Don't feel so bad, not your fault. I usually cross the street if I see workers too on the sidewalk (I'm a guy), but mainly because I don't want to get underfoot if they're continuously getting stuff from the van.

As for the fights, I can relate. I haven't grown much if at all since elementary/ early high school and I've stood well over 6 ft for a large portion of the life. People almost always assumed I was good at fight and as such I've never had to throw a real punch in my life.

A vast majority of rape stems from women being retarded (Like getting way too wasted at a bar/club) and not the "Scary man from nowhere stealing you off!"

So no, your excuse is wrong.
Ah yes, of course, it's the woman's fault, she forced the man jump her and abuse her... [/sarcasm]
You're right about it not being the scary man from nowhere though, it's usually someone you know who'll become the rapists, which is...kind of weird, to be frank.

Really? I'm a girl and I usually just smile at builders when I walk by, as I do with anyone whose eyes I happen to meet. Usually the actual construction site is fenced off so walking by is rarely a safety hazard. I would see no reason to cross the road unless the whole footpath was blocked. Presuming you're not just being extremely paranoid, what you're saying is pretty damn insane. Where on earth do you live? I wouldn't expect to see such classism anywhere other than Victorian England.

After reading the responses on here, I think women thinking you'll rape them is fairly uncommon. It's unfair that people think of you like that based on your profession, though.

Metal heads? As in people who listen to metal?

Some people are just stupid irrational morons..mistrust and judgement takes the place of logic and decency. That said, I would bet most people are totally absorbed in their own matters, barely taking notice of you guys.

That's weird... The only reason i would cross a street to avoid a construction site, it would not be because of the workers, but because i feared to have something fall of on my head... Have heard horror stories about construction worker, but none concerned rape, it was more about intimidation from syndicate members...

Strange man, probably strong from his line of work, knows the place inside and out, has a perfectly legitimate reason to be in the environment handling equipment unfamiliar to the general public?

And that's without the group acts of sexual objectification towards women that comes with the builder stereotype.

I'm sorry things are this way, and I'm very sorry that its worse when you're dressed for your job, but please, bear with us women. We don't like it, either.
Sometimes that paranoia goes to far, my friend tried to ask some lady for directions on the street, in broad daylight, and she pepper sprayed him

Try tucking your penis back into your trousers then, you pervert!

[sub]And it sounds like you're imagining things somewhat. Or maybe they're crossing to avoid dirt/dust/whatever.[/sub]

You could have phrased that better. As in, "a vast majority of rape stems from incidents where women are drunk and easier for people to take advantage of, not when everyone's sober in broad daylight in the middle of the day."

Demonising victims is rather ridiculous.

(Girl here.) Considering my step-dad and one of my best friends are both builders, I am unsurprisingly not under the impression that builders are rapists.

But I don't think it's that so much about women thinking builder = rapist, we're told to be uber careful around strange men when we're alone and to take precautions to make ourselves less vulnerable, and when you have these messages thrown at you all the time it's hard not to feel edgy.

I mean, I try really hard not to cross the street when I see a young male in a hoodie walking towards me but I still take a huge breath of relief when he passes and (of course) doesn't try to mug me.

Most people would rather just act on their paranoia and risk offending people who're 99.9% likely to be nice guys than have to fight through the panic because there are a group of strong men with tools/blunt weapons who could pull you into a construction site and have their way with you and there would be no passers by to help you...

Yeah, but mainly the really HC metal fans which wear all dark leather with long black hair, piercings etc.
I mean I look like a pretty young nice guy but when I tell people I listen to metal they get all kidns of ideas about me and immediatelly take a little distance.

It's just an automatic assumption that a guy with a tool belt is some kind of uneducated, crass, beer-swilling caveman. It goes even double if you're knocking down walls or tearing out plaster. They see the dust and the work gloves and just get creeped out.
(creeped gets spell-checked?)
If you notice these people giving you some space, maybe find a fun way to mess with them. Just be all smiley and friendly, wave and call out "HII-iiii!" almost like a little kid.

I understand that. People where I live are more used to metal, and a lot of people even listen to it as well, but there are still those people that can't understand how I listen to it. I also get plenty of "You do!? You don't look like you listen to it."

Yeah, and you'd wonder since I live in Finland which is kind of "home of metal" and that shit (discrimination) excists here also.
I don't want to know how people get treated in areas were metal is more uncommon.

I don't like to think it's that bad, because I don't treat people who listen to music I don't like badly or unfairly. But then again, people can be people. The only thing I really have to go on is the Heavy Metal in Baghdad documentary.

Another good one is "A headbangers journey" really good documentation from a young university student doing is final work.

You're much much much much MUCH more likely to get raped by someone you know than by someone you don't know. Just throwing that out there.

OP: I cross the street when I see construction sites or stuff like that for two reasons:

1. I don't like walking near construction sites. I tend to be rather clumsy, and it makes me nervous.
2. I don't want to get in the workers' way. You guys have really taxing jobs, and you guys deserve to not have people get in your way when you're working.

That's just me, however. :p

Well. As a woman, I'll just say that I love a good working man in his work clothes. There's not much sexier than a man in a work shirt, jeans and work boots, constructing a building or doing some other maintenance-related project. And he doesn't have to be some impossibly cut Old Spice Guy, either. I just like to watch men work.

That said, you are still sort of a stranger to people, one with a purpose in the area but still a limited exposure to the people who live there on a regular basis. And Hollywood has done a good job of making it seem like every electrician or cable repair guy is actually some thief in disguise scoping out your property for weak points.

Or, as others have said, they might not want to get in the way of your work. I'll usually leave the room/area a maintenance man is in when he comes over to respond to one of my repair requests, because I don't want to seem rude, nosy or like I don't trust them.
