So... why do we all agree Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever?

To be honest FF7 is the first and only game that I've really got attached to the characters and the story. I don't care whether YOU think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread or just "an overrated pile of cow dung", what matters to me is that it set the standard for every other game I bought afterwards.

FF7 was OK I guess, but it's not in my "top games of all time". As many have said, its a decent game that is overrated (IMHO). When it comes to JRPG's I actually prefer the Persona games in terms of story to be perfectly honest with you.

A lot of people don't. Many see it as the game that ruined Final Fantasy by popularizing the emo protagonist stereotypes of the proceeding Final Fantasy games.

Personally, it wasn't my favorite FF game. It gets beaten out of that slot by FFIX and FFVI. It was, however, a pretty big leap forward graphic wise. Also, as others have said, its the 1st RPG for a lot of people which adds nostalgia factor.

It's mostly important for being the first major RPG in 3D, being the first mainstream RPG, and selling the Playstation. For a lot of people, it was also the first real RPG they played, which pretty much ensures the rose-colored glasses effect.

There's also that initial cutscene where the camera swoops up, around, and down into Midgar. That scene alone probably sold a million copies on pure impressive spectacle.

So, it doesn't hold up too well now, but it's got a pile of historical firsts to it's name and it's got nostalgia in it's favor. I personally prefer Tactics and 6, but I can see why 7 is the standard-bearer.

Um, I never realized "we" did. I've always felt it was over-hyped, badly written and uninteresting, easily the focal point of the end of my interest in "Final" Fantasy. I suppose it might be an important turning point in gaming to recognize, as it seems to be about the moment when gamers stopped caring so much about interesting characters, well-written/original plots and engaging play as they were drawn in by cutscenes and flashy graphics. Otherwise "Best" or "great" have never applied in my book.

I would like to reiterate as has many times in this thread been said: "We" do not "all" agree that this is one of the greatest games ever.

Most don't, actually. In fact, FF7 is probably up there with Halo and CoD when it comes to games people love to hate. You'd think it's Big Rigs or something.

Is it as great as some people will have you believe? Hardly. That said, it's still a remarkably good game. Well, story-wise. I'm not a fan of the characters, and even less so for the gameplay, but it's still pretty great. Not even the best FF, in my opinion, but I'm in the minority for liking 9 best. I think.

Tried it once because of the same reasons, wanted to know why it is regarded as so good.
And, as with EVERY Final Fantasy to date, there just comes a point where I simply drop out...
I never finished it, I couldn´t look at the graphics (I am not a graphic whore, but WHY not make ALL of the prerendered cutscenes in "high-polygon" mode, instead of just raising the resolution, and keeping the blocky build in SOME of them, and using the better models in SOME of them...8 did this better and more consistently, me thinks) for too long.
Altho I do remember being really hooked to the story somehow, wanted to know what will come next.

But yeah, there just comes a point where I somehow loose interest and never try again.

I didn't realize it was accepted to be great, I thought that it was accepted as a scapegoat for people who want to be cool for hating popular things, where legions of imaginary, rabid fans extol its virtues somewhere unseen so pretentious people can mock them.

It came out in the mid 90's, where it had some cool new ideas attached to horrendous, grindy gameplay. A lot of the story comes across as a bit tired and cliche in retrospect, and its easy to forget the sense of wonder you once had with how much games have improved and evolved over the years (Yes, games have improved. I said it). But dammit, you find yourself loving the characters. I can not tell you how many times I have seen cynical, anti-emotional nerds outright admit, with near pride, that they cried when Aeris died. Can anyone name a game that has moved more people to tears? Hell, to this day I hear those first 3 notes of her theme and feel a little sad. If you don't get even a tiny bit emotional when young Aeris comforts her adopted mother after she senses that her husband died in the war, or when you realize that Aeris Christ-like death is what redeemed the world, then you must have a cold, cold heart. The rest of it, fine, its a process of the evolution of the medium of games and its not going to be anything outlandish, but the attachment to characters is what makes it amazing.

(Except Cait Sith. He is terrible no matter how you slice it)

It's one of the most important games ever made. People often mistake that for greatness.
The confusion between greatness and importance is a common one, especially on the internet.

If you read through this thread, as I just have, you will notice that the general consensus on Final Fantasy 7 is very varied and that is exactly as expected. you see, when anyone considers something to be great, that is an opinion of theirs and opinions cannot easily be changed, although internet forum members don't let that stop them from trying, which is how we invented the flame war.

However, everyone in this thread will agree, unless they are actually insane, that Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most important games of all time. The importance of a game does not require it to be a good game, it simply requires it to significantly affect the industry and culture of gaming significantly, and if you don't think that FF7 did that, then you should probably remind yourself that this Monday the game will turn 14 years old and we're still talking about it.

FF7 did have a profound effect on the gaming landscape, especially in the west where it was more or less singly handily responsible for the explosion in the amount of JRPG and other niche Japanese titles that have come overseas since it's release. Without FF7, we may never have seen Katamari Damacy appear on this side of the world.

So remember kids, regardless on how you feel about the game, it really was one of the most important games in gaming history.

And if you really hate it so much that you can't bring yourself to admit that, maybe you can console yourself by realising that another one of gamings most important games was E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on the Atari 2600. No-one said important games had to be good.

Although Final Fantasy VII is a great game, Final Fantasy IX is the one I prefer. I can understand why it's one of the best but I wouldn't say it's the single best game in the history of gaming.

It's actually more common to hate on the game nowadays. Just look at this thread, the bad-to-good ratio of comments about the game is absurd.

You can toggle the ATB battle system.

That and the game is pathetically easy anyway.

Certainly not everybody thinks that way about FF7, for instance; I don't, I didn't like any of the FF games.

It is a good game and it was the one that really got me into gaming and one of the few games that I have replayed many times. Whether or not you like or dislike it you have to admit that it was a milestone when it was released. Unfortunately for the franchise it has not changed enough to meet up with present times and FF 13 was the final nail in the coffin for my interest in this series.

especially on the escapist, no one will ever agree to that, if anything you have people sharpening their pitchforks and tossing that game into the bonfire and burning it to hell. (then again, majority of the escapist is quite vocal about there not being a heaven or hell, thus just burning it to microscopic crisps)

anyways, i enjoyed it enough, for its time it was pretty good, now a days, not so much at all.

the only thing i truly like from it is the chocobo stuff, materia system, and the game DOESN'T LEVEL UP WITH YOU (eyes twitching at ff8 for going the complete opposite direction with both of those) while everything was just a meh for the most part

however i do like the music for it, thats pretty solid imo.
