Okay, so here's a question to mull over during the weekend.

If you had a friend who had never played a videogame in his/her life, which one game would you show them as an example of a videogame and why? The end goal doesn't have to be to get them to play videogames, but rather just show them the title which defines the phrase "videogame".

Any Halo. It's cooperative. Fun. If they can't play simple Halo (because some people just can't play FPSs), LBP because it's creative and original. Or any Burnout for simple, fast, fun racing.

If I wasn't trying to get them to play games, then I suppose any game would serve your suggested purpose, as every video game "is" a video game and is therefor a competent example of such.

Probably Zelda, especially seeing as A Link to The Past was the second game I played after Super Mario World.

Depends on what kind of person they are i guess. If they are your friend then you should know what they would be into...Ex. an adventerous(sp?) person would like Oblivion or F.O.3, ETC. you know? im probably of no help in this situation but find a really good game in the genre you think they might like and wing it.

Either Tetris or Pac-Man. They're boh very early examples of the whole collective thing known as video games and demonstrate the basics of control over some object to try and reach an arbitrary goal set forth by the designer.

Super Mario World. Don't ask me why, but I don't even really need to think about it. The answer is Super Mario World.

Always start at the classics i.e. Super Mario for the NES. Keep it simple and fun.

I would chose something that would interest them and would understand right away.

For example if they like baseball show them a baseball game. Not only will they understand the rules, but also understand the appeal of participating in the game rather then passively just watching a game on tv.

A video game that defines it's self as video game?

I'd suggest Arx Fatalis, it has all the Hallmarks to prepare you for the rough and tumble of gaming:

Fun combat, gore, controls that require a PhD in theoretical physics to operate (okay, they're not that hard) and a noticeable difference when you play certain styles (archer, thief, wizard or warrior).

Probably Halo because your able to jump in pretty easy, multiplayer, and easy to get good at.

This, it is the game that got me interested in video games.

Start him at the basics, give him a 2D Mario game, then make fun of him by watching him suffer through Ninja Gaiden.

I would make them play a simulator like Falcon 4.0, Steel Beasts Pro PE, IL-2 Sturmovik or Silent Hunter III. Only because I'm a bastard and like to see people cry.
