That happens because, unlike Europeans, we in North America have not spent two thousand years staring at their great-great-great-greatx1000 grandparents graves. We all came from a place other than North America, we are not native, and the odds are extremely high most of our family's been here less than four generations.
This, pretty much. In my case, I'm not more than 1/8th any particular nationality. I identify with particular bits of my parents' culture that was communicated to them by their parents, who filtered their own cultures, etc. etc, going back through 3 generations of multi-ethnic parents. I do own that part of my family's plural heritage that gets communicated down to me, and that's an important part of who I am, even if not the most important part. Culturally? I'm pretty damn American. But a fair number of Puerto Rican, Polish, German and even Indian bits sneak in there every once in a while, and it'd be foolish not to recognize why they're there.

Funny story though: I'm more white than I am any other race, but whenever I tell someone that...

They're an ethnoreligious group, it gets kind of complicated. There's a sort of debate over the question "Who is a Jew?", actually.

What a coincidence.

I'm 1/8 Jewish.
So do you only celebrate one day of Hanukkah?
Actually, I'm a Christian, but geneticly speaking I'm 1/8 Hebrew.

But then who isn't these days?

It only annoys me when they claim they are from somewhere because of it like bumping into a rather large clearly southern American with an accent thick enough to scrape paint claiming to be Scottish.

I guess it's like if you look back in my past I'm of English and Welsh descent, yet I feel no connection to either of them. So I don't really mind to be honest, it's just a history, it doesn't really mean anything to me. If I were to be part of a culture, I would say that I'm Australian, and proud of it.

Well, My grandfather is Irish. Not sure how it works out to be ...

But I'm Irish, I guess that explains the reason why I like beer?

Pure English as far back as the family tree goes.

Not that I give a shit or that genetics sees a difference between someone from Norway as opposed to someone from Sweden.

I guess though if you're from former colonial countries there is probably some psychological need to know your roots as it were.
