You could say the same thing about Master Chief and Halo.
Or Freeman.
Or Thrall, or Arthas, or the Prince, or Garret, or Serious Sam, or Riddick, or mr. 47.

And so on and on and on and on and I don't think they've done anything wrong here.

Hmmm don't know, it is really hard to tell the difference between emo and punk, at least now-a-days.

I just don't like emo characters because the game designers never use for anything other than just injecting gloom and doom into the story line and to add "drama" in the form of dark close ups and brooding scenes. Black may go with everything but depression doesn't.

Although she doesn't seem to be all that emo, but I only taking a guess from what I saw in the demo. Still looks fun thought.

well, believe it or not it's actually quite hard to depict someone free running in a first person view in the form of an un animated banner.

the banner is trying to do nothing of the sort, especially considering the girl isen't that attractive.
Tastes aside, that's kind of the idea with Faith, she's supposed to be a realistic, relatively normal-looking character. Well, apart from the running gear, tattoo etc. It's weird to see how a lot of companies still think all their female characters have to appeal to sad, lonely nerds by making them look as unrealistic and unattainable as possible. I mean, this isn't the 90's, for shit's sake.

I don't understand. Does it annoy you that a hot japanese woman is flattering your browser with her presence? I sure don't.
Besides this is one of the few female videogame characters we have come across that doesn't have a rack the size of skippyballs.

To answer your question: I think they should, for the fans. Because these are the people that will want pretty art, and a nicely defined character to go with it. Plus, don't you guys love the tattoos as well?

It's all about marketing. The people who created this game and the people who sell this game work at 2 different places, in 2 different buildings, and came out of college studying 2 different things. Mirrors Edge is first person, and the promise of a deeper plot than most video games means that it is important to identify with the character in order to sympathize with them, making it important to know what the character looks like, however this is a philosophical reason. The real reason is that marketers know that sexy and ambiguously Asian women(I'm thinking Korean/Japanese maybe?) along with a bright color scheme will draw the eye in to their advertisement.

Also, the idea of a FPS where you never know what your character looks like is an interesting one. I wonder how that would affect how you thought about your character.

Ok first off that's highly stereotypical and offending to all ancient cultures who use heavy eyeliner in their traditional wear. I'm pretty sure it's customary for people like geisha's to have this kind of heavy eyeliner on, to accentuate the eyes. Are these people emo?

Or what about a more present day example. What if someone just likes to wear lots of eyeliner (ok if I see a guy seriously doing that I think it's a bit pathetic). But other than that are these people emo or do they just like to accentuate their facial features in other ways than you do? 'Cause I tell you it's damn sexy on most women I've seen.

*Ahem*, yes, well that was my rant-money.

I felt disattached to the characters.

...Although bioshock didn't do this
Emphasis is placed on Character appearance when said character actually HAS character, or a persona. You have to remember that you aren't YOU in this game, you're this character.

Games like Bioshock that don't do this don't do it because you are NOT a persona. Well, you are but you aren't. You're a nameless, faceless protagonist. With Mirror's Edge and Halo, you're more taking on a character's set persona.

Does that make sense?
Makes sense to me...

I've got girl friends that use eyeliner for parties and well they look sexy but they don't use eyeliner like the protagonist in mirror's edge do they? Because if your friends do then you should shun them, it's wrong but wouldn't you shun a emo?

If you wouldn't then you're a better person than me, I'll give you that. There's a big difference between some eyeliner and a mask of make up.
True, but I don't shun people who dress emo-like because they dress like that. I shun them after it's been made clear that they're whiny little attention seeking bitches.
Plus my haircut could be regarded as 'emo'; it's all black with a blood red streak and it covers up one of my eyes partially. Just out of curiosity would you shun me if I was in the same class/same office as you?
Yes Faith's eyeliner might be a bit more overdone than most women walking around but a. it's a game and b. it's a futuristic game, maybe it's the next big thing there. And even if it's not the devs have all the power and if they think it looks good on her it's not gonna change.

In my opinion, the decision to shape Faith like an actual athlete was a big step toward making a character that could appeal to both genders, rather than falling into another stereotype. That's a big selling point! Putting her on the advertisements shows you that even if you won't see it on the screen all the time, this is a game with a more realistic approach to characterization. (Unless the writing gets real schlocky.)

This may already have surfaced here, but a Kotaku post centered around an artist's rendition of Faith in a style that would appeal to the Japanese ideals of beauty. Here it is: Compare and contrast. [http://kotaku.com/5062933/faith-from-mirrors-edge-fan+designed-for-asian-tastes]

PS_For my money, an athletic build is just a different flavor of hotness.

Me too. It's just a shame Faith looks like a praying mantis.
