Didn't watch much of it. Brave winning best animated film kind of threw me off though. I enjoyed it but it was a pretty mediocre movie by Pixar standards.

And while I thought the McFarlane bit was unfunny myself (BOOBS HAHA.. no), I am enjoying the shitstorm it's brewing. Surprised I haven't seen a thread on here yet about it saying how sexist it was *eye roll*

I liked it.

Seth was hardly the worst host ever and I laughed throughout the pre show, especially when Kirk appeared. I didn't see enough of the movies nominated to really care who won and I've seen enough oscars to know that the movies I did watch and enjoyed wouldn't be nominated for anything other than costume or effects. The comedy remained strong and Seth knew how to needle at the audience without going over the line. Was a lot better than the Oscars that were hosted by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.

1) I liked Seth McFarlane as a host, even though he always cares to make jokes offensive before making them actually funny. Also I felt a bit of a disconnect between his gig and the whole "let's honor James Bond" motif, which wasn't that much of a motif to talk about. I agree a single host is way better than a duo. From Franco-Hathaway to something like a sure bet with Martin-Baldwin, these always are lacking freshness and spontaneity.

2) What the hell is it about Life of Pi? It's such a fucking CGI-fest I wonder how it won anything beyond Visual Effects. Aren't you supposed to actually INVOLVE cinematography to win Best Cinematography? Movies made in a computer should be locked away from the category. Also - Best Director? Same deal. I'd give a badge to all the minions slaving at CGI.

3) Waltz winning again so soon and for such a similar character was very surprising but I'm OK with it. Day Lewis was the obvious choice and I agree on the award but I'm always a bit weary when an actor hogs Best Actor whenever he so much as shows up onscreen (kind of like what Meryl does). Regarding Best Actresses... all very meh. Best Actress going to the lead's love interest? Is this really the best performance by a woman in the whole of 2012?

4) Would the Academy really cut off the Best Movie recipients' speech, and did Ben really need to speed up the way he did? Cutting off the DP's speech, sure, but Best Movie? Nobody's gonna rush you man. And yeah, I'll be a bore and join the chorus of people chirping about Ben not getting nominated for Director.

5) Disappointed at Haneke's win. Not because he didn't deserve it, but because he was so blasé about it. I half-expected him to slash his own throat or throw his award or at least be mordant about the whole affair but nope, just a dude thanking God and his wife. Again.

6) I'd just like to point out the two movies that will be remembered the most are Argo and Django (both of which won best screenplays!), then Lincoln (if only because Spielberg directed it) and Pi (because of Best Director/Photo/FX/whatever). Everything else was there either as a stunt or as a sympathy vote (Beasts of the Southern Wild and Silver Linings Playbook above all).

7) MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT - the hell is the First Lady doing at the Oscars? Just what the hell, people. By setting her up there you're politizising the whole thing! And this is about movies, not politics! (on a minor note, why're you going to get Jack Nicholson onstage if he's just going to step aside for the chick in the screen?)

I learnd to give up on award shows. It's not judged by quality, it's just who gave the most bribes and put the most award bait in their work. Really, the comedy critics like Yhatzee and Todd in the Shadows are the only people who's awards I actually listen to, because they're stating their actual opinions, not what people with money want them to say, and even then I don't agree with them %100.

They always suck.
They will continue to suck until they acknowledge that action and comedy are things, and there are genres outside of historical films, and serious dramas.

Or is Pixar just the default winner now no matter they make?
Yeah, that's what I meant. Not my personal pick, but the one I figured would win.

It had a screenplay nomination.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who disliked that. The First Lady has no place presenting awards at the Oscars. It's a place for movies, not politics.

Pixar winning wasn't a surprise. I haven't seen Brave, but Pixar seems to always be a shoe in for best animated film.

Life of Pi winning Best Director and Argo winning best film caught me a bit off guard. I personally haven't seen that happen before (director award and best picture award going to different films)

Anne Hathaway winning best supporting actress. WHAT A SHOCK!!!! Same goes for Day-Lewis.

I'm personally a bit bummed that the Hobbit didn't win anything, but that's just the Tolkien geek in me speaking.

