Hi guys, decided to sign up for the forums instead of just watching videos and stuff. My 360 was freezing last night, and I got the red rings today. I got a fair amount of games for it, and 3 controllers. My question is should I either send it in for repairs, get a new elite system, or sell the controllers and my games to put towards a PS3? The one thing I really like my xbox for is when me and my friends hang out we have some beer and play some four player split-screen online. I don't know if there are any games like that for the PS3 or not. Trying to decide on what to do, thanks. :)

inb4 "Get a PC."

If 4 player splitscreen is what you mainly use it for then you should stick with 360, a sPS3 doesn't do that.

PS3 is an all around better system though, with much better exclusives, but if your 360's still under warranty then just go for that.

EDIT: No warranty, huh? It'd probably be cheapest for you to have it repaired, so if money's an issue I'd go with that.

Repair, its free and it takes about 3 weeks, fairly painless process, you can survive without it, we believe in you.

Yeah, send it to Microsoft if it's still under warranty. They'll either fix it or give you a replacement if it's beyond hope. Of course, that doesn't mean the new unit won't do the same thing.

If it happens again I would recommend getting the newer S model. They're supposed to be much more reliable than the older units.

EDIT: Ninja'd by the OP

Since it's not under warranty, just get the S model.

get rid of it once you get it back for warranty ... they aren't worth the hassle.

use the money for another piece of electronic hardware ... one that doesn't fail as much

(i went thru 8 ... i hold a grudge)

Seriusly though, that sucks. Try to send it for repairs, or when the warranty is gone just hit it with a crowbar! That's sorta what I did >:)
*EDIT* MUST ... READ... OP!

Well, if your friends like littlebigplanet, go for the ps3. It's HILARIOUS to slap friends into deathpits.
If not, I recommend witing for the next gen, I heard rumors somewhere that is was incoming. If I am wrong, which is highly likable, buy another xbox( Mind the backwards compatability If you hav "old"xbox games"

Yeah I kind of want to just get it repaired, sell it and the games and controllers and get a Ps3 just because I don't want to risk it failing again. But I really do enjoy playing Halo Reach 4 player split-screen online when I have my friends over for some pizza and beer so it's a tough choice.

If the warranty is still valid, try that.

If the warranty is expired, smash it to pieces then buy a PS3 like many others before you.

If it's off warranty you could try fixing it yourself, that's what I did and the fix has lasted 2 years so far. It's really not very hard once you understand the reasons for the failure.

I'm pretty sure llama has how-tos for most of the common errors

You could always look for a guide on how to fix it.

But if you really can't live a few days without it, you can overheat it to work. (it's not recommended and bad for the xbox, but it works.)

This reminded me of this.

Regardless, it would be easier just to send it in and wait a while, than sell everything to a place like gamestop and then paying for the PS3.

Go the cheap way!

Do like the fake Russian guy did:

...unless of course it's under warranty.

Yeah RROD warranty used to be 6 years, now it's 3. Unless your system was bought around release date at 4 years you probably missed the window.

I've had 3 RROD's since release day, but i'm a videogame nerd and I couldn't survive without an Xbox for long.

If it was me i'd buy a new 1, it's 250 dollars which is a laughably little amount of money.

You could swap to a PS3 or just use your PC to game, but PS3 sucks and the PC can't splitscreen. I guess if you hate the PS3 less than me, and your friends hate it less than my friends, you could swap to that. It won't break on you, but you can't enjoy Halo or CoD or GOW with your friends on it (or XBL).

At this point in the game, PS3 and Xbox are on fairly even ground.

If you were asking "Which should I buy as my first next-gen console", I'd probably say PS3. But since you're already so invested in the Xbox, I don't really see any reason to change.

Upgrade to the Elite. From what I've heard (as a PS3 owner), it doesn't Red Ring like the older ones do.

Sell it on craigslist and use the money to buy a new one. My boyfriend sold 2 broken xboxs (one with red ring, one with E74) for $100 (together) without cables or controllers.
