So... why do we all agree Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever?

Well, I thought it was great. But that's my opinion. A lot of people share the opinion that it's a great game. I don't get all hot and bothered when people say they don't like it. There are a lot of movies/games that are "monumental landmarks" in their respective mediums that I don't think were all that great. It's OK to not agree with popular opinion. Do I agree with the fact that it should be a pinnacle of the gaming world? No. Do I agree that it was a good game? Yes. It's not the greatest game I've ever played. In fact, it is far from it, but it isn't a "bad" game by any means in my eyes.

If you don't like Final Fantasy 7, that's fine.

FFVII was a good game and while it may not be the greatest game of all time the impact it had on the industry can't be ignored. When you get down to it obviously not everyone is going to like in fact some people might start to hate it when it reaches such immense popularity (Such as Halo or COD). Case in point the game was generally well received by fans and critics there isn't really any denying that but like all games its a matter of opinion if one considers it "The Greatest Ever".

On a personal note FFVII is one of my favorite games (as you couldn't tell by the Avatar) but I wouldn't go as far as to say "it are teh best evar" there are plenty of other games out there, its just a matter of opinion. For me it was about Cloud I played the game when I was 8 and I personally connected to his story of being an underdog and how he later overcame his problems. I feel that this character in particular helped shape me into who I am today.

By today's standards, it's a pretty terrible game. The overwhelming majority of people who go play it today are either confused, disappointed, or "really impressed". For the most part, there's a strong undercurrent of jumping onto bandwagons for those who play it now and like it. Virtually every facet of the game has been done better, more subtly, and with more polish now. If you really think it's a great game by today's standards, you must not be playing many good games that came out since.

On the other hand, it's a very important game. It's like Citizen Kane or Seinfeld. Neither is very impressive by today's standards because it just feels like a worse version of something you've seen a hundred times. The difference is that you've only seen it a hundred times because they did it first. So, yes, extremely important. A good game by any reasonably modern standards? Not really, no.

This is false.

I've only ever heard criticism.

Baldur's Gate 2 is one of the best ever.
That's....because it IS one of the best games ever made.
Baldur's Gate 2 isn't even the best game on the Infinity Engine. As I said about FF7 it was big and did everything with a basic level of competentcy, beyond that the only thing it really has going for it is the mage duels and the character creation system.

Everyone who jumps on the bandwagon of "Final Fantasy VII is the best one evar" also tend to follow with the corollary "Final Fantasy VIII is the worst one evar".

That's truly disappointing, 'cause I really liked eight. I played seven after I finished VIII, X, X-2 (sadly yes, I foolishly bought this), and XII, and I found all of them to be more enjoyable than VII. I did like the materia system, but I found seven to be showing its age, and not as fun.

In my book, Final Fantasy VII receives a "meh" rating. I found VI, VIII, X, XII, and XIII all to be better than VII, which is second-to-last in FFs I have played, right before the ridiculously easy FFI.

FFX is the best in the series.
Only bad things about it is blitzball and Tidus.
Also, the laughing scene.

Well, look at the FF games made after 9.....and then you'll see why everyone likes 7 so much. To me, i think it's a great game despite it's age, but it's definitely not the 'best game ever!'.

Final Fantasy 7 was incredible for it's time, but it hasn't aged well and by today's standards it's mediocre at best.

It was a neat game with fun mechanics, overrated yes and sadly started the trend of watered down layouts and designs in 3D RPGs....

We don't. I've never played it, or any Final Fantasy game. Why? Because the characters look retarded. Yes, really.
Meh muscle bound freaks in FPSs and action titles look more retarded...

meh it was good for its time, then ff9 came along and shat all over it.

ocarina of time was a much more 'important' game in revolutionizing the games industry into what it is today.

also after pokemon happened that was the end for rpgs.

I've never played it, but it is FF, so it has to be bad.

I mean, whose idea was it to wait so long in between attacks? Is every character a chain smoker who needs to catch their breath? Would explain why they're so skinny...

Because we played it as a kid and liked it back then and therefore it's important to us. Isn't that obvious?

It's really easy for me to admit that I love this game because of how nostalgic it is for me, and probably not much else. Hell, my entire top twenty five games list of all time is basically nothing but games I loved as a kid, and that's a perfectly valid reason for considering a game your favourite; if you aren't basing your tastes on how much you personally enjoyed this game, then what the hell are you basing it on?

Point stands though; Final Fantasy VII was easily the best game I ever played when I was seven.

FF7 is definitely near the bottom of the list of Final Fantasy games. I'll give it some credit that it really got the JRPG genre going in the West and helped make 3-D graphics popular, but pretty much any Final Fantasy game is better than 7. Only ones that are really lower than 7 are 1, 3, and 5. FF6 is the best, followed closely by FF10 and then a tie between FF9, FF8, and FF4.

Side note: FF8 is so much better when you learn that drawing is pointless and you can get all your spells from items instead.
I love how diverse FF fans are. am serious its great. Like 8 is great and you seem to be a fan but the funny wait nvm. I started wrting this before i finished reading your post thought your fav game was 8... turns out its 6 WHAT A SUPRISE somone on the escapist saying 7s bad and 6 is the best in the series. You also bash 1,3,5. i take back all the good things i was gonna type and praise about you.

Also FF10 is the exact same thing as 7 is. When 7 came out it made the PS1 awsome great graphics instresting story. fast forward to FF10 the exact same effect. I also assume you think 12,13 are bad to? your not a fan. Just another guy loving 6 because of dark and needlesly gritty it is.
First off, I never said any of them were bad. I've played each of them, and they're all good in one way or another. But in my personal opinion 1, 3, 5, and 7 are lower than the others.
Second, I really like the games for their story and their characters. Thats why 10 is high up there, cause I feel it has a really good story and the characters are well designed(especially Auron). 7 just kind of falls flat with me in both story and characters. Some I like (Red XIII), others I don't (Cloud). Bartz from 5 is another example of this.
Third, I enjoyed 12 and 13 a lot. 13 is right below 4 on my list. 12 I like the story for a ton, although the gameplay bugs me some so its not quite as high on my list.
