I mean the absolute insanity and violence, this doesnt seem to be the case (or as bad) in other sports....

is just becuse of its massive popularity? is it because of epople devotion to it?

Over here in England the fans can get pretty bad. I know when I still lived with my dad that if Liverpool (his team of choice) lost he'd come home in a foul mood and be a moody bastard all day.

I just find it hilarious that people continue to support these guys no matter how many times they make bad decisions on the pitch, especially during the World Cup. I'm not big on footie, but when it comes to the World Cup I watch it. It's shocking how English players pale in comparison to foreign teams, who have clearly much better players and athletes. A lot of English footballers are more celebrity than athlete these days, their popularity softens them and apparently makes them horrible as a team.

I think the size of the game has something to do with it. It's so prevelant here and there's always fights locally whenever there's an important match going on. Yet rugby, cricket and tennis... never a peep out of the core fans.

Soccer is hyped and the players are payed way too much here in Germany. Also: Puplic transportation totally breaks down when there's a soccer game in the vicinity.

I think it's the same as carnival:

People just look for an excuse to get drunk and behave like idiots.

It's funny cause, in my experience, in Australia soccer fans are the tamest. They seem to take the whole 'gentleman' thing seriously. I mean I've seen cricket (CRICKET!) fans go on a bender and found out the next morning that the night ended with the arrival of police paddy wagons, but soccer fans just seem to get drunk and sing. But as I said, that's just my experience.

I do like a maxim I heard on a tv show once.
Soccer players are hooligans pretending to be gentlemen.
Rugby Union players are gentlemen pretending to be hooligans.
Rugby League players are hooligans who are honest with themselves.

I think it's okay with hockey because violence is a big part of the sport as it is, but soccer doesn't really incorporate violence.

Still fun to watch Bar-Fights-On-Skates.

With soccer, violence is quite a part of the culture, too. You get punch ups between players, people breaking each others legs, that sort of thing and the fans are very driven.

You can't call all the stupid people fighting over a football game fans to the teams. Most of them only want to get in a fight and doesn't care about the sport at all.

the fans are terrible...

they have to split the teams' fans up to stop full-scale riots(although this is in England so Football is the main sport, probabaly be less severe in the US, with less support for the sport overall), but if you went to a Rugby game, everyone is together, there are very rarely riots and everyone just enjoys the game(or so i hear)

i suppose that it may be since most fans are men, that the lack of women to calm us down(it's scientifically proven that that happens), we get too hyped up, add in the alcohol and you get a drunk man, who is angry, and not going to calm down any time soon

Germany has it pretty good in comparison... I don't know about Bundesliga paypackets, but typical Premier League players get £125k plus... a week. And yet they still complain about being taxed (*cough* Andrei Arshavin *cough*) and not liking where they play (*cough* Mario Balotelli *cough*).

Thankfully, football firm violence is a rare occurrence in England, though the Old Firm Derby in the SPL can get very ugly... As for the players, most of them are wusses.

Me personally, I watch it (almost purely for the game) so I can break teams down (tactically) and see how they match up against future opposition, then get pissed off when players get injured (Bobby Zamora two years ago will forever annoy me) and laugh when the Big Four get beaten (and laugh even more when Man City get beaten).

As for actual sport following for the players and team: ECCC all the way. They've lost only twice this season, but can't get a bonus point to save their lives, stupid idiots!

I dunno about you but if I had to watch a bunch of guys just running around a giant field for more than an hour to a final score of naught, I'd be pretty angry too.

Because football players are mostly overpaid wimps, and people get angry at them, Lol. When i go to twickenham its always a great atmosphere, but at old trafford you sometimes fear for your life!

I continue to support England even when they lose. What else would I do? Switch over to Spain? Or just declare that I don't even want them to win any more? Certainly supporting a team doesn't mean expecting them to win.

Don't listen to reporters claiming that England crashing out of the 2010 World Cup was unexpected. Complaints about the performance were justified, but I never met a single person in real life who genuinely expected anything else. People have high hopes for England, but high expectations are an invention of the media. Newspapers claim that everyone in England considers their international side to be world-class, but not a single living person actually does. Unfortunately, it's this invented 'public opinion' that gets exported and reported on, giving the English a reputation as deluded football fantasists.

That said, England's player quality doesn't actually lag behind other countries as far as it seems. We're awful in tournaments for a lot of reasons, but not necessarily that our players aren't individually competitive. The issue is more a question of organisation, fitness, media pressure and all the other stuff people whine about.

There's almost annual fights at the Australian Open, generally between Serbian and Croatian fans.

It's not that soccer actually causes violence, it's just an excuse for thugs to run riot.

I keep up with how my team's faring, but i don't watch the games, even on TV because it seems like a waste of a perfectly good 90+ minutes, especially when I can keep up with the results online, anyway.
Hooligans(gotta love that word)? Most of them are just pugnacious fuckwits.

what, you mean the fans or the players? cause soccer players arent really playin a violent sport. I mean, yeah, those diving/sliding kicks and can dangerous and hurts someone, but when you compare to Hockey, Rugby, (American) Football, Lacrosse, etc. its not that violent.

in the eastern parts of germany it's always kinda like this:

alot of people rally every weekend to bash their heads and start a little rioting and if they are lucky a little game of football might break out alongside these events ;)