All in all, it wasn't a real stellar awards show. McFarlane's jokes about the length of the Oscars got old, and I'm not a big fan of his work either. He was better than the Baldwin/ Martin duo a few years back, though.

I wouldn't say they sucked, I would just say it wasn't surprising.

Christoph Waltz and Tommy Lee Jones were in too much of a dead heat for me to even think about.
I was glad that category was first so I wasn't biting my nails the whole time.
Oh, and I also wanted Sam Jackson to win via write in, but alas. no.

I wasn't expecting Jennifer Lawrence to win over Jessica Chastain. I'm pretty sure there was some forced hands in the voting pool there, An actual good actress gets popular with teenagers. Fucking Unprecedented! She must be doing something right.

Do I have to say it?
You're going to make me say it...
I wanted Bradly Cooper to win over Daniel Day Lewis.
I knew it wasn't going to happen, I just wanted it to...
Stop looking at me like that!

Other than that everything went exactly as I thought it would.

Seth MacFarlane was funny and him singing with Kristin Chenoweth was amazing at the end.

4) I still can't believe Cloud Atlas didn't get a nomination in ANYTHING.
This. Not even for best makeup(which it should have been a shoe in for). The people who do the Oscars have the same type of entertainment as a baby having keys jingled in front of them. With the keys being a movie about WW2/ethnicity/cancer.

I'm a pure Golden Globes man now.

I actually had more issues with nominations/snubs for the Globes than the Oscars this year. XP

But I do think it's just as relevant as the Oscars on a year-to-year basis.

True, but 2009 Oscars. They will never recover from that. And Cloud Atlas did get nominated in the GG.

1) Brave winning animated feature was entirely on hype. It wasn't as good as ParaNorman and certainly not as good as Wreck-It Ralph.
.
really?

I havnt seen brave but I think i'd have to agree in that they just figure "well PIXAR wins every year so y'know easy award" it does go to show though that the animated catagory might not be as much of a "ghetto" anymore (do they still have the rule that animated features cant run with the big boys? or was that never an actual rule?)

1) Waltz winning is the big upset of the night. I guess they really like his Basterds character. Means he'll win again in another couple of years, when Tarantino does his next film and casts him in the same type of role again
.
best actor? well he was pretty good...not best actor good but that is surprising
i know it is an unwritten kind of rule when it comes to animation....but as i recall Beauty and the Beast was actually nominated for best picture....that being the only instance of running with the "big boys" so to speak.

Up and Toy Story 3 were also both nominated for Best Picture. This might be different from Beauty and the Beast, though, as the number of Best Picture nominations were increased since then.

Wait, Cloud Atlas wasn't even nominated for anything?
Who's making the Oscars?

And Brave was a nice movie, but certainly not Pixar's best.

A lot of Middle Eastern Awards ceremonies are hosted by the mayor of the host city. At awards city council and other local politicians are present as well. It's not about politics for them. Parts of the Middle East have a love for Cinema that surpasses the Western World in a lot of ways.

With that said, I highly doubt that Michelle Obama being there can really count as "politicizing the event". For one, she didn't even say anything about politics. It's not like there was a political agenda being pushed by herself of the Oscar's awards show.

uhm...tell me again why there even IS such a thing as Oscars? is our life SO boring and dim that we need to waste millions of dollars on voting what movie was the best this year? where's the ecological science awards? or the medical awards? wheres the technology awards?

The Oscars are basically NASCAR but with movies. both are a severe waste of time, money and resources.

Rant Over.

there i feel much better now

Personally, never had any interest in the Oscars. The movies/people winning rarely fit the ones I enjoyed. Just a matter of taste, but the Oscars always seem like the 'safe bet' to me. Then again, the same thing can be said about practically every major award. Makes paying attention to them a bit pointless to me. As I said, just a matter of taste.

The moment I saw that The Master wasn't nominated for best picture (or PTA for director), I ragequit the entire thing. The fact that neither Phoenix or Hoffman won was an insult as well.

The fact that Pixar won with Brave over the great Paranorman and Pirates shows how bad peoples view of western animation has gotten. I haven't seen a big budget, true animated film in years it's all CGI now and I cannot stand CGI.
