ok i apologise because i understand how this is going to sound but

I need someone to sell eve online to me.

By that, i dont mean i want to buy someones account or something, i mean i need someone to give me information about it.

long story short: played wow. had fun. got bored. quit. started Warhammer online: AoR, discovered that the population is miniscule. Heard about EVE online being huge. Got interested.

Again, i like the look but before i buy it, i need someone to convince me to get it. Whats good about the game? Whats compelling about it? how large is the game population? all that sort of stuff.

And once more i apologise because looking back at what ive already written, i sound like an asshole. And i dont even mean to sound like even more of an arse but, if this game is as amazing as its supposed to be, could someone help me get started? Forgive me, but i dont want to jump headfirst into a new game without knowing anyone or having someone to help me when im lost or confused.

Thanks for reading, and if you think that eve is crap, then please be descriptive as to whats bad about it.

Eve online is an MMO with over 5000 solar systems some of which belong to the various story line factions (Ammar, Caldari, Minmatar, and Galante) these solar systems have security ratings which range from 0.0 to 1.0.

0.4 or below is considered low security space where you can freely PVP. 0.5 is considered (High security space) where you can PVP and kill people but will instantly get owned by Concord (the ingame police) Any space designated as 0.0 is known as (NULL sec) and a player run alliance can lay sovereignty over such places. Similary you can go to war and take systems from players.

In eve online "Guilds" are known as Corporations. Multiple corporations can join together to form alliances. Alliances can claim sovereignty over certain areas of 0.0 (NULL sec).

In eve online you don't grind to level up like in MMO's such as WoW. Instead you buy skill books and enter them into your skill training que. Your character will then train that skill wether or not your logged in. So it does take time to build up your skills but you won't have to endlessly kill 20 billion of whatever creature.

My advice is if your getting started is to join a Pirate corp. Basicly pirate corps as the name suggests is a corp that ambushes people in systems 0.4 or lower (low sec).

Once your skills increase I'd recommend joining a Null Sec corp (a corp that owns sovereignty in 0.0 space) These are the corps where you will likely be involved in fleets consisting of atleast 150-200 pilots.

Whats good about the game: Free roaming. Go where you want, do what you want. Just be prepared to deal with the consequences. Just made a character and want to go into 0.0 space and attack a huge alliance? Sure you can, (and if you are skilled even annoy them for a while sniping miners and transports), but you will have your ship blown up and get podded. Probably more than once. Real time skill training means you level up as long as your account is active, instead of having to grind on killing rats or whatnot. Scheming, lying, betrayal, scaming, conning are all legitimate aspects of game play. I know some people consider that a downside, but it makes for a much more realistic experience. Also all expansions are free, always have been. You are free to have as many accounts as you want and even hardware multibox them. Software multiboxing is in the grey area. Blah blah blah.

Downsides: Steep learning curve. Like STEEP. Also to really hold onto some territory in null sec you need a lot of friends and a lot of free time.

LOLS i like the sound of that. Dunno about the whole active training thing though, but what ive heard is good so far. This is something which i may well get into, ill give it a shot anyway.

ill play the trial and give it a go, if i like it then ill buy it. If not then ill probably end up buying it anyway because im an idiot in that respect who would rather waste some money and get a full experience.

If you end up sticking with the game feel free to add me to your friends list. Name is the same there, "Damiv". I'm mostly retired from the game but I log on every now and then to blow someone up.

Or mine. Asteroids, my little asteroids... It's so calming and peaceful. Like yoga for unflexible people.

Should have got a 21 day trial code off a player. Also, find a newb corporation now that you'll join once you've done the tutorials (e.g. RPS, EVE University, etc.)

EVE University is a really good and reputable corp to help you learn the game.

well thank you, i shall certainly take a good look into this. I heard from a friend that there have been PVP battles featuring 2k players or more. Is that true???

Rarely yes. PvP fleet battles can get big, but it takes mutual planning to get that many people into a cluster without crashing it. If 500 people try to warp in at the same time it tends to do horrible things to the server.

Ah, thing is, with EVE... you can't get a feeling for the entire game with the 14 day trial. It does take time and patience, but it is so so worth it.
Other than that, prettty much covered by earlier posts.

Recently a new record was set on the number of people in one system, and in one battle. There were around 3250 all shooting each other in one system, biggest battle in Eve's history.

I'm half way through my own trial, trust me, it doesn't noticably skimp on the game. Sure, most Corps tend not to hire you due to being trial and might not subscribe, and you can't learn some skills.. but that makes sense. You're unlikely to start learning battlecruiser during your trial anyway.
It does require background reading. And quite a lot of it. You need to know about CPU, Powergrid, especially when outfitting a new ship, and the game doesn't have a lot of structure in the form of 'Go do this quest line! Go that way, it'll have stuff your level!' It's a case of 'Find an agent your level. Somewhere in high-sec. Or you can mine. We don't really mind. Do what you like.'
Skills take a while. I mean.. a long time. You need frigate at level 4 to learn cruiser. Getting from 3 to 4 takes nearly two days, real time.
The subscription is pricey at £15 for 30 days.. I myself am unsure about getting it. If you're american, get the comissioned officer boxed edition. Great for newbies. If like me you're not, go on Steam, cheapest version for a new account.
Again, background reading, eveopedia, eve wiki, whatever, you'll need them to figure out what is or is not good.
Ultimately, personal taste.
Enjoy.

I wouldn't have gotten it anyway... EVE is MASSIVELY boring, unless you have the time to do huge amounts of grinding to support your PvP habit. If you got bored of the level of grind in WoW, don't even start looking at EVE!

I've never heard a better description than this (with apologies to Y) : "Eve is a second job you have to pay for."

Sums up my 3 month experience perfectly.

If you're lucky you can steal monthly passes from attacking other players. Those monthly passes are represented by in-game items which can be taken if your ship is blown up and then either used or sold for in-game currency so you can either loot them or buy them with in-game currency and play for free.

EVE can best be described as a two year University course that eventually gives you the qualification to play the job EVE. Just without any of that stuff we call a wage.

The thing about EVE is that the progrpaganda makes it seem like all kinds of shit is happening all the time in the game. The thing is that's crap. The big things in EVE are like the big things in real life they only happen to the folk at the top (the players who have been playing for ages.) So if you don't mind wasting two years of your life grinding away on the off chances that you may one day be a 'player' in the EVE universe then yeah go for it.

Afraid I have to point out a little error here.

PLEX cards, are destroyed when the ship blows up that carries them. The only way to get a Plex car is to buy them off the market, get one as a gift, or buy 2 with real money.

Be careful! The players are quite vicious and will kill you if they think it's worth it in any way.
