I don't notice many MTG players here on the Escapist. I'm sure you're out there!

I currently run a Red/Green deck based around making monsters hexproof and beefing them up, using red burn spells to keep the opponent from playing flyers (I only have weak monsters without flying in my deck.)

All but two of the monsters have a drop cost of 1 or two mana. The spells are mana givers like Land Grant or Lair Delve. Anything that can get me through the deck to my Planeswalker and the two besties, as well as my enchantments to make them hexproof.

When I get all three out, the game is basically over. My red beasty gets more powerful whenever a monster enters the field, my Green beasty gets twice as powerful every turn, and my Planeswalker can put at least 5 6/6 tokens on the field.

It's a pretty solid deck and hasn't lost yet, but my friends and I dwell on beating each others decks, so it should lose here in the next week or two. But so far it's my favorite.

So my question is, Escapist, what's your favorite color? What's your favorite deck? How often do you play? Any particular cards you love?

I have been passed Magic in my youth but I did not inhale.

A mate of mine has a hilarious green bury deck where you play stuff like boneyard worms and splinterfrights untill you have enough stuff in your graveyard to make all your creatures million/million trample OMFGBBQ. It's not as good as something like a reanimator deck that lets you play something like Kozilek, Destroyer of Truth on the second turn or something but it is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

I've got a few solid decks. I think my favorite one is my Myr deck. It put out tokens like crazy, then I drop a Coat of Arms. That one is followed by my Green/Black deck in which almost every creature has death touch. I protect the craetures and if I can't, I'll find a way to bring them back.

I've got an old white mirrodin deck built around equipment, and an eldrazi red/black/green deck built around a combination of highly expendable tokens and very powerful monsters, primarily using the former to get out the latter, or if need be simply sacrifice them for a fireball.

Heh. We exist, and we are a very varied many.

I started playing Magic during Unlimited/Revised and stopped around Visions/Weatherlight. Decided to sell off my stash of old cards about two months ago... only sold about half my dual lands, then got into playing again. Pre-release Return to Ravnica definitely got me sucked back in big time. Friday Night Magic beats going to the pub or becoming one with the sofa.

My favourite combinations are black/green, although I am still a bit struggling to properly integrate the latest Golgari tech into it, I must admit I am a bit underwhelmed. Dredge > Scavenge! Then again, I'm mostly toying around with other ideas at the moment, so I haven't fully explored 'new' Golgari yet.

My current favourite decks are

green/white non-Selesnya, all about turbo pumping out big bad ones, white only/mainly being there to counter, lock down and destroy/exile things I do not like and keep my more expensive killers alive and going strong... also, Sigarda, because Sigarda.

black/white non-Orzhov, it's the best nasty mindraep I could come up with without going blue. Love this one.

pure white weenie token deck that's basically the MtG equivalent of a Zerg rush. Lots of new cards from recent editions cycled in... oh, and I randomly got one Eldrazi Monument just the other day, which had to go in this deck. All your little guys get +1/+1, flying and indestructible. Yeah, I gotta sacrifice a creature every time it's my turn, but so far it only takes an average 2-4 moves by the time the Monument comes out before the enemy is very, very dead. Best of all, randomization does not seem to affect its effectiveness a bit. All I need is, say, three mana to start wreaking serious havoc, and even just one mana at the very beginning is plenty good enough. Behold the power of the weenies! Also, it can play a lot like a zombie deck, only in white. Love that bit.

Then there's a very experimental artifact-only deck with some Wrath of God, Armageddon, Balance, Storm Cauldron, Winter Orb, Vedalken Shackles and some more sure-fire gags built in. The sideboard is even more annoying. It's supposed to make the enemy go well bonkers, with me mostly relying on artifact mana and locking down the enemy in a fit of rage and despair. As it contains a lot of old/restricted/banned cards, it comes with a full box of 'sideboard' swappables. It's like LEGO, only more maddening.

FNM/Friday Night Magic made me meet people again that I haven't seen in, what, fifteen years or so. Gotta love Magic... and I do!

Two of my friends have quit magic and given me all of their cards.

So I am currently sitting at 22 decks:

- Mono-red Dragons
- Mono-Black Zombie
- Mono-Black Vampires
- Mono-White Myr
- Mono-Blue Mill
- Mono-White Human/Angel
- Mono-Green Ramp
- Mono-Green Infect
- Mono-Black Infect
- Mono-Red Artifact Burn
- Red-Green Eldrazi Ramp
- Red-Green Haste (lovingly named "Don't be hasty!" by my friend and its original creator)
- Blue-Black Zombie
- Blue-Black Ninja
- Green-White Aura
- Green-White Golem
- Basic Izzet
- Basic Golgari
- Esper Artifacts
- Jund. Just plain Jund.
- Khemba Equipment EDH
- Niv-Mizzet draw-power EDH

Variety is the spice of life, I suppose.

