Well, there are two or three things that could have happened, the most obvious would be a spark from the open fire, hitting him and igniting his clothing, although unlikely it is totally possible. Also he could have just fallen asleep with a lit cigarette, it burned down and lit his clothes, and he wakes in flames, jumps out of the chair and falls to the floor, with the cigarette burning itself out.

The problem with these two possibilities is that they leave no evidence of what caused the burning, hence the confusion.

I'd be offended by that but I'm too busy having a drunken brawl with my step father.

Anywho, this is pretty cool. No offense or callousness meant but I'd sure like to die by spontaneous combustion.

I am currently picturing some sort of huge, mushroom-cloud explosion though.

´m not buying it. People don´t just catch fire for nothing.

Who knows, maybe Prometeus was bored.

Made me think of South Park too and it was blamed on holding in gas, kinda sick to make fun off but was funny to see the surname Faherty.

Being that its not really bursting into flames without a cause, but rather burned beyond physical evidence of what started the blaze, I don't know how people can label it as spontaneous combustion but rather combustion through unknown means.

Spontaneous combustion has a long history of being accompanied by poor investigative effort, optimal scenarios and lonely, fragile people.

Somebody died of spontaneous combustion in Ireland..
Hardly shocking, alcohol is extremely flammable (budum tish)

Disclaimer - I am in no way, shape or form saying that all Irish people drink all the time ..... sometimes they sleep.

Kind of makes me want to watch that South Park episode.
My first thoughts exactly. This guy died at home though. If he'd gone up in flames whiloe walking with his hot young girlfriend then maybe there might be something to the "hold in your farts" theory...

Color my surprised that a country stereotypically known for being drunk has the first spontaneous combustion. So much Alcohol in their bloodstreams, eating a Fireball candy will ignite.
The first? What are you talking about?
There have been plenty known cases of people who have apparently spontaneously combusted and died.
There were never anyone around to see it though, so there's little to no proof.
