issue completely and move on with our lives, but that would be SILLY, wouldn't it?

I wouldn't say all furry avatars have a smile. Yes, quite a few of them do, but I guess it is due to the people who drew them just like it that way. Mine for example he is fairly downtrodden.

Larger image of it because the avatar is tiny.

What I don't understand is why furries broadcast themselves so much.

After all it's just a fetish, not like my avatar is a chicks ass in a skirt.