I am disappointed. I came here expecting what promised to be an entertaining discussion/debate/argument/motherfukin' flamewar on whether or not magic exists, but instead I get a civilized talk about the card game. Bwah.

I played alot during the Scars of Mirrodin block, but then the Twihard block came out and I lost interest - now M13 and Ravnica are out and all my cards are on the tail end of Standard and I just don't feel like paying $100 to get my decks in order or spend $50 dollars to custom buy a prebuilt deck.

I was into Magic years ago when I was like 9 or so (I'm 20 now). My mom's boyfriend gave me a huge box full of several copies of every first generation card. He taught me the rules and everything but he was the only other person I knew that played. When he was gone I didn't even think about it anymore. A couple years ago I thought of giving it another shot and went back for those cards. It turns out my mom sold them! I can't blame her, I never thought I would touch it again either, but she could've at least asked =(

Anywho, I watched a few friends play recently and I'm so used to the 1st generation cards. They had the new ones and there were so many status effects or whatever that I had no idea what they were! I'd still like to get into it but I'm dirt poor at the moment.

I initially thought that too but the capitalization of "Magic" was what tipped me off to the real topic right before I scrolled down.

Sound suspiciously like my myr deck. Lots of myr turbines, myrsmiths and other hilarious things like myr battleshpere? I can't believe how many tokens I can get and the fact I can make almost all of them 8/8 instead of 1/1

I also have a white red rage deck. Built around phyrexian mana usage. Get my rage extractors out then BAM summon my phyrexian mana cards and kill you instantly. I also have a bunch of means to heal myself via ajani pride mates so if I don't kill you with my rage extractors I'll have a few +abajillion/+abajillion

My buddy is easily the best magic player I know. His decks are pretty bad as and are a big challenge to beat most of the time. Hell I'm the only one who plays him anymore because he always wins. I bought him a reanimator deck and he threw the black preator so he summons it and we all have to sacrifice a creature every turn and he brings his back from his graveyard

I started out right as Seventh Edition got released I think, and then I stopped around Darksteel when I saw how stupid the Swords were. Got back in during Rize of the Eldrazi and have played pretty consistently with friends and in tournaments since then. (Even was able to get first a couple of times). I think my favorite color is green since two of my favorite decks have been my G/B Eldrazi Ramp and my Kessig deck. My favorite two decks are my Puresteel Paladin and Dredge decks that I made, Basilisk Collar and Mortarpod is a hilarious combo.

Also, Storm Crow is the best magic card ever printed. Ever.
[mtg_card= Storm Crow]

Edit: I also forgot the first time I did Niv-Mizzet and Curiosity combo. I also have a Doran EDH deck

I played from Eighth until Avacyn Restored, then just lost interest/no one to play with/was spending too much. My favourite colour has always been red but favourite deck is hard. I can't decide between two, a casual g/r Eldrazi deck or a mono red kuldotha rebirth deck I built for standard during zendikar/scars of mirrodin.

Just to remind you, guys there are forum codes for MtG cards

[mtg_card=Plains]

[mtg_card=Steppe Lynx]

Worth keeping the knowledge around. I haven't seen many people use this.

I'm pretty partial to any deck in which things turn sideways, causing my opponents to die. I also like combo decks with absurd premises, but it has to be really funny. I'm trying to run black/green zombies for standard (Lotleth Troll and Gravecrawler make me happy) and anything with Aether Vial for modern (fish, knights, regular white weenies, vampires... anything goes with Aether Vial!). I've got a Tempered Steel deck in there somewhere, too, but I like all of the illegal cards in it too much to make it modern-playable (I just can't say no to all-artifact-lands and Skull Clamps).

I only play casual (mostly 2+ people) magic, so my ability to converse with most Magic players is minimal.

I don't do normal tournaments, and if I spent more than $20 building a deck I figure I overpaid.

That said, between my wife and I we have >20 decks. Most aren't that good, largely because we always go for a theme when building decks. For example, I just finished a R/G werewolf deck and my wife finished a 5 color phasing deck.

We also have U/W Birds (actually kicks ass), 5 color Dragons, and U/B/W Creatureless Highlander.

We have a lot of fun, but its really hard to find people that play the same way we do.

I play exclusively with white and black, usually a white/black crossover deck heavy on clerics. They don't get a lot of facetime compared to goblins, elves and the other standard subtypes; however there used to be several multicolor creatures and enchantments that really brought out the white/black crossover deck's potential.

That being said, haven't played in a while; and haven't bought cards since onslaught and they switched the card face design not long after. Lucky to get in a game every couple months now, but still love playing.
