I've always had an interest in playing Final Fantasy 7. I like the characters, the setting, and the turn-based gameplay, so naturally there had to be a defining reason why I haven't gotten my hands on it.

The two biggest hurtles was that Legend of the Dragoon got my attention first and I wasn't sold on the graphics of this title. I always hoped that if Square Enix remade this game to have updated graphics and some exclusive features (think Resident Evil Remake for the Game Cube), I'd be the first to dive into this classic.

...Then, Square Enix showed that it'll be developing a Action RPG system akin to Kingdom Hearts, apart from updating the graphics.

Don't get me wrong; I've enjoyed all the Kingdom Hearts titles (the exception, of course, being Re:coded), but I just wanted to enjoy Final Fantasy 7 the way it was intended (again, like the Resident Evil Remake).

So now that Final Fantasy 7 will be remade into a different game with all the familiar fixings, who here wants to play the original or is already fully submerged into it?

I'm honestly considering downloading and playing it right now from the PS Store, despite me disliking the graphics, the original reason I haven't played it.

I have already downloaded it to the PS4. My main reason is because I want the trophies, since I already own an original copy of the game. I haven't started playing it yet because I remember how much of a time sink the game becomes, but I fully intend to in the near future.

That being said, I really think you should give it a try. Yeah, the graphics of the characters aren't amazing. They're pretty bad actually. But the backgrounds that you're running through are great, and if you can just hang on for a an hour, maybe two or three, then your brain should adjust and not notice the graphics anymore. If you can get yourself engaged in the story and the characters, instead of what they look like, you'll be in for a real treat I think. People often say VII is overrated, but I don't think so. It really is a great game with lots to do outside of the main quest and memorable characters. And the story is pretty good too. It's your normal Japanese "save-the-world!" RPG story, but it's still great if you like that sort of thing.

Yeah, I'm playing FF7 on PS4 at the moment as well(which is apparently the 'ultimate' PC edition). It's still the same game as from 1997 obviously but the textures are a lot sharper(still has the same low polygon count but there is pretty much no jagginess that plagued the original) and the pre-rendered backgrounds look a lot cleaner as well(again compared to the washed out .GIFs of the original). Add in analogue support and the option to speed up the game x 4 and it definitely bumps my enjoyment revisiting this game quite a bit.

As for the game itself; it's a classic for a reason. The story while not overly original is just a lot of fun and in general just very well put together. There is an evil corporation, a legendary villain, a forgotten civilization and a hero with amnesia. Now FF7 has it's own unique spin on these tropes and you could argue it was the game that made them popular in the first place. I personally also really love those '90's cyberpunk influences on the game which in its turn are firmly rooted in popular anime at the time. Add in a great sense of adventure and colorful characters and FF7 just remains a very fun game.

Personally I'd say FF7, Xenogears and Digital Devil Saga are my favorite JRPGs.

I'm playing Final Fantasy 7 on my PS3 right now - I just got to Mideel for the first time on Disc 2 after some pretty intense plot events, which is the furthest I've ever got with the game. I've tried to play it a few times over the years I've owned it (I have it on PS1 and PSP as well) and I've just never been able to keep my interest going with it after leaving Midgar but this time I'm determined to soldier on and get through it and I have to admit I'm glad I have. The plot is decent and has taken a couple of turns I wasn't expecting despite ingrained in gaming consciousness this game's major twists are, most of the major characters are endearing and the ATB system has aged alright I'd say. I don't think it's quite up there with my favourite JRPGs but it's easy to see why it captured the hearts and minds of gamers in 1997 and I reckon it's definitely holding up today.

I will be replaying it soon. Havent played it for a few years now think the last time I completed it was 2012 or something which was my tenth time doing so. Did have a quick look at the PS4 version and its just in higher picture quality. I can still play the original no problems but being a bit sharper is always nice.

As for the game I love it, theres a reason its the only RPG I have managed to properly complete more than once. Will be going for the Barret date at gold saucer next time I play both for the trophy and for the fact I have never got it before (feel bad if I have to be a dick to Tifa) never had Yuffie either only Aeris, Tifa (ofc) and no one.

