Well seeing as how my only exposure to the original Final Fantasy 7 stemmed from watching Vinny from Vinesauce play it I don't really have much of a history with the combat system?

Idk man, that trailer looked pretty damn good in my opinion, and the music for it sounds amazing. My only real caution is the company behind it. Squeenix of a decade ago isn't the same Squeenix of today. And you know how they are- they ALWAYS mange to colossally fuck up everything they do.

But, if they nail this, than damn. They did it justice. Again, though I don't have the nostalgia factor and hands on experience with the combat system. So maybe I'm just being fooled by the graphics.

Afraid I'm one of the ones who hates how it looks.

I love turn based combat systems, and think FF7's music & dramatic camera action during combat were a massive part of making it so absorbing.

Add to that the fantastic music overall, and wonderful atmosphere, and there's absolutely none of the above in this vid leaving me very disapointed.

Was really looking forward to it, but I expect tp be very disapointed now.

Here's the gameplay trailer in case anyone's interested:
Well, I was, until I saw it.

Are we sure this isn't a parody?
This.

That looks terrible. There is no way they are going to be able to tell the whole story like that. This just went from a day 1 purchase to a , wait for reviews and maybe pick it up after the fanboy hype dies .
Define "like that", because the storytelling bits look pretty much exactly like any game's story bits.

That's what i meant. The game is just too big to make it into action RPG.

Not super happy about the new combat system, I'd prefer to keep the old ATB system in place, but I guess they HAVE to make it more modern.

I'm gonna buy it regardless.
That's the problem though. The Final Fantasy series has been stagnant ever since they got rid of ATB. If they wanna mix it up a little, fine, but they really need to bring back ATB. It's the battle system that carried the series through three, THREE console generations. Then they canned it for an admittedly-decent battle system in FFX (I liked the tactics of considering moves based on how much they'd effect future turns), and outside of that the series has been nothing to really talk about.

For all the experimenting they did with each Final Fantasy, we could always rely on the core gameplay being there. Getting rid of ATB is like a Mario platformer without the Super Mushroom; like Metroid without collecting power-ups; like Zelda without tons of tools and gadgets; like Donkey Kong without- damn... I really am a Nintendo kid, aren't I? Okay, a non-Nintendo franchise... I can do this. Um... Like Legacy of Kain without awesome time-twisty grimdark storytelling[footnote]Nosgoth, anyone?[/footnote]. Boom.

*Ahem* In short, I feel that making the remake into an Action/RPG is the worst thing they could have done with the game. They should have used this as an opportunity to bring ATB screaming back into action to remind us all of why we loved the Final Fantasy series in the first place.
I don't want to make this weird but I need to say that I love you right now.

You're bang on with literally everything here. I mean did everyone suddenly forget how weak the combat systems in FFXII and FFXIII were? And those were a direct result of trying to make it more action-y.

Frankly I feel FFX was actually a solid step in a good direction. A bit different but similar enough to ATB that it didn't jump the shark. It simplified the 'wait for bar to fill' thing and instead changed it to a clear action progression (which is what ATB effectively was, but without being as visually clear). But honestly, changing the FF7 battle system was the single thing I was most worried about them doing because they just CAN'T make a good battle system anymore and...well it looks like they gone and done it.

My enthusiasm has been... significantly lessened by this. Not only by the battle system, but the super-serious seeming Barrett.

I'll still end up buying it, for atmosphere and plot primarily, though they could quite easily mess that up if they end up focusing it all on Genesis Rhapsodos and other such silliness.
I don't care that he is serious, replaying FF7 (original) recently, at the start of the game was serious and angry pretty much the entire time until you leave Midgar, so its within character.

I just hate those stupid fucking sunglasses.

I don't really see how breaking it up into separate parts is all that different from breaking it up into separate discs. It's not like any Final Fantasy has ever been the kind of thing that you can blow through in a single sitting anyway; maybe a weekend if you really marathon through it. My point being that taking breaks in the story has always been mandatory. Long as they don't wait longer than a month or so between releases. Also, they probably would have had to break-up the game into parts even if they stuck with the original combat system.

Or they could use, I don't know, any other turn based combat system? Final Fantasy some of the most slow and dull turn based combat I've ever encountered, and that includes Pokemon. Etrian Odyssey, Bravely Default, Persona, even Dragon Quest, which is as vanilla as you get, have more depth and less bloat.

meh. it looks ok. You still couldn't pay me to play it. I am kinda glad it's finally getting remade though, if only so I don't have to listen to fans begging for it to be.
