Careful there... Corgis are the preserve of Her Majesty! (ma'am, *tips cap*)
OT: I'm sure I've said this before on a different thread, but as dogs were bred from wolves to be domesticated, I go the other way... I want my dog (if I had one) to be:
They're needy, territorial and your hands tend to get coated in a foul-smelling grease after stroking one. Personal opinion and experience, of course. But anything that needs to be locked up after a bath to prevent it from rolling in fecal matter sounds like too much of a hassle.
They're admittedly invaluable for search-and-rescue. leading the blind, herding and protection, but the idea of keeping one as a pet holdsvery little appeal for me.
I'm fine with OTHER people's dogs, but I'd hate to own a dog myself. They're too dependent, they smell bad*, they try to lick your face (can't stand that), and they're just a huge amount of effort.
If I wanted to put that much effort into maintaining another life form, I'd get a girlfriend. ZING!
*Admittedly, so do cats, but you have to stick your face in a cat to smell it, whereas you can smell a dog from across the room. There's also the litterbox issue, but if you keep it clean then it's less of a problem. Much easier to pick up a litterbox than to bathe a dog.
I've always wanted a Husky or, a Mastiff. Living at home with mom and the siblings at the moment and she's got a white Pomeranian, a mutt (beagle mixed with something...he looks like a sausage) and, a german Shepard.
We also have a cat. I love cats, I think I'd rather have a cat than a dog but I like cats more by a slight margin.
I love them. I have three. Two red dachshunds and one small golden haired mutty mix. She's about the size of a chihuahua, and her fur is always messy even after she's brushed. Two are saved dogs that I just couldn't let go of, and one was from my Mother's dachshunds second litter.

My oldest dog doesn't much like the camera - so I have to snipe one and they are always of lesser quality. lol
I'll admit that the two girl dogs previous owners weren't great owners, and this has left some emotional scarring on them that we've had to overcome. One is skiddish of everything that has a handle and even dog toys. She's also stand-offish towards humans who aren't her owner, but she's never EVER bitten anyone. It takes time to actually earn her trust. And when you do, she's a sweetie. They've had their problems, but, I wouldn't give them up for anything.
I've NEVER gotten along with a cat, ever. I've just never felt a bond with one. I've owned three of them, and took care of each to the best of my abilities. They were placed in other homes. My appreciation for dogs increased by a wide margin after I was a cat owner.
I think neither species is better then the other, it just depends largely on your personal preference, your life-style, and temperament. Some of the comments on this thread, sound disturbingly bitter and elitist. lol
I love dogs! All shapes and sizes but prefer big ones.
I curently own a german shepherd who is smarter than most people I know and a rescued racing greyhound who is probably the dumbest dog I've met!
If I had the room/land I'd open my own kennels/dog rescue centre!
I think dogs are better than most people.....you can take them for face value! You know they love you, protect you and want to be with you. Whereas people and animals(cats) can be very two faced and more likely to stab you in the back!
I also have 3 cats and most people think they are easier to keep but I find them harder! They are so much more needy than my dogs and whinge all the time for everything...for food(despite just being fed), they shit/piss in the box, stand in it and then walk all over you/the kitchen counter!
I don't like dogs, for five reasons.
1: I don't like being around things with their dongs hanging about and I wouldn't want to be at all responsible for the none-medicinal castration of an innocent living being.
2: They're f***ing loud.
3: They can bite things and people, including you and your couch.
4: I'd rather not clean up poo.
5: They're so dogarn clingy, give me some private space, you bloody stalkers.
I have never had a seriously bad experience with any dogs, and between my own and my grandparents dogs, I have grown to love them and understand them well. Whenever I encounter dislike towards dogs it tends to stem from a lack of upbringing close to them, or a series of bad experiences / one terrible experience.
There are very few inherently bad dogs, very few. It's lack of proper understanding of raising a dog, or direct abuse that causes any dog to become at all violent or ill tempered. I cannot deny certain breeds of pack dog do need a strong alpha presence, and be brought up from a puppy around the people it will live with, with a stern and loving hand. These dogs can be very difficult for even the initiated to raise and are often depressingly a symbol of "machoness", so abusive ignorant idiots buy them and put no effort into raising and disciplining the dog, even going so far as to tease and anger it. I loathe these people passionately.
Anyway, dogs are generally great, I do like them and respect them, and have grown to love those close to me.
I don't like dogs. For one, they're the wrong kind of challenge to me. I'm a creative person who likes to indulge in spurts of micromanaging with animal species that are relatively forgiving when it comes to making mistakes, not a person who likes the idea of constantly shaping an animal with all of my daily actions, intentionally or not, and be majorly screwed if I let some bad habit slip. Sure, I still make sure I treat my animals properly, but I just don't need the unnecessary pressure to succeed.
I'm more into invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, and birds (not parrots, obviously, since they tend to be even worse in this regard than dogs). Also, even though it's not really related to keeping pets, I like growing plants.
