Oh what? Ah yes, well, from what I read, there is nothing good about them, I don't think we have some in the States, but I always got my gold Broadsword, it likes souls, AND KIBBLE!
But but... gold is a terrible material for swords! Any true English blacksmith would know this!

One way or another, you got ripped off. I bet it was one of them pikey smiths...
No, its coated in gold, but its really sturdy iron underneath it, also, he said that you could light it on fire, since he rubbed a liquidated coal all over the blade, not sure if true, but its quite intimidating, also added a spike to the bottom of it recently, quite nice, actually.

I would say he's a more of a traditional gypsy like you pointed out, than the modern rude boi gypsy you get a lot these days.

Here's a picture of him (I'm sure he won't mind me posting a pic of him on here).

See...
OH, HE WAS THE MAN THAT TRIED TO DEACTIVATE MY CYBORG ROBO NINJAS, BUT THIS TIME I KNOW WHERE TO GET HIM!

BWAHAHA! *first impression joke*

Oh, so hes my objective, right, I'll suduce him as well as I seduced Elvist. *Second Impression!*

OH THERES MY FIANCEE! *Third Impression*

I think each one is funny.

what the shit? there really are gypsies? ive never seen one. that seems like the lamest predudice ever tho.
A prejudice concerning people parking their caravans on any open piece of grassland, squatting there fouling the place up with their illeducated abusive little shits they call children, stealing from the local area and paying no heed to the law?

That's not prejudice, that's common sense. Nobody wants to put up with a fieldful of arseholes.
They occasionally squat on several pieces of parkland near my house. All kinds of trouble.
ah. theives are a bummer. i get it. still. never met any, so i have no first hand experiance. i like to imagine they are in old fashioned covered wagons in torn up pilgrim clothes.
Oh, that'd be cool. We could have goat stew, they could teach me to play the accordion and I could have some filthy sex with some wanton harlot girls in those crocheted skirts with the jangly bits.

Alas, no such luck. Just piles of feculence.

The first stole my dads car in plain daylight, when we called the police they assaulted the policeman who sustained several bite wounds and then torched the car.
In america they would never get away with that. The SWAT team would be called out and an attitude adjustment would be administered. If you assualt a cop in the US and they have to call for backup, the backup is bringing an ass-kicking with them.
I'd rather they just make them go to sleep.

With ten thousand volts! Zzzzap! ZZZAP!
And then the unfortunate has a heart attack. God bless America, land of the free, home of the bravely armed.

Either my inside joke was so inside that it's too obscure or you just whooped my ass at inside jokes. I'm not sure which. >.>

I don't disagree that the term "Gypsy" is derogatory, I just think that they shouldn't be named after a nationality that they don't belong to.
They aren't. The "rom" in "Romani" (as in Gypsies) comes from a word in their own language, meaning "man." The "rom" in "Romanian" is related to the Latin word "Romanus," since the Romanian language is related to Latin. They are two different words from two different languages.

Also the word "gypsy" comes from the word "Egyptian," because people thought they were Egyptians. Which they aren't. Therefore gypsy is a much less appropriate word to be using, for the very reason you stated above.

I had no idea there were Irish Caravan people. Why have I never heard of or seen and Irish Caravan person? Is this for real? I really can't tell.

I once saw a show called "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding". Anyone who has seen it or has much experience with travelers in real life would probably agree that if they all drove their Winnebagos off a cliff, nothing of value would be lost.

However, here in America we would just call them homeless. Most of our crazy religions stay in one place and use their sweet tax exempt status to troll everyone.

Ah but they're not homeless. They have caravans.
Got some empty land? Caravan on it.

Some of the fuckers brick the caravans right onto the ground, build actual fucking houses. But they're still "travellers" 'cos they own a caravan. Takes the piss.

In Augusta, GA in the United States, the traveler women, including children and toddlers, all put on pounds of makeup and wear trashy clothes, ie uber tight clothes, cheetah print, 4 inch heels. The men are all basically dressed in a uniform of a colored plaid shirt and jeans with the same haircut. I've got nothing against them personally, but it sure is a strange, visually disturbing culture.

Around here they're notorious for going to the movie theater in droves and stealing things and attempting to seduce men, but I've never seen it, so I'm skeptical of those accusations.

Yep, that's what our local ones did. Gaudiest part of town, hands down.

I read that as "So...My sister is marrying a time traveller"

I had to reread it more than once, to read it properly.
Same, that's the only reason I clicked it. :p

You do know travellers =/= Romani, right?

Although that would be total bullshit either way. Trying being on the recieving end of robbery or assault and still giving a shit about history. Nothing justifies violence against innocent people.
Like the forced assimilation policy that England has had towards travellers since beginning the 80's at least?

I see, erasing a culture is not a crime i guess.

I read it as "a traveler," but I didn't realize that was an ethnic group in Europe; I thought he was talking about someone related to "The Traveler," that weird Timelord-like alien that kind of adopted Wesley Crusher towards the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Oh, on topic:

In the US, Gypsies are kind of a historical stereotype. About the only time you hear about them is if some period horror piece needs a fortune teller. I know on an academic level that they still exist in Europe, but I know next to nothing about them.

I have never thought about it until now, actually. I'm so used to being white-washed with western ideas, that I forgot that gypsies and the like still existed.

I think that kind of lifestyle can offer more educational benefits than of a rooted home. Not to mention, you learn from more than a couple of people on a daily basis. That is not to suggest that the traveler's lifestyle seems superior to me in every way -I mean, there has to be more health issues, right?

I think that you have every right to be concerned for your niece, and I also find it sweet. However, I think that gypsies have a different mentality than what we are used to collectively. I think that she will find a lot of support amongst those she is traveling with. I think this because they have all been in a compromising situation before. If it is one thing that nomads seem to be skilled with, it is adaption.

As long as she is surrounded by positive attitudes, I'm sure she will be just fine. She may even find a nice gypsy to marry.

When it comes to my family, I hope that a certain member of my family will take up this lifestyle. If only so they realize that they don't have it so bad.
