Sociopathy has always been 'cool', just not as popular as now. Sure, TV is likely to blame, but I'm pretty sure that most of the people who are bragging about being sociopaths are just lying for attention. you would have to had some pretty terrible parent to actually become a sociopath.

It's some cry for attention I imagine, They must of thought they were the only one who's lost faith in humanity or special. They'll get over it.

See, I don't have a massive problem with the thirteen year olds who think that the best way of looking cool is to say that they hate things and go on about how they're going to kill stuff. They're easy to ignore.

What pisses me off are the people that pop up in EVERY thread that is even slightly related to any kind of criminal or stupid activity and say "This has just killed the last of my faith in humanity."

Has it? Has it REALLY? Is your belief so easily manipulated by the actions of a few? Are you so sure that humanity is shit and it's not just news stations going with the worst stories to get viewers? No, no all humanity must be shit because a small percentage of the population is. We should be wiped out, because clearly you're not just easily manipulated.
Most of the time (at least when I say it) people are being sarcastic theres too many humans to assume we're all bad and also there is not any other intelligent civilzed species out there so how can the way we live is the only way it is known that intelligent civilizations live. What is confusing when people mean that is that we're the only known intelligent civilzed species so what is their idea of a perfect humanity that they do have faith in and why should we all be wiped out? Humans have definatly improved looking at the past and how governments used to work, monarchies that weren't figureheads, slavery, caste systems all that stuff it still happens but its less common.

I remember someone it might of been you said the same thing to me in another thread when I wrote a comment about "faith in humanity" falling well I wasn't trying to sociopathic. I think humans want to hate someone we need someone to hate if you look at the news media they always try to publish stories about bad unlikable humans, terrorist attacks, and mindblowingly stupid people talking out against the government or something if one looked at the common news media alone one could assume that humans are a terrible race but there are plenty of good decent people they just don't make the news and I'm sure if we ever find another civilzation on anther planet they'll have had plenty of problems too, as long as they have emotions and independant thoughts they'll have disagreements, and no I'm not once again trying to sociopathic by discouraging those things.

Well, anything to be part of the counterculture.

I can tell you where the trend started on The Escapist, but I'm not going to.
First part: yeah, I think it's part of a larger trend, we've pretty much gone from a nation (and world to an extent) that wants to be part of the general culture to a nation that wants to be part of the counter-culture

Second part: I'd say Yahtzee-- he mentions often enough what an anti-social, misanthropic, emotionally jaded, cynical loner he is and a lot of people that like him like to emulate him-- and some fail to get that him saying that is partially true and partially tongue-in-cheek semi-self-deprecating running-gag-ish possibly ironic humor

It's like being emo, it's considered edgy by some.
I don't buy into it, though.
It's childish at best.

This is one of the most annoying things about the Escapist community, along with Yahtzee fanboyism, Wii bashing and people using every oppurtunity to show how antitheistic they are.

Anyway, I certainly hope the reason you see this that often is because people really think acting like a misantrope is hip right now. Otherwise there would be a lot of mentally unstable people around here.

Sociopaths fantasize about MONEY and SUCCESS. Psychopaths fantasize about BLOOD and CONTROL.

Seriously, people, saying sociopaths are the serial killers is plainly ignorant. Both types are different BY their core fantasy.

How should I know? I'm friends with a CERTIFIED sociopath and they are good people, too. My friend is one of the best friends I have ever had and ever probably will. When they make friends, they make them for life. He's just misguided and not emotionally numb in anyway(but hey, neither are psychopaths). If fact, he has deep, underlying emotions.

As for me, I display tendencies but I'm not sociopathic. The difference is mainly the grasp of social rules. Sociopaths are wildly innapropriate and do not see the wrong in their actions.

Yeah, flat affect is not the same as sticking your head in the clouds and ignoring the bad things in life, or being resolute in not feeling "negative" emotions.
Though no emotion is really negative - anger can keep you alive just as well as love can.
And fear is the most natural thing in the world - only the truly insane can escape it.
I never said love was positive. That's by far the most negative attachment you can make as far as im concerned. Also fear only exists when you care about your life. If i have to be insane to stop caring then i must have super lungs to be able to breathe...

It's just like being an "Atheist". Denouncing god exists then going to Sunday school.
...I can't make heads or tails of that, so I'm going to ignore it.
This is me ignoring it.
While talking about it.

I just don't like people who fake thing to try to stand out.

I'm not really an active member of The Escapists but yeah, I just like to lurk around and stuff. So, lately I've noticed people "brag" about being a sociopath (ie emotionally numb) or fantasies of killing people, anyone else notice this? I mean wth guys, when did it become cool to be a sociopath?

Obviously there's bound to be an actual sociopath around with this much members, but half the time I see someone claim such a thing I get the feeling it's bs.

I think I blame Dexter.
It's called the Internet.
Welcome.