Also never really used Cait Sith and Cid in my party so will do that this time as well (dont like Cait Sith much). Im looking forward to the remake but the original will always be a classic imo.

I've completed it a few years ago on my Vita and this little machine still has an unfinished FFIX (which I am slowly but surely trying to complete) and also Suikoden I and II, Front Mission 3, plus I have a backlog on PS3 and PC. And I also really, REALLY want to play FFX/X-2 HD since the first one is my favourite FF game and it's sequel... Well, I am willing to give it a second chance at least because of battle system and dress spheres (shut uuup, game mechanics-wise they are amazing).

Buuuut, after all that, yeah sure, why not?

I was playing it for a while, then I got distracted. This announcement of the remake makes me glad I have it both on PC and for my Vita, because I have no interest in whatever satire Squeenix is behind.

I actually started playing the Final Fantasy 7 PS4 port alongside a friend fairly recently. Though I'm not too fond of the easily accessible boosts (No Encounters/3x Speed/Insta-Limit Break), it certainly brought back some memories of when I first played any game in the Final Fantasy series. It's funny... Before I played this port, I never actually did play the original. I played the PC version maybe once some years ago, but I don't think that I got very far with it.

Currently replaying it right now on my PS4 for the trophies. I first got the game in 1997 and have loved it ever since.

I'm probably gonna wait until more details of the remake come out. If it actually looks worth it (not too optimistic about the episodic releases or the possible dropping of turn based battles), I'll wait for that, If it looks like a total departure of what I want in a Final Fantasy, I'll just play one of the copies of the original I own or try the Steam version. (I also have Lost Odyssey (if I can ever find time to start it) and Bravely Default on backlog. FFVII will have to wait.)

D'oh, thanks for reminding me that my PSP has a FFIX file right at the end of disc 2. I seriously need to get that finished before any other FF shenanigans.

Yeah, just go with FFX/X-2 HD. It is a good update (especially if you never got to try FFX International). I agree that X-2, mechanically, is excellent. It probably the only 3D job system type FF we'll ever see with road Square seems to be going down.

I'm not a huge FFVII fan and I have no plans to buy the remake but the announcement of the remake did actually put me in the mood to play it again. Or at least play a classic Final Fantasy again. I'm still deciding between I, V, and VII. Or Chrono Trigger.

I was consdering playing it again but I've got too many RPGs to play or that I've been wanting to finish. Breath of Fire 4 being one I stopped and would like to go through fully. Tales of Zestira is one that I haven't had the time to play which has been pretty fun. ....Friend got me Hyper Dimensional Neptunia Re:Birth 3 so I guess I'm obligated there too.

IDK I don't think square these days has the ability to remake FFVII, they're all flash and no substance. The game will look incredible for sure but the story and characters are going to suffer.

I plan on replaying it someday, since the last time I played it was in 1999 or something like that.Especially after having played and beaten a lot of the other main FF games and I really want to see how different it feels compared to when it was the first FF game I actually finished all those years ago.

But I still need to finish FFX(which I intend to do this weekend) and play through X-2 before I even think about another JRPG.

Since I have seen the gameplay, I actually have felt like playing through FF12 again because the combat looks similar. I doubt I would make it through though, that game is so long.

I actually have a save file going in FF7 right now. I believe I am currently at the chocobo stable right at the start. I stopped because I have so many games going that I lose track of what to play. Gamer problems.

Just beat it, actually. It's a great game with a system that's easy to learn but hard to master. The graphics are pretty awful, which put me off when I first played it, but you get past that pretty fast. The writing and body language do a pretty good job of conveying the story, and there are some really emotional moments in the series. It also has the best soundtrack in the series, which doesn't hurt. There are some wonky translation errors in the game, which they still haven't fixed, but at this point they're as iconic as the RE lines everyone remembers.

It's easily my favorite Square game, and I enjoyed it much more then Chrono Trigger and the other FF games. I would argue that it certainly had the best plot.

No. I played it many years ago, and finished it. And I quite liked it. But it didn't do enough to make me replay it ever again

I eagerly await the remake.

It's funny, my sister recently sent me a message stating that she defeated Ruby Weapon. Even more impressively, it was not by using its one and only weakness: It can be Stopped.
