I would recommend Prince of Persia (2008)

No real deaths, so no disappointment's, rather straight forward controls and something resembling a story and as a bonus it's quite colorful as I remember.

But my mom doesn't like it, instead she dismissed the game, only recently with L.A. Noire she really got into gaming. Since the combat and all the actiony bits are skippable. On a plus side you can play it with her, without taking the controller out of her hands to be helpful.

She moved on to Red Dead Redemption now.

I don't think there's anything I have that could be deemed suitable for my mother. It's either sports games, and that's not her cup of tea at all, or something violent which is even less up her alley. Gears, GTA, Saints Row, Assassins Creed... she's not going to enjoy any of that. L.A. Noire would be closer, but I think the graphic images of dead bodies would be a turn off for her. There was an old text adventure I had on the Amiga twenty years ago she quite liked, so if I had any sort of game along those lines (maybe if I bought one of the Monkey Island re-releases, which I may still do at some point) then that'd be closer to the mark.

The only game my mother has ever got into was Hotel Dusk, and badly at that. She stole my DS until she had beaten it.

My mom? I'd try to get her to play a Bioware game.

But in general? I'd go with The Endless Forest, honestly. It is so extremely different from standard game fare that it would give an adult non-gamer a chance to break out of the outdated "Points 'n levels" perception of games.
It would also teach them to respond to intuitive interfaces and encourage exploration.

And its also part screensaver, so stealthily installing it on their computer would make them inadvertently play with it. >.>

She likes puzzle games so I'd probably give her one of those, but she plays enough games already.

I was lucky and my mother got into gaming along side me when I was younger. Started off with stuff like Croc and Crash Bandicoot. Moved on to stuff like Tekken and now she plays stuff like Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2.

I'd like to say Portal, though I'm not sure if she'd be comfortable with a first person game. She does occasionally play puzzle games though, so it may be a good choice. I'm not sure how good her reflexes would be for some of the more complicated bits though. Maybe a turn-based game that she can take at her own pace, like Civilization V?

Aside from that, I don't really think there's much in my games library that she'd take an interest in. That said, she already does play some games on the Wii with my little brothers (mostly the LEGO ones).

My mum use to play Spyro for the PS1 but hasn't for years. I still have them so I'd start there. Or continue there if your a grammer nazi.

Grand Theft Auto laddie. That'll teach that hypocritical ***** for wanting to play man games. :D

One second thought, maybe you should try something a little less violent like, like...

...Gears Of War?

I... don't know. Most of my Library is... quite violent. So... I guess I'd show her Minecraft? She used to be the artsy type, so hopefully that would grab her.

My mum loved the second wario game, the back when they were still platformers and after they decided he shouldn't be able to die. As for a new game, I'd probably get her to try portal; she's into puzzly stuff.

I get her old style games, like Sonic adventure 3, or just let her keep playing that flag collecting game with the cars.

Me? I gave my mama Splatterhouse. She come's home from the asylum next week :D
All joking aside, I'd probably start her off with Assassin's Creed or something, I dunno. Maybe work up to Gears of War
