Let me preface this by saying that I don't find FFVII to be a particularly great game. Sure, it's good, but I don't think it's anything special. Then again, I'm not really a big fan of JRPGs in general, so there's that.
As for being an "important" game, I'd have to agree. FFVII may have been one of the first games to truly mark the end of cartridge days. By jumping from Nintendo to Sony, Square set a precedent for what would become the new technological standard for games.
