the reason they won is because of pure fanboyism. they beat out FAR more deserving companies (Nintendo, Valve, etc) because people want the little guy to win, reguardless of quality.
take any game from Valve and compare it to Minecraft, the Valve game is better

it's more or less sending the message that, "if you create an unfinished game, you will earn a legion of hostile fanboys to praise you with one side of their mouths and massage your balls with the other. it's not about quality, it's all about your company's image. the more indie, the better your "game" will be recieved."

I keep getting responses from I guess you could say "hardcore" Minecraft fans. My god, I think they uplifted them from the Final Fantasy fan base. Please don't let the Minecraft fans take note from the Final Fantasy following, I can't handle another group like that DX
**sigh**

I love how you presented a rational, reasoned response, only to piss on another fandom for no reason at the end of it.

My bracket has Square Enix the winner. I am part of the Final Fantasy fandom.

Why exactly did you feel the need to insult a whole group of people by comparing them to the absolute insanity going on in that other thread? Really. It's just... very impolite of you.

As far as I can tell, the only reason the Final Fantasy community gets annoying is because people always feel the need to insult what we like. I don't go around saying mean things about Valve games, even if the only one I ever actually enjoyed was Portal. TF2 and L4D are good games, just not my cup of tea.

Seriously, though, why the random hate?

Probably cause thier pick lost, or their brackets are fucked up. Its like in the real March Madness, where you cant support the underdog number 8 seed cause they beat your number one seed and destroyed your bracket and all chance of winning the office bet, or whatever you fill your bracket out for.

I dont know. I dont mind Minecraft winning. I picked them to lose in the final Four, but I figured they would go all the way.

Besides, I looked at my rating and I'm too low to win anything, and that was really hte only reason I filled one out (besides it was my first time doing so and watned to for the lols).

EDIT:

Its more then that. What did Nintendo honestly do so far that was "good" for the company. They released two shotty games (Other M and Galaxy 2), and havent made much of an advancement on the wii. you cant say pokemon, cause Game Freak was on the bracket.

Valve... well, I dont have much against Valve, though they need to get on the ball with this HL2E3, otherwise its going to turn into Nukem Forever.

Minecraft as it stands is arguably the best game out there, because its a true sandbox, a great social interaction, and reflects the spirit of legos and the work you put into it. You build a an 8x8x8 building and obvious you dont care for it. However, you build a four story diamond mansion with a gold cock in the front year next to an iron skull with lava pouring out, AND blocked out the sun, you're obviously playing this game. it gives a sense of reward, and not just with those crappy achievements.

... And you can make the argument that any company wins on "fanboyism" especially nintendo and Valve.

Its a smaller company that made something (not even finished) thats become popular.
For all i am concerned "GO MAJANG!"

And please, to flaming or trolling.
Thanks.
The spam accounts is the ONLY problem that I have with this. If you go through the Valve vs Mojang you can find A LOT of them.

(or how all the angery fans have told me "free updates").
Which is funny, considering the metric shit-ton of free updates Valve gives for all its games.

OT: Meh, March Mayhem never mattered to me. Over the past few years, it has been all about who can get the most fans to vote. Turbine won the first 2 years, then Valve, and now Mojang. All because they asked their fans to vote.

No, this is not a bad thing, and I'm not saying it is. Just something I noticed. If it wasn't this, it would be whoever's the most popular at the time. Which Mojang most definitely is.

Also, when you beat Nintendo in the first round, I don't think your the underdog anymore.

EDIT: Forgot to say what I was most angry about. I'm most angry about the massive amount of traffic that comes here and brings the site to a god damn crawl.

What's with all the worship for Mojang? They released a single game in 2009, and somehow they're considered better then every other dev for a game which is neither original nor universally appealing?

Zynga was a finalist. Atleast, I think they were. Either finalist or semi-finalist. I'm pretty sure finalist though.

10,000 new members for one day to vote for Zynga. It was the greatest call to arms of The Escapist, as it was up against valve, and Zynga beating it would be an end to our dignity. It's a wonder I've escaped alive.

As I have said before, its akin to one of those insanely stupid Hollywood movies, where the supremely underwhelmed, underfunded and underskilled noob team manage to beat out the uber-prepared team simply because they have 'spunk' and a legion of diehard fans.

Also, i consider the fact that you can call on a legion of diehard fans as a negative, because if your product was worth a damn, you wouldn't need a legion of diehard fans to back your shit up.

n.b, I heard that beta buying peons aren;t getting full access to MC: release version, so essentially Motang are just as ruthless as every other dev, so my balls, bitches.

nb.nb: Recaptcha: "armed subjects". lol.

I'm sorry if I insulted you, I should have been more clear about what I meant. I've got friends who are in large denial over FF14 and won't budge an inch on the matter that FF13 was at least a little boring at times. I guess my past experiences with parts of the fanbase have influenced my opinion of a whole group of people too much.

