When they're used correctly cutscenes strengthen the story ie: war of the lions mass effect 2

When they aren't they serve as a disconnect from story and gsmeplay, Aerith's death; why you no work phonix down?

and this is bad thing why? game telling you a story you don't sit there doing nothing you watch story and information or just some cool stuff. Remember some people have DIFFERENT tastes than you, why would they be joking? i much rather spent 10-40% of game watching cutscenes than just playing game without them.
It's a bad thing because if you want non-interactive entertainment, there are books, movies, and (admittedly few) TV shows that tell MUCH better stories a far more effectively. Like the man said, "Movies are way better at being movies than games are at being movies." If Cloud Strife, Raiden (MGS), or Adam Jensen was a character in one of those media, they would get turned off/channel flipped/donated to the library before I even finished it.

i want balanced non-interactive and interactive that's why i love j-RPGs. and it's not a bad thing it's different.

I really like cutscenes (well made ones at least). I agree that cutscenes can be FAR too long, if they are short and to the point, I like them.

Funny, that's why I used to love them. Now, with the exception of a few stubborn holdouts (All my love, Persona team!) they all seem to be sinking into being bad Final Fantasy clones, who has done more to kill classic JRPG gaming than the combined hatred of every chest-high-wall-hugging, beer-soaked, Kratos-fellating fratboy. Even Mistwalker disappointed me. Blue Dragon was an awesome throwback to the old school (and the first game I ever bothered to go 1000/1000 on, and the only one now except for the Lego $FOO games. Strangely compelling, those.) Then they shat out
Lost Odyssey.

Once the world map disappeared, it was the beginning of the end.

for you maybe. i personally love pretty much all modern J-RPGs ar tonelico qoga, nis\if\compa stuff, FFXIII and especially love Lost Odyssey, ToV and Agarest. i don't give a damn about old stuff, i like new and look forwards not backwards.

See, that's just flame-baiting right there. Unfortunately, I'm apparently being mod-stalked lately so my like response will have to go unsaid. Enjoy your 40-hour hallways.

yep i will except they are not hallways that are beautifully made and realised stories characters fight mechanics and worlds. only flame-baiting is you, don't like new J-RPGs? deal with it and stop complaining they are not for you.

Their episodes have been really off lately, especially their one about game "compulsion". There's evidence that playing some games will cause a release of dopamine, which has proven to be addictive with a whole range of other activities (eating, cocaine), so why should games be the exception?

And there's nothing wrong with cutscenes if they're done well. I've yet to see an absolutely atrocious one, or one that bored me.
