So, as everyone has been calling it, a new title that was announced a while back which was dubbed Dark Souls. For anyone who has played Demon's Souls, this game will seem like a spiritual successor to the previous game, but that's because it actually is.

Dark Souls will boast the same mechanics that Demon's Souls offered that have been rumored towards being filed down and smoothed out for online function and gameplay, not to mention that the same development team is behind this. So, for anyone who was dreading the downfall of the servers for Demon's Souls, you might just yet find relief with this game as it hopefully tries to find a place in your interest. It will most likely be released around this fall, right around when they pull down the servers for Demon's Souls.

Overall, this is great news for me, so I'm anticipating the(pardon my language) fuck out of this. This game plus the Shadow of the Colossus/Ico remastered version and The Last Guardian will certainly be on my shelf.

For anyone who wants to see the trailer, it's right here -

Did everything but the final boss in DS...

Too lazy to spend 30 minutes spamming Soul Arrow on the green dragon...and too manly to dodge it's fire.

Spellspear, btw.

Dark Souls will be bought.

I liked it very much.
It is too hard for me really. I only finished 1-1 and 1-2
Now I am doing...3-1 I think? Some kind of Jail.

I do strive forward though.
Totally gonna buy Dark Souls even though I will never be able to finish the tutorial there.

I never played it so all I can do is speculate, but it doesn't seem like a game I would enjoy. It seemed like a game that kills you near constantly through incredibly tough mooks that can drain half your health in one swing and nigh unavoidable traps and hazards. After it kills you it also looks like it likes to flip you off and piss on your corpse.

I was enjoying it, was quite far into it when I decided to start a new game and try out a new class. Killed the first boss and got a bit bored so decided to go to load profile to go on my main save. In doing so something happened and the new game I started saved over my main save and now I have to start again.

Everytime I try I just lose interest because I've already done all the stuff I'm having to do again and I don't want to fight Flamelurker again, prick can go fuck himself in his little cave.

As someone who hasn't played it either, I can certainly say that it would be a game I would certainly enjoy for precisely the reasons you've laid out (I play a lot of Monster Hunter on the PSP, so that counts for a bit). Though to be fair it is a game I've had my eye on since its first release in Japan, and is guaranteed to be a purchase if ever I get around to acquiring a PS3.

Definite have high hopes for the successor as well, though it'll probably be more for the sidelines again.

It's not that I don't like challenging games (I purchased the real Super Mario Bros. 2 on Wiiware, and beat it. Also beat Doom 2 on nightmare), but a game like that seems like it only exists to mock you. I think Yathzee said it best with his final summing up sentence on it. Oh yeah, and I went through WaW on veteran.

Actually, he's really easy on the first play through. Just make sure that you have a decent bow, thief's ring, some holy arrows, then proceed to lure him to the left of the room where there's a pillar and a ribcage. Lure him behind the rib cage and make yourself to the other side of the room. Finally, after he begins ignoring you, feel free to unload on him.

Oh, first I really hope I wasn't giving off an impression to that fact. I personally just reaaaaaally like punishing games in that vein because there's just an innate satisfaction of finally beating that one guy who's been laughing in your face for the last couple of hours. Hell, it's why I'm also a fan of the ol' Wizardry series and it's offspring of dungeon crawlers, as well as games that include Permadeath (ie: Way of the Samurai for PS2 & your garden variety Roguelike) and Ironman modes in general.

(For the record, I don't find myself some big, manly, amazing and super skilled gamer. No, quite the contrary to be honest. I just really like having to work to beat a game.)

Demon's Souls was a fantastic game. I went with a knight class and boosted strength mostly, as well as Endurance a little past max Stam. Crushing Claymore +5, Crushing Knightsword +5, and Crushing Mace +5 tend to get the job done (along with Tower Shield +5). SL 138 I think right now, NG++. Haven't played in a while though... last time I got another trophy... just gotta collect a ton of stones and crap and that isn't very fun so mostly I'm waiting for Dark Souls. Definitely look forward to that one.

Very interesting, indeed!

Thanks for bringing this (spiritual) sequel to my attention. I love those games where you can just lose yourself for hours in the twisting mazes of endless castle dungeons. Although not the same genre, the experience itself seems very akin to Diablo or Torchlight, where you just delve deeper and deeper into the depths; increasing your powers and gathering more loot.

This time around though, I really hope they bind everything together with a stronger and more cohesive storyline. Also, since many people were split over the original's difficulty, a more forgiving game mode for inexperienced players would help broaden the game's appeal.

I loved that game. I was very skeptical when I bought it because of what everyone that I knew was telling me, and I bought it just to make them shut up about it. Then I fell in love.

I will say, my choice of rogue was stupid, but I made it through.

Dark Souls will be bought and I will enjoy having my own ass handed to me on a gold platter with trumpets sounding!

Great game, I use a Blue Blood sword build, a weapon that gets more powerful with higher Luck (although it's usually less cost effective raising it above 25 due to diminishing returns).

Pair that with the spell, Light weapon, and we're talking about crazy amounts of damage.

Dark Souls is looking awesome, certainly a niche title for those of us who love hard, but fair, challenges.

This gamespot video gives a good overview of what to expect from the developers themselves, and even has some commentary about the difficulty towards the end:

Love loved it. When I beat it it gave me a sense of accomplishment that several other games put together couldn't.

Far from beating it, but I loved Demon's Souls. Hope to get back to it before Dark Souls comes out cause I do plan on getting it too.
