So... why do we all agree Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever?

I don't agree, I hated FF7 when I played it back upon release I got it launch day I sunk 80 hours into it mastering every thing finding every thing and when I hit the ending which answered no questions gave no concrete reason why and gave us really only one idea of what happend except that
the planet decided to kill people off
I destroyed the game and didn't look back till about 3 years later for the greatest hits edition used at 10 dollars. FF7 was the begining of the end for Square for me I've not respected them since and rarely buy their games.

By the way my first FF was FF1 on nes.

I dunno who thinks it as best.
Chrono trigger and chrono cross were both vastly superior to it.

Because it is.
I don't see any reason we should question why we passively agree. Hivemind, string theory? Who knows.

We don't all agree. I certainly don't. Partly because I've never played it and partly because my attitude towards turn-based combat and JRPGs is not exactly favourable.

I'm sorry your right, that was a blanket statement. Not everyone likes it, for me it just brings back nostalgic memories of that era of games. I'm sorry for lumping everyone into the same category.

We don't. I've never played it, or any Final Fantasy game. Why? Because the characters look retarded. Yes, really.
Meh muscle bound freaks in FPSs and action titles look more retarded...

I mean hell half of hip hop is dressed like the pics you posted.

All in all only half of bishōnen designs are really annoying but I am mechanic nut so I can ignore story and character issues. A shame most games are no longer built around mechanics.... or qaulity....

Final Fantasy 7 is one of my all-time favourite games.

That's why I, personally, would consider it to be one of the greatest games ever.

Apparently, it's a favourite game of many other people, too.

It's hard to explain exactly what about it makes it so great, you can't really point to one specific characteristic. I guess it's a case of "more than the sum of its parts" or something.

I would never say it's one of the greatest games ever, but I certainly enjoyed it a lot and that's all that matters to me really.

Well, I've gotta admit that it was the very first RPG I've ever played and I still find it quite fun and I like the setting of steampunkified dystopia. While I can see how important the game was for the PS1 and how relevant it was for it's time, I myself don't consider it teh greatest RPG of all time. In fact, I consider Final Fantasy in general quite overrated. And IMO, I still don't get what's the obsession with Sephirot for many people, he's just a whinning pussy.

I own it, I've played it, and I have to say, it is one of the most solidly built RPGs I've played. All the characters feel useful, the combat system works well, the magic system is interesting. The plot is actually pretty clever and throws a couple curveballs at you. I think it's one of the best I've played, and I am a fan of the Final Fantasy series.

Also, for the record, I played the game last summer.

FFVII has aged pretty badly. RPGs have come a long way since, so it doesn't surprise me when people don't understand what all of the hype is about.

I personally enjoyed FFIX and FF Tactics more. (I can also name about a dozen Squaresoft/Enix games that deserve more attention)

If a game comes and is an astonishing game at the time of it's release, of course it's gonna get a lot of praise and whatnot.

Look back on it a few years after, and you realize that the game isn't as good as you thought it was back then.

Long story short, FF7 is not the greatest FF, not by a long shot, but people ate it up during it's time, and some people still carry their total praise and worship for the game even after the years have passed.

I found it kinda laughably bad. Never finished it but combat was a grindy slogfest, the characters held nothing particularly interesting about them and there contained a lot of "could someone please explain what/how this just happened?"

It's just a good game with an intricate story and likable characters. Is it my favorite game ever, hell no (that is Mass effect 2) but it's just a great game people like to remember it's called nostalgia.

I would say that FF7 is maybe one of the most iconic games ever, but not one of the greatest. And I say that as a Square Enix fanboy.
