So, there was a shooting at the school I flunked out of.

An armored vehicle stopped outside the University of Alberta "HUB Mall", carrying the money used to stock the ATMs.

Few details are released, but police are searching for suspects in the shooting of four people, three dead and one in critical condition at the University hospital.

The shootings happened around midnight.

"Well, at least the shootings happened late at night when the mall was closed, so no one except the armored vehicle staff were around," you may say. But that's the thing: HUB Mall is a really cool building that has a reeeeeeeally long row of stores on either side - with STUDENT RESIDENCES lining the sides on the upper levels, with several student lounges.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r1yU9kRvdZU/TsPoLgjeVLI/AAAAAAAAD10/Z079_mAcJ-4/s1600/HUB.jpg

That's the upper levels - there's a bunch of design workshops on the lower level of the mall.

So hundreds of students heard the shootings, and many students doing crunchtime in the workshops were rushed out of the building while the students in their homes were told to stay in their rooms. They're allowed to leave now, but can't go back in.

I'm told that the area around HUB Mall is nearly dead - the few who are there are silent and in shock. The entire University is reeling.

Now here's the part that scares me: My favorite spot in the entire university is "Skyview Lounge", an over-the-path suspended lounge that offers a lovely view out over the rest of the campus through a wall window.

Right there, through the window just over the pedway.

So, had I done better on one final, I would have had a summer class to make up for some classes I was doing badly in (I flunked out by a minimal margin). And since me not doing too well in school is a sticking point at home, I would have stuck around at Uni as much as possible (I did that before I flunked). Thus, it's frighteningly likely I could have been IN THE HUB ATRIUM WHEN THE SHOOTINGS HAPPENED. If I was sitting in the right chair, I would have watched them happen (albeit from a distance).

The U of A seemed like one of the safest campuses, having lots of security and a high student density. It's scary as hell to have that shattered, considering that I'm considering going back at some point.

For discussion, what's the worst thing that's happened at your school, and where were you at the time?

University of Guelph.

Worst thing that happened last school year were two sexual assaults near the campus grounds. Apart from that, just the normal damage done by drunks.

Not sure if it counts, but one man was shot by the police right outside my school during the '01 riots. But this was a year before I started attending it and it wasn't strickly -at- my school, more like outside the door. Although after the two shootings in Finland, we did get a few safety routines to follow, like locking the classroom door and a few random fire drills. But nothing bad really happened to a school I've been, or "should" have been, attending.

The closest thing to "worst" happening at my school was a fire drill that got a bit out of hand and, allegedly, some stranger trying to take pictures of my friends. I was in primary school, and I must've been about 8, 9 or 10.

Someone was threatened by a knife at my school, and I was in the worst possible place to witness such an incident from.

On the sharp side of said knife.

Although, somebody was actually murdered from my school, most likely by someone from my school, but that was outside the school in the early hours of the morning. And then there was the time someone was threatening to jump off a second floor balcony. Still, I'm betting I feel quite a bit luckier than the OP does.

My school had a few suicides and countless muggings over my four years. Not a great record, but could be worse.

No one can really compete with Virginia Tech though. Aside from the big Seung Hui Cho shooting, they a couple people be murdered every year for the past couple years. They had one girl who got killed at a Metallica concert, a couple students who were murdered on a camping trip, and one girl who was literally beheaded in the food court. Something is wrong with that place

It was an exchange student who was having lunch with a guy who was from the same part of China as her. I think he wanted to have a romantic relationship, and she said no, so he pulled a knife from somewhere and cut her head off. It's pretty messed up.

I actually worked with the "possible" murder, Travis, in Sept/Oct. He was a pretty cool guy then, but had to quit to take care of his mom who has cancer.

Needless to say, the news shocked me.

Shit man, I gotta be honest with you.
I posted a long time ago that a shooting occured to me IN FRONT OF MY RESIDENCE.
Now, this is normal since I live in a third world country, with the 3rd highest murder rate in the americas.
I'm writing this, because I don't want you to be scared, I want you to live your life... and because I'm a little drunk and I'm too lovely and familiar when I'm drunk.

So brother (Sorry), just because a shooting happened right in front of your nose doesn't mean you have to forfeit yourself of going out.

To be on topic, well... I've been beaten up into a bloody mess just for a cellphone and some spare change. I tell you, things are fucked up down here, I don't wish this on anybody and you guys should be thankful of having a good (although sometimes, military state) police to keep you out of harm.

A car once blew up right outside of my school. I could see the smoke and smell the fire.
T'was some underworld mafia stuff or some shit like that. Not an accident, but a bomb.
Schillerska, by any chance? Sounds very familiar. Well, suppose it's slightly better that they bomb each other's car rather than someone who actually matters...

Some random guy came into reception with a hockey stick and started smashing up all the glass doors and threatening to kill himself with the shards. No-one got hurt though, so it all ended out ok.

Some guy with a knife was shouting about killing people and waving a knife around a few weeks back at my TAFE, though I ddin't see it myself.

Oddly, he'd just been picked up and let go again by the police (who are about 60m down the road) for something else.

A Japanese kid killed himself by leaping off the roof of a 3 storey building at my old school. I saw the body briefly, and I knew the guy aswell. Not too pleasant.
I also saw a guy die in town once, he got hit by a car and landed on his head. It's ridiculous how much blood comes out of your head...

Worst thing would have to be when I was in fourth grade and someone got beaten up with a crowbar.

Very little things have happened at any of my schools. One teacher got cut with a knife (from the sound of it it was just a slight scratch on the arm) and someone I know got his face smashed in (with just a single punch, not like a crowbar or anything) and was hospitalised for a while.
Oh, and somebody was supposedly attacked with a claw hammer nearby.
