It won't die, but if the market becomes so small, we PC gamers aren't going to get all the major console releases if they're not going to make a profit.

As for torturing people, its for their own good, like hitting a bad dog with a newspaper. You should feel lucky that people care enough to try to help you become a better person. Its a good thing I was born perfect or I would have to be tortured myself.
Oi, fuck you. I didn't deserve it at all.

On track. The Phantom console would've been a PC without the PC or something, but it died before the PC did.

Then I could stop being convinced by people who "know better" that PCI express is so much better than AGP was. That I should really buy a Pentium 2 while my old Pentium 1 could play all the games that came out before Quake III. That I need an operating system that requires 1024 MB internal memory to run properly. That I need an external sound card rather than the one on my motherboard. I would not have to buy a new video card because some really bad game designer has made a game that looks almost as good as Half-Life 2, but only runs proper with an all new, slightly better (maybe...) 400 Euro card.

Here's a much more interesting question: Would it actually matter that much to anyone except the anally-retentive 'hardcore' PC gaming fanboys?

When: 2500

Where: A barren waste land... New Jersey (hey-yo)

Who/What: A super atomic Jack thompson, who had survived so long by pacts with the devil. He mistook PC gaming for the Florida Bar though

Effect: MMO gamers would mass, and condense to form a gigantic, underdressed girl avatar to fight Jack

Why: They all played naked girl avatars

How: Captain Planet wanted in on the action, so he "accidently" spilled some toxic waste

Really, if PC gaming died then console gaming would follow. D&D would be history, forget about books, and musicals? Concrete feet, thats what happened to musicals. Shortly followed by the apocalypse, and Tycho and Gabe shall rise to thge heavens... Tycho had a helicopter, and fight god for the right to heaven. Meanwhile, Earth becomes the new hell and is filled with reality programming and stupid anime... Wait a second, thats ALREADY HAPPENED. YOUR BLEW IT UP! DAMN YOU, DAMN YOU TO HELLLLLLLLLLL...

But seriously, dont you love how people take this whole issue so seriously. Even if PC gaming came down on hard times, it would still survive. How, you ask me with that knowing look. Why, RTS games of course, god knows consoles will never perfect them so STOP TRYING. Though Dune on Playstation was great.

There are a lot of casual gamers on the PC. Arguably more casual PC gamers than casual console players. There's also a lot of money, especially from internet games, in this audience.

So IMHO, yes.

Slightly off subject; For all this negativity about PC gaming in the future, I just want to add my speck of enthusiasm.

Luckily for me, my favourite game genre, the point and click adventure, is almost exclusive to the PC, they're generally cheap to make compared to most other genres, and they've become somewhat more popular in Europe lately which is only good news for me.

Though Dune on Playstation was great.
Don't get me started on that game! I used to play 2-player link up. Countless stories of playing epic 7 hour battles with my best friend until 4am.

It would immediately come back. Small, independent developers would flourish, just like in the beforetimes and the longlongago. Perhaps we'd even see a return to quality, depth, and infuriating bugs. I for one miss those days...
We have a winner... oh, and welcome to The Escapist.

Of course! Games on PC affects the casual audience too - especially since the hardcore PC users are a minority when compared to the insane amount of PCs that "casual" games can run on with their low specs.

No more Runescape or WoW, or Bejeweled...or...

nancy drew games...

Hell, anyone can run anything annywhere, basically, nowadays. I think the GldSrc engine could run on the DS. People, someone needs to look into that so we can portable port Half-Life.

I'll try to be realistic here on how PC gaming, or gaming for that matter could end and what would happen. For any gaming to end, the current economy would have to come to a screeching halt. In another words, the US dollar becomes worthless. People will be in a panic. You won't be going to to your convenience or toy stores anymore. You'll be spending time figuring out how to survive. Ok that's a big extreme but realistic. Also at our rate of unemployment (5.5%) and climbing, eventually only the rich will be playing video games, so the market will decline. The cost of new PC's and consoles just keep going up as well, in reality only the rich will be playing with the new toys.
I think what would happen if PC gaming came to a screeching halt, there would still be a small group of PC gamers, and out of them would come PC game developers. Imo, though, we all are way too addicting to gaming. Instead of your average kid wanting to get an education and a career, they want to play video games instead. It's the reason why Japan's govt doesn't allow people under 18 to play online games. There's nothing wrong with playing games, it's only wrong when it becomes your one and only priority in life. I also think it's wrong to beef up your ego because you play on some console or play better than others. Really it means nothing. The whole point in gaming and competition is to have fun, any more than this deserves judgment.

I don't think Half-Life will work considering how bad Halo casero and Counter-strike PSP are.

They made Halo and CS on the PSP? I can't imagine any good coming from that.
Plus, putting CS on a non-pc system is a ridiculous idea, how are you supposed to download all the latest hax?

There not brutal just with homebrew games you can't really max the thing out. There is "hax" for the FPS PSP CS you download form the creators site and put them on.

Yeah, nah.

Developers won't stop creating the only system that isn't limited.

Consoles are limited by there pre-installed hardware, pc's are not.

Handheld's are limited by there inny weeny size, PC's are not.

If anything, console systems are becoming more like PC's. The PC industry will simply assimilate the console market eventually.

The end.
If you read the original post, the OP states that its obviously not going to happen. We're just playing make-believe here;"What if pigs could fly? We'd have an easier time getting bacon on airplanes."

Thank you, although the word you want is "you're".
I also happen to be an English teacher on top of being a macho, sexy, handsome, charismatic, iridescent, burly, intelligent, tall, socially well-endowed, and let us not forget, happy ex-game tester person.

I can see why you might take a shine to me.

Oh yeah, and I'm humble also.

Here, save that to your HDD for future use.

Whether the guy is serious or not, it's equally funny.
