i just watched this

and then i thought to myself... everyone just seems to "agree" that this is one of the greatest games ever made. why?

EDIT: Must have confused "important" with "great". :/ well, ive only ever heard praise for it whenever ive heard about it. thats why i i thought it was just one of those "accepted facts".

You could make a parady of anything and make it look like laughable crap, but still gotta respect the original for what it was at its time.

I have no idea. I've never actually played it. I haven't played most 'classics' either. I guess people who are into JRPGs and stuff just think it did everything (or most things) really well? I have no idea. There's no accounting for taste.

I don't think it´s that good I played it both when it was new and quite recently and thought both times that it was an uninteresting mediocre game.

Never played it so I cant really say. But seeing as it has a huge fanbase and is considered a gaming classic I'm guessing the game did something right.

For alot of people it was one of the first games they played that went beyond "kill monsters".

It had technological innovation, was a large epic game and it was generally compotently put together and to be honest that's all you need to get alot of people to say it's one of the best ever. I mean look at the number of people who say Baldur's Gate 2 is one of the best ever.

From looking at these posters I'd say it's quite apparent that we don't all agree that Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever.

FF7 isn't the best in the series, it's the most hyped and commercially successful FF game at the time of it's release.

Did you know you can play that game using only Cure/All and Fight and not have any trouble with any parts of the game? It has strategy-less battles and your randomly given Limit Breaks which basically end random battles instantly.
The Jenova cells changing peoples memories or whatever it was doing was bad writing.

FF9 did a good job but the character design was pretty off.
FF8 - draw system. Bleh.
FF6 is the best in the series but suffers from game breaking skills (barrier piercing) in far too many abilities.
Actually, I'll drop FF6 down a notch. Final Fantasy Tactics was the best in the series if you want to count it. It had the story, the balance, the strategy.

As for the awesome series, it's @#%$! awesome!! Metal Gear Awesome definitely had the strongest punch into creating a new type of series and story-telling style.

I think they put digital heroin into the game because I spent a whole month completing the fucking thing.

It's rather like Halo - Halo was people's first FPS experience in a lot of cases, so they straight up love it. FF7 was people's first RPG experience in a lot of cases. In game cinematics were quite shiny too, rather like Myst, which was another highly acclaimed game that simply took advantage of being on CD-ROM.

FF7 isn't anything special looking back, but it was a pioneer, so people who played it when it came out think it's better than it actually is.

I just don't really life JRPG's in general. They are always so patted out and take forever to get anywhere.

Because it is JRPG at its Western finest (huh?). By that I mean it's a JRPG that eschews most of the drawbacks that modern Western gamers dislike about them, constant grinding being one of the biggest. I don't mean that it does away with them, but their usage is much more palatable.

Also, this game was a system launcher. A LOT of people bought a Playstation and this was one of the big games that came out when the system was launched (I even remember the commercials for it). Since it was a new system with few games out, A LOT of people played it. I think the biggest thing is this game was the first of its kind that many people played. There weren't many "epic" RPGs in the 8-bit/16-bit era.

Also the storyline was also very compelling. Most people were not aware of intricate Japanese storytelling, other than anime watchers of which there were fewer back then, so the twists and such were not seen.

You have to admit that the materia system was a very innovative (and for me interesting) gameplay mechanic. The fact that everything was so customizable and there were so many things to do that weren't part of the plot kept people playing for hours as well. I can't tell you how many hours I wasted just playing that stupidly awesome snowboarding game.

TL;DR it was a groundbreaking game at the time

I played it for the first time last year, the story is nice, the music is amazing, and the graphics grew on me

Who said this, i don't remeber agreeing to this.It brought JRPGs to the mainstream, but its not the best game ever. Also its a really good game.Don't listen to those assholes thats says its crap just because its overated, actually no its not overaded, its just there is game just as good or better(FF6) that don't get as much praise.
