4chan, as I understand it is one of their "home base" websites, where a lot of the people who consider themselves as part of the "group"(term loosely used, VERY very loosely)congregate and spend time they should be using for faxing or organizing files or something.

Depending on your point of view, they are internet terrorists or defenders of freedom. They are pro-free speech and will what they can, including illegal activity, to prevent censorship. Unfortunately, they also pull some massive dick moves based on their anonymity. They often embody the worst qualities of humanity, including lack of empathy, prejudice including racism and sexism, and are quick to anger and vengeance. Oftentimes they will engage in activities that are viewed very positively by the internet community at large while engaging in activities that earn nothing but scorn. For what it's worth, most of what they do is in jest (i.e. for the lulz), but they have a pretty twisted sense of humour. They are the Lokis of the 'Net.

A non-organized collective of hackers with a "My penis is bigger" syndrome. Will probably collapse upon itself and we will never know about it.

They are a bunch of silly billys, many of whom frequent the /b/ board on 4chan, who think that by pissing people off enough they will get their way. I strongly support the causes which they are fighting for, but I think that they could go about it a bit better. For example their whole Project Chanology, where they actually went out and protested was great, they got positive media coverage, and they stayed on the right side of the law. With their DDoSing of government websites and bank websites they crossed a line that really damaged their credibility with the average people who just unquestioningly swallowed the lie that they were hacking these sites. Due to the fact that they have no real central leadership, they don't really have a central goal and on occasion work against each other.

They're a group of hackers, not neccesary accosiated to each other, who will work together to promote freedom of speech on the internet. However, they have been linked to attacks on a variety of different people, not all of them provoked (I'd assume that its a splinter cell, or just a coincedence). Normally if its an offical Anonymous act, then there will be a point to it, and they'll openly admit to it. They have been accused of doing things that they didn't do.
