So... why do we all agree Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever?

Because it's a good game, because it was a lot of people's first JRPG, and because even if the graphics haven't aged particularly well it looked spectacular at the time, paricularly considering other RPGs were still 2D sprite based.

Unless you were playing games at the time it's hard to realise just how far ahead of the pack games like FF7, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil were. Around 1996/1997 they were the last word in graphical lushness, hard as that may be to believe looking back.

I never agreed to this.

I think its a decent game thats stupidly overrated.
This is what I agree with.

Good game for it's time, yeah.

Pretty sure the greatest appeal of it is that it came out when I was young lol.

and then i thought to myself... everyone just seems to "agree" that this is one of the greatest games ever made. why?
If everyone seems to agree with that, then all you've been talking to is the FF fanbase.
Most gamers don't give crap about FF7.

Who is this "we" you speak of? It's far from a bad game, but I wouldn't even put FF7 that near the top of greatest FF games never mind greatest games overall.

I'm not really a fan of oversized swords, so no. We don't agree. The characters also seem to be suffering from some kind of a leg-twisted-to-the-outside condition, whatever that would be.

Its because its the first FF in 3d, set in a steampunk era, with one of the most recognized heroes, Cloud, for beying a amnesic soldier using a giant sword, and having one of the biggest villains in FF, a crazy ass, ex soldier, with a long sword....

We don't. Hell, I liked Final Fantasy 9 better than 7, it was just that 7 was the first to bring 3-D cut scenes, 3-D game world, and other great innovations to the series.

Kind of like how Super Mario 64 and what it did for its genre. Some would say that it's amazing, but I liked Super Mario Galaxy better, but ya have to respect what it did for its time.

It was amazing and innovative game, both technical and gamelpay wise back when it was released. And it probably is one of the most important games ever. I remember it was voted #1 game on PS1 back when PS2 was released. Despite all that it still wouldn't even make my top 5 list. I like FFIX more.

Perhaps ten years ago, it was the best game ever made (and i was a fanboy for oh so long) but now every other game is given RPG elements and have large amounts of money spent on plot and graphics, i feel it has not aged well. FFVII came at a time when Squaresoft were afraid to experiment, whereas now they just abruptly ignore the fanbase.

Granted, i wasn't around when this first came out, but I tried playing FFVII recently and I found it to be a broken, nearly unplayable mess. If i have to deal with a random encounter every five steps, I just can't handle it anymore. Maybe i didn't give it enough time, but I literally couldn't stand it for the first two hours.

Truth is FF7 is pretty god damn overrated, but back when it was new it was hard to feel that way. This was before the advanced graphics and whatnot we have today, so FF7 seemed awesome based on the prowess of it's sexy prerendered backgrounds and FMVs alone. It may seem strange to the younger generation, but FMVs were a pretty big selling point once upon a time, combine that with a story that... well... is a story, and it's all the better.

Basically my generation liked FF7 for reasons that are inconsequential now, it was a decent gaming experience in the day, so huge nostalgia factor. Then like everything else the older generation loves, the younger generation hops on to try to feel relevant, and now you have people thinking FF7 is one of the greatest games of all time.

FF7 is definitely near the bottom of the list of Final Fantasy games. I'll give it some credit that it really got the JRPG genre going in the West and helped make 3-D graphics popular, but pretty much any Final Fantasy game is better than 7. Only ones that are really lower than 7 are 1, 3, and 5. FF6 is the best, followed closely by FF10 and then a tie between FF9, FF8, and FF4.

Side note: FF8 is so much better when you learn that drawing is pointless and you can get all your spells from items instead.

1 word: sephiroth(that how you spell it?)
he is probably THE video game villian with the largest fan base. i mean when that FF fighting game came out for the psp, everyone I talked to just wouldnt shut the hell up about how much they wanted to play as him. or it might be because you couyld breed chocobos, i dont know
