So... why do we all agree Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever?

Ya know, I actually have yet to have finished FF VII, I started it, and after two hours got bored and haven't picked it up since. I actually think that FF IV and (I know a lot of people are going to hate me for this) FF XIII are the better Final Fantasy's. I'm sure if I actually finished FF VII I would see why a lot of people loved it, but right now it just seems like everyone's nostalgia glasses are glued on.

Who is all ? FF VII isn't even one of the greatest jrpgs, hell it's arguably not even the best in the series so why would it be one of the greatest games ..it is ok and for its time fairly great but that's about it.

haha, I've seen most of EgoRaptor's stuff, including this, and I think he's hilarious.
The old guy at the end reminded me soooooo much of my father.
He was unemployed off and on for a while and was, and still is, a very avid gamer.
(He is now very happily employed :)
With allll of that free time he explored the most vast depths of the game, spending hours upon hours playing and researching items and skills and locations, and states constantly that its one of the best games he has ever played (just behind his all time favorite, Final Fantasy Tactics, go figure.)
OT: I guess perhaps because it was so ahead of its time, just considering the story, gameplay, plot, and vast expansion of the game (spanning 4 discs I believe.)

Because at the time there was no rpg like it. Most RPGs back then were cliche medieval styled or 2D based, and usually had these noble people as your heroes. FFVII managed to pull off different and it worked well enough that a lot of people liked it

It was awesome at the time. Now it's being horribly overrated by teenage girls. Makes me sad. 6 was better, in my opinion.

It was one of the better FF games in my mind. And I do find myself replaying it again and again where other more modern ones are not getting played (FF XIII I'm looking at you). Personally I just really loved the atmosphere of the game and even really liked the characters (which is usually a low point for JRPG's as most modern anime type things make me role my eyes). If I had a low point it is that there is a little too much grinding, but then, that's RPG's for you...

This is same reason that a lot of people love Earthbound. Not fantasy nor sci-fi.

I do recall being completely entranced by FFVII when it was new. It was just so impressive from a story-telling perspective for a videogame. Also, my teenage years probably influenced my beliefs in it being a good story with likable characters. Oh, I was so naive.

I still think the story is good, it's cliche with a few new twists, and has a bit of bad translation in it "Off course!" .

But that's the key thing many people miss, just like Half Life and it's sequel they're amazing today for what they did and WHEN they did it. People miss the WHEN very often which is important because once that game has come out others have copied it or even improved upon it.

If I had to pick something, I think it was the loose threads of the story that gave it its appeal. The way I see RPGs before, a thread didn't exist until someone straight out told you about it. You got reveals, but no mystery, and the villains were always painted very obviously in their ambitions.

FFVII had a lot of mystery to parts of the story.
1: You had a hero, claiming to be a big bad SOLIDER, slowly falling into madness (from strong to weak). With some out-of-place connection with the main villain (who didn't even give a shit about the hero). Tie in the old friend that was holding back a secret that could contradict the Hero's story.

2: Then you have the cloaked guys roaming around everywhere, that eventually get labelled as something related to the Hero when the villain actually starts mocking him.

3: There's the motivation for why the villain destroyed the Hero's hometown years ago.

4: And the innocent flower girl that the big evil corporation wanted for some reason.

The beautifully drawn steampunk city and new 3D graphics made an impact, as well, but for me it was that drive to see how these threads all fit together.

We don't all agree.

Because I think Final Fantasy 7 with absolutely shit, as with about 95% of JRPGs.

Well I'm an FF fan and a fan of FFVII in particular, so my input won't surprise anyone.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but aside from being the first 3d FF, FFVII was the first Final Fantasy game to be released in the PAL regions which probably had a massive impact on its popularity and the reason so many still talk about it now - FF7 was one of the first JRPGs to have a real global following.

The points for its reputation are as follows:
1. It was an excellent graphical leap forward
2. It was a cyberpunk/fantasy style game which was pretty new at the time.
3. It has a good storyline
4. It dared to do something noone else would do at the time; kill off a main, well liked
character
5. It had sephiroth. No matter how much you hate jrpgs, ff games and ff7 you have to admit he is one of the most iconic AND badass villians ever.

It hasn't aged amazingly but it is still fun to play and quite different, its just people can't handle the lack of sub-objectives and amazing graphics and thats where the hate comes from.
