Did you see "The Simpsons Guy" yet? Did you like it? Did you dislike it? Or did you maybe find it good but not great? What do you wish they'd have done? What do you wish they hadn't done?

I liked how they, like, used the beer companies as a metaphor for the different shows. It was, like, so clever and stuff!!!

It was really no different than watching a new episode of Family Guy and a new episode of The Simpsons back to back. That is to say not particularly funny and goes on for far too long.

I thought it was interesting.

They smoothly changed the animation from Family Guy to The Simpsons, answered my question of the skin color problem with one sentence and made a reference (or two) to the "Where the heck is Springfield?" question.

I loved how Meg and Stewie freaked out Lisa and Bart.

But I pitied the crooks who got involved in the car wash and I thought the chicken fight was a bit over the top and I felt sorry for the people and places that got involved in it (but it gave a very funny look back to Springfield Gorge).

But it was an interesting way to mix the two shows together and can't wait to see how they do The Simpsons/Futurama crossover.

Mixed feelings. It was definitely more of a Family Guy episode than a Simpsons one, with most of the gags being from the former (ridiculously gory drawn-out fight scene that goes on way too long, random cutaway gags, etc.), with Springfield doing an extended cameo. The second half felt like some kind of attempt to 'resolve' longstanding arguments about which one is better, which as they sort of admitted with the 'stupid arguments on the Internet' comment at the start, can't really be done.

I liked the carwash scene and the fighter plane cutaway though, as well as the Fred Flintstone cameo recognizing that they are both technically 'copies'. I liked 'A Star is Burns/Man Getting Hit By Football' more back in the day, but again that was more of a Simpsons episode which happened to have Jay Sherman as a starring guest. Ah, poor Jay Sherman... You'd have so much new material to work with now.

It was alright. I'm glad it was the Family Guy team that was writing crossover, since they have a level of self-awareness that this thing needed to work. I'm not as down on modern Simpsons as most people are, but self-awareness is something it tragically lacks these days.

I enjoyed the Bob's Burgers/The Cleveland Show riff, just a shame it was spoiled in the trailers. Most of the pairings between characters were pretty good; more could have been done with Lisa/Meg & Marge/Lois, but the little bits were funny enough. Stewie's interactions with Bart were great, and played nicely on the juxtaposition between his and Bart's levels of malice. The comparison to Dennis the Menace at the beginning of the episode set that up nicely.

The crown jewel of the episode for me was the courtroom scene. Seeing two James Woods', Quimby and West and Carl and Cleveland interacting was funny enough, but then they hit you with Fred Flinstone and I almost split my sides. I'm glad they kept that out of the trailers, since it's such a great gotcha moment. It almost makes me glad that Harry Shearer piked out, since they probably wouldn't have done that if they'd been able to just use Judge Schneider. That said, I still think they suffered not being able to use nearly a third of the cast.

Finally, as much as I enjoy a good chicken fight (I'm a man of simple tastes), I really wish they'd ended with falling down the gorge. It had already gone on long enough, but that last section was too brutal and actually made me uncomfortable. Maybe it's because I grew up with the Simpsons, but seeing Peter come inches close to shoving a spike in Homer's throat was bizarrely confronting to me. It's the sort of thing that would make me cry and cover my eyes if I was watching it as a kid. I have no empathy for Peter, and that sort of thing suits him and his world, but seeing it happen to Homer feels like watching Bugs Bunny get realistically murdered. It's just not right.

It was way to "Family Guy" for my liking. I'm so over Seth MacFarlane'MacFarlane's "overt sexist is funny" shtick. It also felt more like a greatest hits rehash of both franchises, rather than seeing. Something new, or even that interesting.

TL; DR
Missed opportunity.

Well, it certainly made me appreciate The Simpsons writing more seeing the two actually put side by side. Altogether it was a match made in hell and I probably would have been better off not watching it with my friend. Could have used that time for Pokemon. Or University homework... Nah, who am I kidding, Pokemon.

The best part was obviously when H. Jon Benjamin showed up voicing Bob from Bob's burgers.

The joke being that Family Guy and The Simpsons have to 'carry' Bob's burgers because its not getting the ratings, when in my opinion Bob's burgers is far beyond either of the other two.

I didn't watch it. I hate Family Guy. Just can't stand it. Brian and Stewie are good, but the general writing of that show just... hurts.

I agree with Kingjackl, I was rooting for Homer at the end, nobody beats up Homer Simpson, especially not a second-rate copy. It did make me uncomfortable to see that violence, which is really strange being me.

I really liked the crack at Bobs Burgers and The Cleveland Show, but I felt the character arcs were out of place and went nowhere. And the prank call bit wasn't even a joke. I mean, Barts was, and how Moe kept phrasing it was hilarious, but then Stewie just shows Seth Macfarlane trying to push the boundaries not realizing it wasn't funny to begin with. Plus seeing Nelson in that ball gag was just weird.

I would have liked to see more of the blossoming of Homer and Peter's friendship, and maybe a perspective with The Simpson's writers at the helm. I think I'm biased (because I also noticed Peter got more punches in than Homer did) but I came out of the episode thinking it wasn't great. It wasn't good either, but it was OK bordering the range of bad.

It was a "meh" show for me. I was reading a book the whole time & still didn't miss anything, all of the actual funny parts have already been mentioned. I guess I'm just over the Family Guy thing, it was funny for awhile, but got old very quickly. And the chicken fight just doesn't work without the chicken.

The Simpsons premiere wasn't really any better though, I was seriously hoping they would kill Krusty. Never liked that clown.

I watched it and really, the only thing I took away from it was "Meh, it was ok I suppose". The main gags had already been spoiled in the build up so beyond those there wasn't really anything of major note.

The whole thing with Brian/Chris and Santa's Little Helper was a story that never really went anywhere and just seemed tacked on to give both FG characters something to do while the others all paired off. In fact, tacked on is probably the wrong way to describe it. Rushed would be a better choice as pretty much everything in the show was Peter/Homer-centric with the other characters getting a line or two but never really getting their own bit of narrative to do something with.

All in all, I think it was a missed opportunity.

It was amusing seeing both shows making fun of each other and it was overall a better episode than what both of these shows have shown lately.

Re: the Bob's Burgers gag: It's never a good idea to try making fun of a show that's leagues better than your own.

Best part of both shows last night was that Don Hertzfeldt couch gag,

It's an interesting insight, but there's no getting around the fact that the quality of the writing has deteriorated dramatically since the series heyday, and the show has probably outstayed its welcome for at least a decade now, if not longer. Every show has a shelf life, even an extremely flexible one like The Simpsons. Many if not most peak creatively in their 2nd-4th seasons and begin a long, steady decline thereafter.

Subjective opinions and all that. Personally I HATE Bob's Burgers. The humor is flat, the animation is awful, and worst of all it's just plain BORING.
I'll have to agree with you. I gave it many chances but its just not my style. And ratings tend to back my opinion up as the majority. Sorry Bob's lovers, but its true its damn true.

OT: Overall I thought it was the best they could have done with the material. It highlights just how little Marge and Lois offer their respective shows as characters by hardly addressing them at all (and thereby showing the weakness of female representation in said shows) and shows the apples-oranges comparison of the two shows (they really are different even if they are "copies" of each other somewhat thematically). Separately speaking I enjoy both shows because of how different they are in tone, though on this site I apparently am one of the few who still think both shows have some life left in them.
It was never going to be perfect, it didn't need to be. It just needed to showcase the difference in style and content while keeping it light. I also enjoyed the chicken fight, just because I have always wanted to see that particular vs. match.
