Cave Story, recently. I beat this really hard boss, and then...

[Spoiler: Yeah...] Curly nearly killed herself to save my life. [/Spoiler]

It hurt. At least I got the items necessary to save her.

I would say it's still shocking to someone who does not know yet. To someone who does, it's not a big deal.
Meh, I still don't see the big deal. I wasn't overly shocked when I first found out. Besides I think there are much more bizarre cases than Bridget.
I believe it depends if you were a huge fan of her or not prior to finding out. Half the people who were probably died a little inside finding out. Most of my friends who used her in the game immediately stopped thereafter. xD
Ah, well that explains it. I've never played Guilty Gear. I only found out about Bridget because it's become another Internet meme. I still say there are more bizarre examples of this kinda thing then Bridget.

Metal Gear Solid 4, pretty much the entire game.
With the exception of getting to pilot Rex, and Johnny taking his mask off.

Mass Effect. I'd be astounded by the pretty visuals (Minus the uncanny valley faces) and the excellent writing in the story, and then the actual gameplay would happen and I'd die a million times because of framerate hiccups, unseen enemies hitting at you from nowhere, clusterfuck presentation of battles, and sticky cover systems.

indeed.

not to mention people are likely to grab the booster v.08 without knowing the consequences...

im fairly certain this moment brought several players moral WAY down.

especially since they give JUST enough time for you to start liking her. BOOM.

Zelda: The Wind Waker

finally got off the island, time for some adventure :D

10 minutes later:

Stripped away of everything and sent to a stupid stealth mission to which failure makes you have to do it all over again D:
Oh man, I never even bothered to pass that part. I saw where that game was taking me and I didn't like it.

I'd have to go with MGS4 to,
but for me it was the "nanomachines are behind everything" plot twist: "All that cool mystical stuff from MGS1 with Vulcan Raven and Psycho Mantis wasn't anything mysterious and awesome, it was ALL nanomachines."

Fuck you Kojima, for pulling that George Lucas shit on us!
I kinda liked the explaination, but would you have guessed any different?

I mean, the nanomachines are usually behind a lot of stuff, so of course the machines would have at least something to do with Vamp and Mantis' crazy powers.

When I realized that the entire second half of Brutal Legend was some kind of crappy RTS, I was hoping for a hack n slash metal game :(
You know, I could deal with it being a RTS to a degree. I mean I don't like them per se, but since it wasn't a full fledge micro manage everything RTS I got through it. The part of Brutal Legend that made me want to burn copies of Psychonauts and Grim Fandango was the whole "Yeah, we want you to do this mission, but we can't be bothered to tell you what the mission is. But do it for Metal!" If only the entire game had been the first 30 minutes or so repeated for 8-15 hrs. it would've gone down as the greatest game of all time.

Also, off topic, I would like to apologize for the large number of rude newer users and hope that they don't affect your view on all new users like myself.

The meeting with Ashley Williams on Horizon.

I mean I was excited to see one of my favourite characters return to the fray because frankly Miranda was no substitute, she sees Shepard, runs to him and embraces him passionatley and it's like a perfectly framed picture rejoyce.

Then she inevitably (and rightfully) asks about the last two years and the Commander working with Cerberus and suddenly the warm beautiful emotional mood is ruined by the inevitable falling out. Next thing I know, my favourite female character in Mass Effect refuses to join my team and I'm left with Miranda.

Still... at least I got an apologetic email and subsequent scene where Shepard gazes deeply at her photo on his desk. Gives me some kind of hope she'll be back for the third.

I didn't mind that they applied it to Vamp - probably because I didn't really like him anyway - but what I loved about MGS1 was the air of mystery. A couple of characters just had these abilities; no scientific explanation, no strings, they just had it. Same as in MGS3 with The End and The Sorrow. Okay, The Pain and The Fear were kinda silly, but it still nicely balanced itself between the natural and the super-natural.

And with the nanomachines twist it felt as though none of these characters really earned their power, it was just given to them. Maybe I'm romanticizing the shit out of it, but I can't help but feel that Kojima ripped the subtle mysticism out of the franchise with MGS4.

I know. I didn't think much until it actually happened, too. I almost missed that cabin, and nearly had her accidentally killed, but I made it, and now I can get the best ending, if I can get through that damn Last Cave (Hidden).
