Hi fellow escapists,

I just deleted all my games and I mean everything. Why ? Because it was harming my school results and if I don't finish this study I'm kindly screwed with a 30000 euro bill I got to pay. So I guess thats incentive enough.
I went so far that I changed the password from my steam, origin and gamersgate accounts, lumped them together in a file (keepass archives are really handy) and made them unavailable for 4 years so even if I want to get back at gaming I have to do some serious work. and about my games collection of cd's and dvd's I am giving away. If I really want those games I could hit up Gog in 4 years and they propably will be up there :p

So what do you think,

Maybe you should do the same ?
You can live with your habit ?
Or am I stupid and this isn't a solution

Don't know if I keep hanging around here, something to do with locking it all out an such :p

If you feel that the only way to stop yourself gaming more than you should be doing is by not gaming at all, then that's the right choice. I'd never do it though for a few reasons:
- If something seriously needs doing, I won't just play games and leave it 'til the last minute
- Gaming really helps me calm down and have fun sometimes, and just makes me forget about any worries, and I'd say I work better after an hour of TF2 or LoL or something.
- It shouldn't be seen as a negative thing to game unless you do it religiously and bomb off important things to game, there's a social stigma to it that shouldn't be there and shouldn't affect your decision, just because you game doesn't mean you waste your time/are a sad recluse, don't let peoples opinion of it affect your decision.
-If you end up with spare time and just using it browsing facebook/watching TV, I'd say that's even less "creative" or "involving" than gaming (I'm not saying gaming is very creative, but at least it makes you use your head once in a while), why not just game once you have everything done for the day?

Just whatever works for you man.

I tend to ban myself for periods of time if I think it's gonna get in the way.

But as this guy says ^ - I don't really feel guilty for playing a game if it's time I'd usually spend not doing anything in. I barely watch television anymore (2 hours a week at most?) so that's probably freed up alotta time for everything else.

Yeah if alcoholism was an issue you'd be encouraged to get it out your house so it's understandable you went that route altho i think maybe a lil extreme. You need something to relax with and gaming can keep you sociable or just give you some escapism when things get tough.

Besides, you may well end up replacing it with something else, like forum posting :D

Even by my standards, that was an extreme move there.

Is it really that difficult to regulate your time and take care of what you need to do? I guess it could be for some people, but... I don't know. I got through school and University just fine despite my excessive gaming habits, so I never had to even consider a move like this.

If you procrastinate that badly, what makes you think you're safe without games? Personally, I've procrastinated so much as to skim sites (such as Escapist), watch videos, TV, movies, anything I could that didn't involve working. I'll even stare off into space if I've got nothing to do and don't want to work.

If the games were the only thing holding you back, more power to you. Personally, even without games, I find many ways to waste time.

I could have done the same, but it wouldn't fix the problem. I know video games have detracted from my studies. But cutting them out of my life would not have solved it, when I lacked the confidence in myself in the first place. For me, it's about getting a healthy balance.

My friend had to do this too. Personally, it boggles my mind. I don't get why you have to uninstall your games to not play them. The absolute lack of willpower blows my mind. I have all my games installed and if I can't play them...I just don't. I don't need to lock my computer in a safe I don't have the key to.

If that's what you need to do to be able to focus at school then more power to you for taking action. Good luck with your studies.

I could never do the same.

Pretty much this. I've been addicted to games before so I know how it can be a bit tough to deal with the desire to waste time on something rather than get important stuff done, but I always feel so bad if I let anything else get in the way of doing what I need to, I almost physically CANNOT waste my time gaming enough that it becomes a major problem.

Y'Know, you need some self control. What would happen if you will become addicted to alcohol? Ni, man. This just shows how weak you are. I hope you succeed in your studies.

Wait you had to do this in highschool????

If you're playing games so much it's harming your highschool grades then it's probably harming your health as well, perhaps it was a good decision for you.

I did something similar when I was in high school because my grades started slipping. The result is that I now have stress-induced depression because I essentially killed my one relaxation hobby that I had. So if you want to I won't stop you, but don't let yourself get overly stressed once you start focusing on your school work. Doing good in school is completely meaningless if you destroy your psyche to do it.

As harsh as this sounds, it's right. Learn some self control because if the answer to all your problems is to avoid them forever... it will fuck you up in the long run.

Thats an interesting solution. Personally if I feel like I'm neglecting my school work because of games I just give a majority of my games to friends and ask them to hold on to them for a while. Actually most of the games I don't regularly play are at friend's houses. It gives them a chance to play them (since we all share games we don't buy mulpitles of the same game) and keeps them away from me.

Edit: It may just be a greater need for self control on your part too. Gaming isn't my only hobby and if I had no hobbies at all I'd probably go insane. If I'm not gaming I'm reading and if I'm not reading I'm drawing or writing scenarios for our D&D games. Unless school is that much fun for you or unless you have an unearthly amount of self control you're going to need some sort of outlet.

Variety is the spice of life!

Eh, I just get things done and then I game when I have some free time, which is less and less all the time.

It's all about willpower, and personally I don't think uninstalling and getting rid of all your games is necessary, but if you think that's the right idea, more power to you.

Just wanted to say, you sound exactly like me when I was in school. I'd rather watch paint dry than do my homework. Of course, now I'm kicking myself over my stupidity.

As for the OP, whatever works for you. I would suggest that you slowly bring games back into your schedule, cause your going to have stressful situations all your life, and it'd suck to have to put your pasttime on hold in every stressful situation.

Maybe just install one game every month. That way it kind of forces you to do your work because if you play it too much you'll get burned out on it.