Damn it, I just realized that I was classifying many by the actions of few. I'm trying to catch myself before I do something like that but I guess it must of slipped. Now I look like an ass... great.

I think doing something unique or at least underrepresented will generally get a lot more loyalty from it's fans than something that is universally appealing. Especially when "universally appealing" so frequently means "paint by numbers" and "watered down", as shown in franchises like Halo, Modern Warfare and Mass Effect. That said I will admit to enjoying the first Mass Effect for its story, even if I loathed the controls and the inventory interface especially and wished that BioWare had done better with the 'game' aspect, but I guess that's the price you pay for broader appeal.

I think the biggest problem with Mojang is that the studio has yet to even release one full game. Has a film student ever been nominated for an Oscar because of the movie they were working on?

Most people don't like to lose. Ever.

Some take it better than others, but generally speaking they want to win. On top of that, many didn't think that Mojang would make it as far as they did (especially since they only have one -albeit popular- game to their name), let alone come out on top so they're resentful for it beating out whatever company they may favor.

It's human nature, and not a big deal. It'll die out eventually.

I just don't care for March Madness as a whole because it's a popularity contest, rather than being based off of any company vs. company statistics.

The competition is damn near meaningless, so there's not much reason to be upset over it.

Honestly, I'm pleased with the results for it could've been far worse.
Finally someone with the sense to realise that valve losing isn't going to make them cancel episode 3 and that the entire world isn't going to end because mojang are winning.

That was a very gracious apology. I accept. **respectful nod**

Actually, I didn't like either FF 11 or FF 14. **shrug** Square should not make MMOs. Just... no.

I enjoyed FF 13 a lot, but then, one thing I've never much liked in RPGs is getting lost. It was impossible to get lost in FF 13. ^^;; Also, I really liked the story and characters - they started out kind of annoying, but they grew into actual likable characters, and seeing them grow was my favorite part of the game. It could get a bit repetitive, but when you're in that zone, trying to beat the numbers and get that stupid Adamantos-thing to die and drop the item you've been trying to get for the past several hours - you don't even notice that time has passed.

I had Square as my top slot because of how varied they've become. Just Cause 2 is probably the most fun I've had screwing around for hours in a video game, ever, and Nier took the the normal FF/JRPG formula and turned it on it's ear. Plus, like I said, I enjoyed FF 13. And FFs 5-10. And 12 kinda (although I thought that one was far duller than FF 13). Plus there were other gems like Xenogears, Parasite Eve, and Vagrant Story. Square has too much history for me not to keep on loving it, even when they do screw up a game or two.

Anyway...

I think its because people are taking this WAY too seriously. Some of them seem not being able to bear that their favorite company lost. Its actually a little frightening how people look like they are getting so worked up over something so meaningless.

This is all I read when I see someone complain about a topic like this

"Bew hew my favorite company lost! No one deserves #1 except what I love because what I like is better than what everyone else likes"

If someone likes a game more then dandy that's their opinion, if you hate that game then let them enjoy it all they want while you play what you like.

I just said this in another topic but I got yelled at because I said "I like Darksiders better than Zelda" and ya know what? I'm right because it's what I like, if you think Zelda is better? You're right too! It's your OPINION! Why do so many people care on what people like or dislike? Especially on the internet where it effects absolutely nothing with you.

Well, to be fair, they can't be EVERYONE'S favorite if they're not winning the voting majority.

Because its Zynga 2.0, albeit a bit better. I'm sorry but a developer with a single game that isn't even finished shouldn't be beating developers with several AAA games under their belt, namely Valve, Obsidian, Nintendo, and (potentially) Bioware.

The problem is few people seem to look at the overall works of said companies, rather they look at the current works. For example, Dragon Age 2 is pissing people off so "ZOMGBIOWARESUXXORZ."

The big problem is that this is the "developer showdown" not the "who made your current favorite game showdown". As a developer Mojang sucks. Game development is slow, some things (like carried torch light) have been said to be "impossible" by Notch and then a modder added it in to prove it was possible. Mojang's performance hasn't warranted them to win some showdown like this. They are not a great developer. It is rediculous they are beating out companies like Valve, Nintendo, and last I checked Bioware. These are juggernauts that earned their place as Titans in a showdown like this through many years of building solid reputation with gamers with quality titles. Mojang has made half a game and has been popular for about a year. And with their practices they haven't earned anything but "neato" points.

I like Minecraft but Mojang isn't a great developer and I wish people would recognize this. I think they deserve some credit but this is beyond overboard.

That pretty much sums up my feelings as well. I have nothing against Mojang, it just irritates me that a company that doesn't even have a complete game to their name is crushing so many companies that have been around longer and have done so much more. Not saying that a new and upcoming company shouldn't be able to topple some of the big guns, but topple them with only a game that isn't even finished? C'mon people!
